Risen

From the folks that brought you the Gothic games comes Risen. It's a decent little rpg (on the PC at least -- I hear the 360 reviews are terrible). At any rate, you might want to keep a look out in the bargain bins online over the nexts few weeks, 'cause it's a pretty cool under-the-radar game.

I tried the PC demo and it felt very dry. The demo starts right when you are about to go to the swamp village or join the inquisition. Didn't make me want to drop 40 bucks on it. Wish I could've seen more of the game in the demo.

I thought the demo was terrible. The graphics didn't look good at all, and did we really need another game that begins after we've been shipwrecked on an island?

I think the game looks pretty good myself, maxed out and including ambient occlusion, but yeah, the beginning section isn't exactly engaging. Still, I've been having fun with it, and like I said, it's bound to hit bargain status as a download pretty soon. I got it for five bucks off, but I budget a lot for gaming.

The intrigue between the various factions is the most entertaining to me, so far. Pretty hard to play a goody-two-shoes in this. You're gonna kill and steal and do some underhanded shit no matter who you side with.

I'm a huge fan of Gothic 1 and 2. Anyone that enjoyed Oblivion but wanted something a bit more challenging should really give them a try, if you don't mind getting your ass handed to you a lot. So I'll probably this one to tide me over until Dragon Age is out.

The only experience I have with this developer is an impulse buy of Gothic 3, and after about forty five minutes of it, I think I can safely say no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no

Gothic 1 and 2 were fine, but everybody pretty much rates 3 as a train wreck. I skipped that one myself.

It's a shame that Dragon's Age will come out this year, as without that game (if it turns out like I hope it will) Risen would have been RPG (and probably game) of the year for me.

The further I get into this the more I love it. It's almost like a dialogue-heavy adventure game with extra rpg elements. Every line of dialogue is spoken, even by your avatar. You can play factions off one another, do quests for all sides (up until you have to commit), and Christ knows the game never holds your hand. I take back my previous tentative recommendation -- this is a good pc game, period.

As always, though, your mileage may vary.

Now I am thinking about getting this ! How does the combat system work ? Is it old school, JPG like, or FPS ? Dragon Age has made me realize I miss the fun of a good RPG. The action FPS feel of so many recent ones has made me just pass on them.

My dance card is full with Demons Souls > Dragon age > Alpha Protocol > Mass Effect 2 for the forseeable future, but knowing me I'll probably grab this when Steam has their inevitable sale.

I like what I've seen of the game so far. Man it's a good time to be an RPG player when I can look at something like this and, however regretfully, back-burner it.

That's it, I'm getting this. I played the demo and I can tell already that it will be much better than Gothic 3. So it's going to be pretty much all RPG all the time for me, at least for the foreseeable future. Thank god PC gaming is dead, otherwise I'd have to quit my job so I could play everything I want.

I am officially addicted to this game. Shame I bought Demon's Souls the same day, as I've been glued to this since day one.

Save me, Dragon Age!

Im having an extremely difficult time in keeping the bow as a primary weapon. Id read so many people complain about the melee so I figured Id forgo that for some ranged goodness but my bow skills are so weak it basically just gets me two free hits before its sword time. Only two points in sword and five in bow, should I just start training sword more and move on or stick to bows and the money sink that is the arrow?

Aside from that though Im really liking the game. The factions are set up so that from what I can tell, none of them are really the good guys, everyone is in it with their own shady agenda and that feels more authentic than it just being the blatantly good versus the obviously bad.

Crossbow beats bow, even though loading times suck. The bolt flies straight, no arc, and will hit the target virtually every time. I can kill grunts with one shot with the Hunter's crossbow and a couple of points in the talent. Coupled with my high-level sword skill I'm much more dangerous to groups lately. I'm in the process of making lizardmen my bitches.

By the way, anyone interested in Gothic or Gothic 2 can pick them up for $9.99 apiece at Good Old Games.

I can't say that this is a great game but I really love playing a game where you really have to watch your step. Because once you're out of the safe areas you can die just like that. I've joined the Order and I really like the more adventure like quests so far.

Yeah, just like Demon's Souls, if you don't pay attention you can die in a heartbeat. I hate Undead Warriors.

Fuck fighting with a staff. They're useless. Crossbow/sword and shield all the way.

Now I love it. I decided that my inner fascist wasn't strong enough and gave up the Order. Going to the bandit camp made me fall in love with the game. Such a great juxtaposition to the Monastery. In the Order everyone was running around, sweeping floors, moving artifact crates, training and studying. In the Bandit camp everyone is either drinking, smoking weed, sleeping on the ground or hiding in the swamp to avoid working. The guards aren't guarding, the workers aren't working, the hunters aren't hunting, everyone is a lazy asshole. The first quests are you either breaking everyone's balls to get them to work or doing their job for them. No wonder the Order is kicking their ass.
