30 Rock - Season 4

Looking forward to another season's worth of quotes, one-liners and what not. In addition to what "big name celebrity guest stars" Fey & Co. get for year #4.

Variety has seen the first two episodes for anyone interested.
Shit. Thanks for reminding me to set this up on my DVR.

ETA: Oh. Its next week. Guess I had time.

Don't know if we could categorize him as one. No offense to him.

30 Rock's Dangerous Decline

I didn't think last season was as bad as some say, although it was certainly weaker than the previous two. But comparing it to Will & Grace? That's harsh.

And ludicrous.

Fuck this stupid 30 Rock backlash in the mouth.

I rest my case.

The backlash and "decline" have less to do with 30 Rock not being the funniest show on TV anymore than people expecting it to be week in, week out. That I can't distinguish between the seasons enough to tell which was the strongest (you could've told me "Il Generalissimo" was in the 2nd and I wouldn't have known) just shows how consistently it's always been, imo.

Yeah. That article loses all credibility by claiming that Will & Grace was ever funny.
I blame the google news culture. They will write about 30' just to get hits.
ETA. One dimensional characters my ass.

"Here's Jay Leno."

Absolutely brutal. And so true.

I love that this show is back!!!

Great line. The episode overall wasn't great, or even average for them.
Jesus Christ, that Tracy montage on the street was fucking hysterical.
"Thanks, Meat-Cat!"

"Massage it, Kenneth..."

Loved Jenna's country tennis music video. Reminded me that I should watch The Last Boy Scout again...
Maybe it's just because I missed it so much, but I loved this episode. Liz and Pete's complete inability to lie had me rolling.
Uterus!
LOVED Kenneth's Batman voice.
This episode was great. Screw the haters.

Yes!

So you have change for a $10,000 bill?"

To hot dog vender: I'd like some chicken nuggets, beer, and some of my wife's rice to stay!

Also, Tracy getting lost in the elevator had me rolling.
30 Rock has something no other show has. Steve motherfucking Buscemi. Instant win.
Tracy popping up in the elevator and crying "KENNETH, HOW DO I GET OUT OF THIS BUILDING" was my favorite part next to the Josh stuff.

I don't quite know what to make of that handoff to Leno though. It seemed...off somehow.
My DVR must have cut off before that, what happened?

Because Leno appeared to be a part of said joke.

Liz and Jack were watching Jenna's tennis video and Liz said she kinda liked it and they needed to give America what it wants. Then they introduced Leno who said "let's give America what it want's" and he walked out on his stage while some generic dancers were doing the tennis video live.

It was weird. I guess I don't get the joke.

Also Jenna saying the MNF theme plays on her phone when Ray Lewis calls her was funny.
You all know I love this show like no other, but that episode just felt 'off' to me. Can't put my finger on it, really, but not much of it clicked for me. At any rate, glad it's back.

I have a feeling NBC wound not of let them take that low of a blow unless he was.

It was more biting than that. It was more along the lines of America only wanting what was safe and boring and middle of the road, and here's Jay Leno.

Me too. Certainly had some great quotes, moments, etc. Just...weird.

I was amused to read some early reviews from the premiere pointing out, "...and they totally burn Leno at the end! Zing!" Joke was on them, apparently.
"That's why they call me a chameleon - because of my slender frame and my big wet eyes." A dash of Buscemi makes everything taste better.

I also got a big laugh from Tracy's line (and forgive me if I mangle it):
"I'd like you to meet Nobody and his wife, Susan Walters-hyphen-Nobody."

the "hyphen nobody" is what got me. Also liked Jenna's overreaction to the idea of a new cast member.
The Ray Lewis and Comrade Obama's Recession lines were my favorites.

"we are intercoursing each other."

See, I can kind of get behind this as long as we acknowledge that when "off", 30 Rock still manages a solid ten laugh out loud moments ("which elevator am I not afraid of?", "slender frame and wet eyes", Jack pouring himself a cup of Robitussin, "Are you a pre-op transcentaur?") for every 22 minutes. The strike subplot did just kind of peter out, and the search for a new cast member had no resolution whatsoever, so hopefully that will be an ongoing thing rather than a dead end.

Favorite Joke joke: Don't you hate it when you lose the remote, and "your wife starts getting mad because the roof won't close, and the bed that's shaped like your face is getting rained on?"

Favorite random bit of business: Pete's 2-handed gesture from his crotch to Liz's while she talking about "intercoursing each other".
Yeah, not up to snuff. But still guys, this still packs more laughs than anything else on its worst night.

Jack drinking the cough syrup in Kenneth's pat had me rolling.

That was incredible. Also, all the bites from Tracy were hilarious...[Never get rid of Dotcom or Grizz!]
Page Against the Machine warmed up my heart. [Anyone caught more of this?]

Mostly off topic since I started reading some online critics...If they point this show is too insider they don't even get what good humor is...this show works everywhere.

Agreed. Unless "inside baseball" humor entails seeing people in puppet-vision.
"I like you, can I touch the rough parts of your hands?"

and his sincere, childlike delivery coupled with the immediate cut to the guy leaving in a huff had me rolling.

I guess I can see what some people mean about it feeling a little off but only a little. For the most part I loved it and it's just great to have it back.

and "too inside baseball" is a ridiculous criticism to level at this show. The show stopped actually being about the inner workings of a tv show after, what, the first episode or two? At this point that aspect is just a jumping off point for absurdity. Unless the "insiders" they're talking about are just "people who appreciate clever silliness" (in which case, fuck the outsiders) they don't really have a leg to stand on with that claim.
There was some hilarious stuff in there. Thankfully I saw the episode online, so the Jay Leno burn went untainted for me.
I actually watched the Leno opening on Hulu after reading this thread, and I'd encourage you to check it out. It's so painfully unfunny, and obviously an afterthought, that I think it makes the joke even better.
Some people are defending this episode a bit too much. I'm as happy as anybody it's back, but it was REALLY flat. The cast didn't seem to be in their rhythms yet, and the writing reminded me of early 7th-season Gilmore Girls--it felt like it was written by someone who's seen the show a few times, but has little knowledge of the characters.

It certainly had its moments, but this was far from great. Community for the win this week. Here's hoping by next week, they'll all be back in the saddle.
On watching it a second time, it works a lot more smoothly. The jokes are slightly drier than usual for 30 Rock, but the episode works as a whole. Too much Kenneth and Jack, too little Tracy and the common man would be the big-picture problem with the episode.
Minor spoiler about cast for Thursday show...you should check for the video included
post #47 of 553
To go back to ep. 1, whenever you have a man ask another if his name is Swimming, you're on the right track comedically speaking.

Isn't Will Arnett back tomorrow?
The reveal of the Pontiac Aztec absolutely fucking killed me tonight.

Also, the face off between Jack and Will Arnett at the end. "I'm not intending to make this sound gay" "No one is, it just happened."
That's more like it, 30 Rock. Not the greatest episode by any stretch, but a definite improvement.

"I haven't had a book cause me so much trouble since Waldo took a visit to the barber-pole factory!"

Plus, Ireland is the gayest country? Who knew?
