What's wrong with my router?

I use a Linksys WRT54G. I'm not sure which version hardware I have or which version firmware I'm using right now (and I'm not home to check). I think it's about three years old and I've never updated the firmware. The problem is that the router suddenly doesn't want to communicate with my cable modem. I have no problem connecting to the wireless network but I can't get to the internets through the router either wirelessly or by using a hardline. If I plug my laptop directly into the modem I can access the internet just fine.

I tried cycling the power and changing the router channel a few times but that didn't work. And that's about as much as I know how to do. I know just enough computer stuff to seem like a genius to computer illiterates but I'm really a dummy. The Linksys website and forums seem just about worthless.

Thanks.

Maybe check to see if your ISP axed the router? Verizon's done that to me a couple of times, resulting in pain-in-the-ass waiting times and repetitive conversations with dumb-as-rocks domestic tech support supervisors who keep telling me to reset everything and unplug everything and reboot my computer EVEN THOUGH I'VE ALREADY DONE THAT EIGHT TIMES THANK YOU GODDAMN IT.

...sorry, this is just a touchy subject for me. I'm gonna go have some more coffee.

Same thing happened to me. I just set up the router again. Works fine now.

Edit: Also more specifically, I checked the Systems Preferences and it turns out that my laptop had the wrong security password and was overriding any attempts of mine to connect to the router. When I reinstalled the router I also reset the password and that was what fixed the problem.

Update the firmware and check again. That should fix you up.

1. Disconnect router from cable modem
2. Power down router AND cable modem by unplugging the power cords from the back of each unit.
3. Wait 5 minutes.
4. Plug in and power up cable modem only. Wait for all of the status lights to settle down.
5. Plug cable modem back into router.
6. Plug in and power up router.
7. Wait a minute or two. If you still get no connection, then download the newest firmware, update the router, and see if that works. If you're still having problems, you'll probably need to flip a coin and call either the cable company or Linksys first.

Steps 1-6 are usually what I try first whenever I have any kind of connection issue between the router and my cable modem.

everytime my wireless router screws up I forget what to do. Then I unplug everything. If you completely disconnect the power source of the router for even 1 minute that usually solves the problem.

You might need to change broadcast channels, because it's possible that your neighborhood put up new networks that are interfering with your signal. Try moving at least three channels away. I suffered from a similar problem like that - I could usually get an IP address from the router, but I'd almost always have weird, intermittent signal problems - but I knew my internet connection from the modem was fine. Troubleshooting router problems sucks.

Thanks, everybody. I'll try these tricks tonight. If it doesn't work i might have to stab someone. I can't even play my Rock Band DLC because I just got my latest 360 refurb and haven't had a chance to transfer licenses. I blame MDollarSign for that one, though.

Weird. I get home and everything works fine. The internet is a strange and mysterious beast.

Don't be shocked if your ISP did something, then either reversed it, or fixed it on their end. AT&T has gotten me that way a few times. My router worked perfectly in the morning, then suddenly stops working around lunchtime, and AT&T denies they did anything and then doesn't want to help me because I'm not using their wi-fi service or router they offer. The guy sent me a link with instructions on how to set up my router for use with their DSL modem, upon which I discover that the link info vs. the version of the DSL modem they gave me is outdated. So I just hit the reset settings button on the DSL modem, and when it comes back up, it all works again. Idiots.

So my computer has betrayed me again. I get a full signal from my airport, but I cannot connect to the internet. When I go into System Preferences to check the settings I get a message box that says "your network settings have been changed by another application". I get the option "try again' or "ok". Either option results in an endless loop whereby the message reappears.

The last time this happened, as mentioned above, I reset my router, and immediately locked my settings so they couldn't be changed without an admin password. Everything has been fine until last night.

I've done all the suggestions in this thread to no avail. I Googled the message and it seems that this issue is related to the latest Mac security update, but I can't seem to find any solutions. Help!!!!
