Wii suggestions

Hey, I just got a Wii after three years of trying (never had money and opportunity at the same time).

I'm giving it to my son, Kid Vivisector, for his tenth birthday in a couple of weeks.

I'm looking for the collected wisdom of the CHUD faithful regarding this new system. He's had a GameCube for a few years, so we have a small selection of games that are for that system.

He's into driving games, and he likes Call of Duty games. He keeps pestering me to let him play the Grand Theft Auto games. He doesn't like horror based stuff, so I'm still wondering if he's the milkman's kid.

Any games you reccommend, or suggestions on accessories?

Real Heroes: Firefighter

Dr. Vivisector, Does your son like...Fighting Games? Tatsunoko Vs Capcom arrives on the Wii in early 2010.

The Ghostbusters game for the Wii is, by all accounts, superior to its high-powered counterparts in terms of gameplay and fun.

I'd recommend the Metroid Prime games (they just released the collection of them, all redone for the Wii).

For the driving fan, I'd get Super Mario Kart, though it is a paltry imitator to the glory of Mario Kart: Double Dash for the Gamecube.

The Call of Duty games were released on the Wii, I recall and actually got some good press.

And everyone, everyone loves Super Mario Galaxy, and of course, there's no going wrong with The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess.

if you want to put his "horror deficiency" to the test, go with "Dead space: extraction" or "resident Evil: Umbrella chronicles"", since these are rail shooters and you can play together.
"A boy and his blob" comes out this month, I belive, and there's also "Okami", "Legend of zelda: twilight princess"; The "rayman raving rabbids" series of games are the best party games out there 7among with "wario ware".
if he's too young for GTA, go with "Bully", which has a Wii special edition.
Finally, there's also "Marvel ultimate alliance 2", "Punch Out", "Metroid prime trilogy" and "murasama: the demon balde".

The first game made for the Wii that makes actual good of the nunchuck and the remote, IMO.

If you have the Wii online, Mario Kart is a no-brainer, big multiplayer races are where it's at, and they work flawlessly. Otherwise it's probably my least favorite in the series.

Either of the 2 Boom Blox games are great. "Fun for the whole family", it's true!

I hear Excitebots is pretty great but I've yet to play it personally, and CoD: WaW is supposed to be quite well-done on Wii, despite being a bastard child of the PS3/360 version. If you're after a Call of Duty, I'd wait for the Wii port of Modern Warfare coming out around the time of Modern Warfare 2.

Metroid Prime Trilogy, Okami, Rayman Raving Rabbids, Okami, Punch Out, Okami, Boom Blox, Okami, Trauma Center, Okami, World of Goo, Okami, Warioware Smooth Moves, Okami, and I hear Okami's decent.
Second the boom blox games. Nothing better for the Wii.

No they don't.
Jake, why don't you like fun?
I like fun, but Super Mario Galaxy is not it for me. I'll take thirty Ratchet and Clanks over SMG.
I can't even argue because your avatar is adorable.
Just imagine the dog ragin' out over SMG and it's fine.

I also hear that you can buy a PS2 and a copy of "God Hand" for the price of new Wii game instead.

When I was a kid my dad and I always had good quality time with RBI Baseball on the NES. I find the simpler baseball games are more fun, so for the Wii I've only tried MLB Power Pros 2008 (simple, but it does have an RPG-lite mode). It controls more traditionally though, with not a lot of the swinging and flailing the Wii's famous for.

Thanks for the suggestions, keep 'em coming please.

Last night I got a great deal at the Target at which I used to moonlight.

I got the new Wii Sports Resort bundle with the two Wii Motion Plus attachments. They were stacked on the shelf with the price for the Bundle with only one Motion Plus. So they gave it to me for the lower price. I saved about ten bucks and got the game Kid Vivisector has been trying out on every Wii demo in town.

Next thing I need to think about is a cradle.charger for the remotes. I'm hearing they go through batteries at a hellish rate....
My son just picked up Spore Hero for the Wii, and has played it non-stop the past two days.

Oh, even though it's kind of an older game, Super Paper Mario is fun.

On the cradle charger, make sure you try to read reviews...I bought the Tyko(?) charger, and from time to time, it's hard to get the controller to make contact with the charger. Otherwise, it's worked fine.

I say skip any kind of cradle, and just buy some good rechargeable AAs. Most of the existing cradle crap won't work with the Motion+ attached, anyway.

High recommendation for ExciteTruck/ExciteBots. Really fun games.

Agreed. The people I know who've bought these(two different brands) regretted it. Rechargable AAs are the way to go, and they'll come in handy for other things as well.

I use rechargeable batteries for my Wii controllers and my 360 controllers, and they work very well. Make sure you have enough to cycle them in and out, and you'll be golden.

As far as game suggestions go, I'm a little late to the party here, and all of the ones I would have suggested have been recommended at least once in here if not multiple times.
Little King's Story is arguably the best game on the console.
Give it a look.
I know this is off topic, but...I just bought a...Wii, and everything is hooked up, except for the fact that there is no sound. My tv is set on AV, I do not know if that is the wrong setting. I couldn't pass on...Tatsunoko vs Capcom, but it would also be great to hear the game. I know I must be doing something wrong.

Back on topic, I definitely recommend...TMNT Smash Up.
Whats your setup, fleed? Regular TV, HDTV? Is the Wii plugged directly in to it?
Justin Clark, My tv is a widescreen tv. I do not have HDTV cables. First I tried the RF switch and I had sound, but a horrible picture. Then I hooked up those 3 way cable with yellow, white, and red. Could I have forgotten a step? The Wii is plugged directly into the tv.
Thats pretty much right. If at all possible, try plugging the Wii into another TV, see if you get sound out of the red/white/yellow input. If there's still no sound, I'm willing to bet its a bum sound card, which is one of the few things that can commonly go wrong with a Wii. Meaning, you might have to swap for a new one.
Justin Clark, Thank you for the tip. Yes, that would suck, having to exchange my...Wii.
Justin Clark, Disaster averted! But I am such a...DUMBASS! I connected the wires to the tv, just not the correct one in...SOUND!
Happens to the best of us at least once. Glad to hear all's well.
Justin Clark, It is not only well, it is...Wiioooooooooooooonderful. I am currently playing...Muramasa The Demon Blade (a...2D Ninja Epic, with some of the most...Glorious Graphics, I have seen in a long time. I wish there was an anime series like this. I recommend this game for either fans of...2D, teens, and fans of...Ninja! I give it...5 throwing stars out of 5!

An update...

Kid Vivisector was surprised and happy to get his Wii...he's been playing the Resort Sports game with the new sensors. I like the dogfighting game, its been a ball. I'll start looking for some of the games listed here....

Thanks, crew.
