Hiroshima Mon Amour

I rented this as part of a French Film Netflix binge, and because one of my professors wouldn't shut up about it.

This is one of the best films I've ever seen. It's probably the best war movie ever made and there's not a single shot fired. The film does an expert (and poetic) job of weaving together the common threads of war, love, and regret. It's one of those rare films that rings true, even if what it depicts is far away from you in terms of nationality or generation.

Watch it.

I liked it, but I thought the stuff with the german soldier rang a lot more true than the stuff in Japan - I felt there was a fair bit of exoticization, and not much of an insight into how the japanese dude feels (I realise this is probably the point.)

I can see that. The set-up makes you ready for a movie about the relationship, but it's really about Nevers. I think that it's a movie about first loves more than anything else, with the Hiroshima event at once setting that in a sort of relief and being informed by it. First love and Hiroshima are both events where everything changes, after all, and are remembered by some with some severe pain.

I think there is some degree of exoticization, but I think it's a veil that gets pulled back once the movie progresses. Nevers is trying to get away from the tragedy of her past, but no matter what she does or where she goes, she can't escape it (again, like the city of Hiroshima in the film).
