Twin Peaks (1990-1991)

Lately I've been going through a Lynch stride on Netflix and am about to finish off Twin Peaks on Friday when I get Fire Walk with Me.

If this show told me anything it's that we'll probaby ever get anything as good on television as the pilot for Twin Peaks. Everything just works and it's the most unique looking show I've seen. First season is a solid win. Second season is just as good up until Ray Wise departs. Aside from bits like David Duchovny's appearance, the middle section with Cooper/drug case and with a lot of sub-plots I couldn't give a shit about (such as James Hurley on the road) is a real drag. However it's starting to pick up in the last few episodes with Windom Earl surfacing and I like Heather Graham's Annie Blackburn (though I would have liked to see the original plan with Audrey, but I buy Cooper's attraction to Annie (Billy Zane with Audrey seems pointless)).

I'll return to this thread to discuss more Twin Peaks after I finish the flick, I'm so drawn to this whole world that I find it a real shame that it was never fully realized as originally intended. It's too much for one film, and I don't see how it can stretch as a long TV series. Maybe a single season deal with 26 episodes might have done justice.

Yeah, I think the near-universal consensus nowadays is that the series started to flag a bit when you get to the James Hurley-frameup plot (and all the WTF?-stuff with Lucy's unborn kid), but it rises to fucking near-magnificence again once Windom Earle enters the picture. And that final, Lynch-directed hour is one of the single greatest stretches of uninterrupted, 180-proof weirdness I've ever had the pleasure to witness on network television.

The feature film is absolutely sublime, though I was one of the initial quasi-haters when it first came out. Now I find it to be one of Lynch's best. Funny, that.

Finished the finale. Damn. I honestly wouldn't have minded if they continued doing this show at the time. I like the characters enough to see what happens to them next. It was strange seeing Laura's prom photo at end of credits after the solving of the case because she was gone and so was Sheryl Lee almost altogether. This was probably the ultimate mistake. Laura's death could have simply been the catalyst that lead to the mythology of Bob/Black Lodge, instead of being the main focus so the second season wouldn't have been so damn jarring. Too many factors went against this show that resulted in its cancellation, should have been much more thought out.

Now, should there be any further development of the show in some form? At this time, I say no. I find the fnale to be so great that a lot of those unresolved storylines are best left to the imagination. I totally would have loved more in 1991, so I won't lose sleep if it never gets resolved. I'm glad we got something good out of it in the long run. I look forward to getting the Gold Box set someday and rewatch this show with the bigger picture in mind.
