David Cross is hardcore

In an interview with Newser, Tobias from Arrested Development says that he was dared to snort a line of the white stuff at the White House Correspondents Dinner (which was not held in the White House, unfortunately). David took the dare even though President Obama was only a few skips away. Why so hardcore, David?

David said, “It’s crazy and there’s security, Secret Service is standing there. I’ve got photos of all this. … I’m there and the president is right here and with all these people at the table. Maybe 40 feet from the president of the United States!”

He's been hardcore for years.

I love the guy in just about everything else he does, but despise his standup.

The last three presidents have all tried cocaine, right? Or did Clinton deny it?

Also, is Cross in the legal clear by admitting to this? Can you be charged for admitting illegal drug use from a few months ago?

His new book suuuuucks, though. Glad I thumbed through it instead of impulse-buying.

I still want to read the rest, but from what I read thumbing through it in the store, I'm saddened to admit that I agree with you there.

The audiobook version is pretty good, though. There's all these little asides where he chastises the listener for getting the audiobook version instead of the real book, but then has all these special guests pop up from time to time as well as other little Easter eggs, like when he starts a chapter reading from Star Jones' memoirs. The whole thing starts off with H. Jon Benjamin reading from Cross' book, which then leads to a huge screaming match between the two, and then he has Les Savy Fav sing an entire chapter in which he lists a bunch of quirks that could be used in indie films.

From what I understand, there's a chapter in the book devoted to his "feud" with Larry the Cable Guy, which seems about four years too late. Still, I do like his stand up.

Well, I'm sure those are just the republished blogs from his website. And they were AWESOME.

Good call on the audiobook. That might be worth snagging. I just though, written out, a lot of the stuff I did read didn't play as well without the voice and tone behind it.

They were awesome four years ago. Maybe there's a chapter on how Evanescence isn't a very good band, and how the lead singer from Creed is dumb.

Mr. Show refused to do out-and-out parodies, which I thought was a good call, but their pop culture send ups might not be holding up these days.

If they can still crank out stuff like this, I'm fine with a Mr. Show reboot.

The stuff that didn't rely on pop culture digs are perennials.

I like David Cross, but c'mon, this was an asshole move. Doesn't Obama have enough bullshit to deal with? Now he'll be accused of throwing coke parties with his librul-commie friends.
Agree.
Although, if you notice, he said all this during a bit. He didn't have an interview with a member of the press or anything and go spouting this stuff off.

We don't truly know the context this was said in at all. I mean, I saw him do a bit once where he swore up an down he had fucked his dog. Doubt he really did.

He's easily my favorite stand-up... why no love? Just don't agree with his politics? I can listen to him talk all day, cracks me up.

Just saw him do stand-up and his material about shitting his pants twice in the last year was amazing. As was the musical introduction.

His book is so fucking bad. I want my ten bucks back. I impulse ordered it when I saw him on The Daily Show. I'll never do that again without getting the sample chapter first. Ugh.

His "Shut Up, You Fucking Baby" was 70% complaining. He forgot the jokes.

That's too bad. Saw him at the Wiltern in LA lastmonth and he was great. Far more polished than the previous times I've seen him. I love his stand-up.

Eh, I hate everything, so I guess I could relate.

Yeah, he really managed to combine ridiculous comedy bits (the aforementioned opening musical number and the guy doing sign language off-stage for his jokes) along with his rantier material (basically stating he hates hasidic jews without any sort of joke or payoff). I thought it was a nice evolution of the previous iterations of his act I've seen.

That little kid in the bald wig "Why do deaf people sound like Russians with burnt tongues when they talk?" bit slayed me.

Shut Up You Fucking Baby has jokes. It's Not Funny is however pretty appropriately named.
It's Not Funny had some good moments, like Bullety the friendly fire bullet. "Hi, Bullety!"
That's pressboard, you can break through that shit. C'mon. HOW DO YOU NOT FUCK THAT?

I was at the show where he told this story. I'm assuming how it broke, as I was at the DC show, and he came back out at the end after someone encouraged him back stage to tell his "DC story." It was the last show of the tour, and this brok the day after.

Anyways, here's how he framed it: he got into the dinner because of his girlfriend, he has an ongoing "top this!" feud with a good friend of his, and he did this to win it. He obviously found it hilarious, but didn't make it out to be as big a deal as it seems here -- just said he got his girlfriend's attention to witness it, and that was that. Got the sense it was his first time telling the story on stage, but I could be wrong.

Show was fun. Not as funny as It's Not Funny (which I prefer to Shut Up), but a good time.

Hey everybody, it's opposite day!

I heard It's Not Funny first, and I still love the hell out of it. I later picked up Shut Up You Fucking Baby, and was really disappointed. As Phil said, just an hour of bitching and moaning. I don't buy comedy albums just to hear someone be angry. Plus, on It's Not Funny, he gets back to attacking the culture, which is what he's best at.

Well put, Phil. It's not that I disagree with his politics. It's that his standup often comes across like he's the overly opinionated guy at the party who's had just enough alcohol to start trying to annoyingly hold court, and is arguing with no one in particular at an elevated decibel level. It's like that, but I paid to listen and can't just go into the other room to get away.

No, THAT was well put.

I like Cross; I was really bummed about that album.

True, and after reading Flyarz details, his stunt doesn't seem quite so dickish.
