The Tournament (2009)

Whoa Nellie. What a blast. Way more splatter than I was expecting.
Plenty of exploding people to go around. Somerhalder steals most of the show. He's stumbled onto something good here. He should play more roles like Slade.

He was good, also dug parkour guy. His fight with Kelly Hu on the double-decker bus was sublime.

I read some reviews claiming that Rhames was sleepwalking. Didn't see that at all. He's obviously downbeat, but that goes with the character.

The guy in the beginning who tries to take out Hu in the hotel room is Sol from DOOMSDAY.
Ving was ok, but I would have rather spent more time with guys like BOGART and Adkins.
His drunken spitting and rambling at the end was kind of funny, though.

Ving: DIDN'T AHH....PUT ON A GOOD SHOW....FUH YOU???

Tournament Guy: NoNo Wait--!!!!!!!!!!!

*gigantic meat explosion*

Other than jumping around a lot I don't know what more they could have done with Bogart. He had his niche and he filled it well.

More Adkins would have been great though.

I can't believe Father Macavoy's odds didn't improve toward the end. Even when there was like 5 people left he was still 500-1.

More jumping around would have been fine with me!

Padre Macavoy's odds should have improved dramatically when it was revealed that he was a natural double decker bus driver.

Bogart riding around with his feet on the front of the police car was terrific.

I wanted to know more about the dude with the bazooka. Guy makes it to the final five and all I really saw him do was blow up some RV during that montage.
Was that the same guy who showed up at the end riding a SISSY SCOOTER?

Yes indeed. Just when it looked like he was gonna make his mark... SMASH!

2009 has been a banner year for DTV action. Driven to Kill... Blood and Bone... Stiletto... (some would say but not me!)Command Performance... and now The Tournament! I would be hard pressed to pick my favorite so far this year but Blood and Bone is neck and neck with The Tournament. Its just a non stop mean spirited blood bath. It reminded me of Punisher War Zone, but this is a struggle for survival while the elite watch and throw money on the table. The action rivals anything that is out in the theaters. I think my favorite competitor was the parkour guy. The scene where he takes out that lady sniper (who was about to shoot the stubbled and weary priest Carlyle) was great. Though I think my favorite scene was when the guy's body exploded inside that convenience store, getting blood and guts everywhere and ruining the shop owner's business forever! The only bad parts are when its focusing on the backstory of Ving Rhames and Kelly Hu's characters, and Scott Adkins is only a cameo sized role. Those two nerds in the control room were awful too, but they are small parts of the movie and you forget all about it when the action starts.

I didn't mind the backstory between Hu and Rhames. You gotta have something to tie them together to make the finale even more pulsating than it was.

The tech guys were lame, as they tend to be in all movies save for DIE HARD, but like you said they don't get enough time to fuck up the movie all that much.
I like how Macavoy is all "NO NO PLEASE DON'T EXTINGUISH THIS LIFE!!!!!" when Hu is about to kill the crazy redneck guy. But when redneck guy literally explodes in his face you get a really laid back "eww...." reaction from Macavoy.

Well that was the second body-explosion that Father Macavoy had witnessed. The shock becomes less and less with each instance.

I was impressed by how calm the store clerk was when he got the phone call post-being covered in redneck blood.

"Hello, Mill's Service Station."

Never heard of this flick, but it's shooting to the top of my NF Q.

Hopefully you'll get it soon, Ratty. Rental-wise in stores I think it's a Blockbuster exclusive because of its mangled release from the Weinsteins. Don't know if that also has an impact on its Netflix availability.
I'm still waiting to see this. I know the boys have great praise for it and we talked about this ma'fucka for a minute. My cum load will be heavy when I witness this action opus and Kelly Hu looking fine as hell for a 40 year old.

I know I will have many great ideas after I witness this movie.
Holy shit, does not disappoint.

Dug the double decker bus fight with Casino Royale's parkour guy, but I think my favorite encounter was still Hu fighting that awesome Russian dude in the church. He would have won the whole thing if Father Macavoy hadn't distracted him during the "baptism"; if Ving tried his little shoe trick he'd just grenade the shit out of the place! Also really enjoyed the bit with Sol when she garrotte wire's his fingers off and then he punches the wall with the stubs, yeowch!

This really is a phenominal year for DTV action.

Vern MUST review this!
Been trying to rent this one from Netflix. Too bad it's not available on Blu-Ray.

Rent UNDISPUTED 2 if you want to see more impressive action scenes from RUSSIAN DUDE (aka british action superstar Scott Adkins).

Undisputed 2 is awesome! Can't wait for the third one and Ninja.
Holy fuckshit how have I not heard of this movie until now? Double-decker bus fights with Kelly Hu? Meat explosions? The Rhames? Shit, I know what I'm doing with my lunch break.
Fun flick. I was kind of hoping for Carlyle to bring a little Begbie into his character by the end instead of being a simpering priest the whole time, but it was still fun.

Puppetmasters always fall for that "Meet The Final Winner" ploy, don't they?

I enjoyed that Carlyle stayed true to his character all the way through, though technically his slamming of the bus brakes did take out the parkour guy.
One of the absolute fucking best action DTV's I've seen! The director has massive fucking talent. Great show.
I've been thinking about importing the Blu-Ray. Anyone know if it's a good Blu-Ray?
Read this thread and got it from netflix. Really good movie,i enjoyed the hell out of it
post #28 of 56
Saw this one on the big screen today.

The Parkour guy sure was impressive. Along with Ving Rhames entrance into that bar. Plenty of action and gore. High production values.

One of the most important things I ask from my action flicks is never to be bored. And I was never bored here. The Tournament is one entertaining flick.

Two things though

1) Wish we had more of Scott Adkin's Russian killer than crazy American Cowboy guy.
2) Kelly Hu was okay. But I can't help but wonder if Maggie Q would've been better in her role.

Still wondering... How in the hell lil' ass Singapore gets these DTV(s) on the big screens? And you never answered my bucket of duck feet question...

She would've be aight. Too skinny.

You notice the hot chick in the attack SUV whilst they were on the public pay phone out-in-the-fucking-wide-open? Easy targets for sure - but they alluded the attack. Anywho, the girl I was talking about was the chick from DIE ANOTHER DAY, almost harming Bond in the Hong Kong hotel room.

She's a hot one...

Just lucky I guess. Can't explain the reasoning.

I suspect we'll get TEKKEN and KING OF FIGHTERS on the big screen as well. Instead of DTV. Thesee properties are big in Asia and I suspect they'll want to bank on that.

I've never eaten Duck Feet. Really.
WHY U CUM AFTUH ME LAI LAI blaarghhhhhhhh
post #32 of 56
I notice they never explained what drove Carlyle to drink. I expected a sob story or something.

"I WAS WEAK!"

Edit- Holy Shit. Just read Wiki that this film was made in 2007. And its taken 2 years to get it released? What was the holdup?
Goddammit, I need to see this flick!

Still debating whether or not I should import the Blu-Ray from Canada.

Just watch the movie and debate that later. You'll enjoy it.
Did anyone get a Terminator 2 vibe in that Tanker road scene?

Also CHUD also got mentioned in Vern's review of this.

Glad this is kickass. Will watch soon.

Wasn't this originally a trailer full of no names made to pitch the movie?
Ving Rhames, Robert Carlyle and Kelly Hu. Not exactly a cast of unknowns.

We at the B-Action Thread have been waiting for this for years though. We only caught a rare Trailer of this off YouTube. There's been very little promotion for this.
Went ahead and imported the Blu-Ray from Canada. I hope the picture and audio quality are decent.

That guy was sloppy anyway. Why did he even need to kill the busboy and steal his clothes if his whole plan was to sneak up from behind?
*Hu turns around*
"Oh hey, I'm just a busboy climbing through the window! Not a killer!"

It's a stressful situation for a guy to be in. He's trying to get the first kill in an illustrious time-honored battle of assassins for a hefty cash prize. Rare is a man who can be thinking clearly in such a setting.

Plus he was angling for some necro-nookie.

Fuck yes!

Would not have known about this if it weren't for you fine ass people!

This was a lot of fun. Could have used more Adkins and an ending that popped (god help me no pun intended to Ving Rhames) more as it went to credits but shit this was awesome.

Blood and Bone, Stiletto, Universal Soldier Regeneration and Driven to Kill is on my must see list now. Any other DTV recommendations?
Scott Adkin's NINJA, Seagal's latest DTV flick A DANGEROUS MAN.

Also look out for UNDISPUTED 3 later this year.

Those four are all good. STILETTO is trashy, but in a fun way. The scenes between Michael Biehn and his young girlfriend are a howl.

To those I'd add COMMAND PERFORMANCE, THE FIFTH COMMANDMENT (terrific supporting turn from Keith David in that one), and WRONG TURN AT TAHOE. TAHOE is more on the crime drama side than all-out action but it's surprisingly good for a Cuba Gooding flick thanks mainly to Miguel Ferrer who is sensational.
BLOOD AND BONE and UNIVERSAL SOLDIER: REGENERATION are both must-see movies. Particuarly BLOOD AND BONE, if you have any fondness for those early 90s Van Damme classics.
Is the DVD for this out yet? Any extras?

Definitely liked this flick. I say its a step over NINJA and a little below UNIVERSAL SOLDIER: REGENERATION.
This was way more violent than expected but it's one of the best made action movies I've seen in ages, this thing is paced incredibly well. Sebastian Foucan was absolutely badass, I knew he wasn't going to make it but he owned this film. Shame Scott Adkins had to exit the film so prematurely but hey, them's the rules.
This is at THE top of my to-watch pile! Just need to set aside the time.
Wow. This was pretty great. Not just for a DTV flick, but in general. Very entertaining. Shame it didn't get a theatrical release.

The priest's involvement was a surprise for me. I figured he was just another assassin (albeit an ironic one) from the front cover.

There could easily be a prequel/sequel to this, since the tournie happens every 7 years.
Someone get Scott Mann a bigger budget, because this is one of the most entertaining action flicks I've seen in ages. Shit was insane, particularly the Adkins/Hu fight, Bogart being dragged in front of the car while plugging away and the double-decker bus scene.

Only complaint is that Rhames goes a bit broad at the end. Also, is it in Adkins' contract that he be allowed to do a terrible Russian accent in every one of his movies?
