China took "Fallout 3" way to seriously...

Nothing funny about this one, but the thread needed a good title...

Lu Guang's photographs look like concept art for some dystopian future. But they're actually very modern images of China and Mongolia, where entire towns have been consumed by toxic chemicals, sewage, and grime thanks to industrial waste.

Earlier this month, Guang was awarded the W. Eugene Smith Grant in Humanistic Photography for his series "Pollution in China." These images were taken in various factory towns around China and Mongolia, showing how the byproducts of industry have devastated the regions. Perhaps most remarkable is that these towns are still very much inhabited, with people living and suffering under these apocalyptic conditions.

More of this here...

Oh god... that's heartbreaking . Unless we invent an alternative to fossile fuels right now, photos like this make me worry we're all doomed.

It's not that PK. It's because there's no regulations there.

I know. And they'll never regulate unless they're on the verge of revolution. My point about developing new tech is that it would force the Chinese to do the same, lest they fall behind. If we can do it cheaper and cleaner than coal, will China really want to turn their entire country into an FO3 cosplay nation? Will their citizens accept that level of disgusting toxic filth if they know there is a cheaper cleaner way their government could be modernizing?

I LOVE it when a plan comes together...

Wow. Some of those photos are absolutely amazing.

I often have to visit Shandong province for work, and certain mornings in Jinan have been so smoggy that I can barely see 10 feet in front of me. Its gotten a little better the last few years as manufacturing is moving to even cheaper labor areas in China (basically just spread out the problem) and some companies are actually starting to finally respect pollution laws, but its still horrible.

Didn't parts of the West look like that after our industrial revolution?

Yeah, in particular Poland and a lot of Northern England were pretty fucked from an enviromental stand point. It's only because we introduced regulations at the time that we did that we didn't end up looking like massive sludge pits.

Interestingly if you go to the real industrial heartland of Britain and look at the trees and plant life around the industrial sectors they're far hardier than plantlife from other areas of the country. Nature just sort of adapted in its own little way.

Of course, we've already had our own Point Lookout in S.C. for decades.

Junior's right though, even around the turn of the century folks still had to wade around waste and dog corpses at Coney Island. This is a great place to plug one of my favorite recommendation books - The Good Old Days--They Were Terrible!

And I don't mean to brag (at fucking all!) but what they call the Bayway, snuggled in between Manhattan, Newark Airport and Staten Island, is a fairly accomplished industrial wasteland. Vast, unforgiving and tear-inducing. Even Isaac Asimov was moved to call it "Mordor".

These pics make it harder to doubt that the Zombie Holocaust will begin in China.

woo "Modern" China...

New Jersey doesn't look quite as bad, now. . . .

It's bad enough already, but next they're gonna have to deal with this guy:

Won't be long now

Oh, and here I thought it was going to be a story about this. (Link is not really safe for work, life, or people who like babies)

What is wrong with this nation?

They're eating up the endangered animals of other countries now. Where is Tony Jaa when you need him?

I read it, but I'm at work so couldn't click the link. I intend to do that when I get home (aprox 2 hours from now)

That's the price of the global demand for cheap manufacturing.

Holy crap that is awe inspiringly scary!
Seriously, is it a hoax?
The baby soup article is decried as a hoax on several sites, but I cannot find a single answer that also responds to that article in particular. Everything seems to be referring to an artist who, through performance art, did eat a fetus or made it look like he barbecued a fetus. None of the stuff, Snopes, etc., seem to address that particular Seoul Times article. So... no clue.
I'm Pro-Choice, but I draw the line at fetus eating.

Fuck, I hope that it's a hoax.

Greed without limits:

CHINA'S COPPER MINE ENDANGERS ANCIENT 2600 YEAR OLD HOLY BUDDHIST SITE IN AFGHANISTAN

They can't be bothered to do any real archeology or conservation, apparently

This is an outrage. It was bad enough when the Taliban blew up the giant stone Buddhas previously*, but now we're letting one of the great cultural/historical treasures of the world slip away due to greed and a lack of patience. This site is old enough that Alexander himself may well have visited it, it breaks my heart to see the Chinese do this

"Pity them, Ptolemy, they know not what they do.."

*one of the most moronic displays of religiosity of all time. Their stated reason for the crime against world history? They didn't want people "worshipping" them instead of Allah. Too bad they never bothered to read a book other than the Koran, because then they'd know that the point of Buddhism is not to worship Siddhartha Gautama. He's revered as a teacher and philosopher, not a god :: polar bear facepalm::

So.. is China's government COMPLETELY evil, or just extremely apathetic?
I don't mean to sound too ignorant or racist here (and I'll admit, I am fairly ignorant to happenings on the other side of the globe), but the more I see the more I tend to feel that the general (stereotypical if you will) China is evil and soulless. Not to say Chinese people are evil and soulless, I know several very nice Chinese people. But seriously, the slack to no waste regulations, whatever animals they'll eat live, and now baby soup to grant them "sexual powers". WTF seriously. Are the people in power in China all as crazy as Kim-Jong Ill, or just blissfully stupid when it comes to analyzing ones own actions?
It's not my intent to offend anybody by saying this, I'm just generally baffled by some things I've read recently.
The baby eating thing is a hoax. There seem to be a number of reasons to be concerned about the things China gets up to but lets not go crazy with the paranoid xenophobia here.
Okay well there's that, but considering the ridiculously random shit people will shove down their craw in hopes of being more virile, I wouldn't be all THAT surprised if it weren't a hoax.
