"I think the term emergency declaration sounds more dramatic than it really is," said Dr. Peter Hotez, a research professor and chairman of the Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Tropical Medicine at George Washington University. "It's largely an administrative move that's more preemptive ..." He said such a step would give emergency rooms and hospitals the flexibility they need.
This is the most boring emergency of all time.

This strain of flu is not only no more of a threat than other strains, which kill far more people each year, but it is even less so because it is so rare.

Now the 1918 strain of H1N1, Spanish Influenza, that was a national emergency. Still, with today's medicine we'd probably suffer "only" 2-5% of that pandemic's world-wide death toll.

Give us the Captain Tripps strain, please.

The whole point is to prevent the disease from becoming an epidemic, nit waiting for it to kill thousands of people then doing something about it.

My understanding of this issue is that the virus is not a danger now, they're worried it will mutate into something more deadly and that the public will have no immunity for it. Right now, we have no immunity, but the virus is not that bad. They're concerned it might become the Spanish Flu essentially. I work with the public, and I'll just tell you that at my job we're hearing pretty apocalyptic decrees and memos from the Massachusetts State Department. They're planning for some pretty scary scenarios. I'm a little frightened, to be honest.

Your understanding is wrong. It's as deadly as a normal flu, but unlike the normalstrains, this one kills younger people as well, if not more. In fact, older people tend to survive it better.
