Getting my Xbox on wifi

I know that there's an official wifi adapter for the Xbox but it is stupidly expensive. Do I have to use that device or can I buy something cheaper?

I use a wireless bridge made by D-Link, and it works pretty swell. And it was about half the price of the Microsoft one.

No, you can buy cheaper adapters. I use the Belkin Wireless G Gaming adapter, but I'm sure there are others.

That seems to cost exactly as much as the Xbox one.

I had my 360 wirelessly connected to my home network for over three years. I used a Linksys wireless gaming router that I had bought for my original Xbox, and it seemed to work fine.

After my wireless router failed, I was unable to connect my 360 wirelessly to my new router. I found that I was able to unobtrusively sneak a 50 ft Cat5 cable from upstairs down to my 360 in the living room.

Once I got that physical connection, I have no more connection problems, ever. No lag, no disconnects, and most importantly, my Netflix streaming is now full strength, HD quality. I'm not sure if it was something in my network, but the unreliablity of testing to see if your wireless network is running at full strength was a chap in my hide that I am gladly without now.

Just something to think about, if you Netflix a lot (which I know you do. I spy on you.)

To Piggy back on what Chris said, I've got the cable going from the wall to my wireless router, which sits right next to my 360 and TV, that way I can run another cable form the router directly into my 360 and pick up the internet signal wirelessly. Would that setup work for you at all in this situation?

That's odd - it looks like new versions of that Belkin adapter skyrocketed in price over the last two years. I see a used one on amazon for $50, and the linksys one for $79 is probably just as good.

My router is on the other side of a very big apartment. I wouldn't want to run a wire that far.

I connect my 360 to my laptop. It works fine.

Here's a how-to for it.

Dumb question, can you move the router?

No.

Short term answer, find a cheap Belkin adapter, if it exists. Long term answer, call your ISP, or preferably a friend who knows who to do these things for free/cheap, and get another outlet installed. Even if you have to pay 100 bucks or whatever for the outlet, having the 360 directly connected will probably be better than what even the best wireless receivers will produce.

Not sure if you've found something or not yet, Devin but the Wireless G adapter for the XBox (made by Microsoft) is down in price by about $30 I think. The new Wireless N adapter is out and it's $100. Just figured I'd mention it in case you haven't found a solution yet and wanted to pick it up.

Short answer is you're basically just gonna have to put the money down for the wireless adapter if you want a wireless setup. On the bright side, it does work really well.

If you've got an N network, make sure to get the Wireless-N adapter, as you'll get better speed from it.

Some Wireless N access points can be setup to run in bridge mode. And several N access points are less than 50 bucks.

I'm seeing on eBay the old 360 wireless adapters running around $55. So depends on your budget.
