The official "Identity" discussion thread

The trailers are touting this one as "horrifying", so, it deserves a little love on the Corner message boards.

Seen the film? Want to talk about it? Do it here...and be sure to include spoiler warnings if your post deserves one.

Seeing it tommorrow, instead of tonight (see post re: Wrong Side of Desk in the Chewers forum. %(&#%@# boyfriend).

It'll be interesting to see how this gets classified on the DVD racks at Best Buy....

It is more of a psychological horror film than anything else...

Great movie- I think horror fans will dig this one.

It's good - not great. Almost impossible to discuss without venturing into spoiler territory. I will say it errs too much on the glib side of things. I think when it all boils down it seems a little too facile. But it's a fun ride while it lasts. Good performances and some wonderfully moody sets with the motel. Worth checking out at least.

i definitely dont want to spoil anything so i'll keep my opinion brief and simple. I thought it kicked ass...it took a familiar plot and injected fresh twists and awesome performances from everyone. John Hawkes steals the show in my opinion. Movie was great, i definitely recommend.

It was fucking awesome

Arg, it's way too easy to get into spoilers, this post may be considered spoilery in that it alludes...

That's a lot of its charm though. Very smooth sailing for a movie full of chaos, a nice contradiction. The misdirection is fab.

I really liked it a lot. And as much I hate the practice of immediately trying to figure out the secrets of a plot, it's kinda hard to avoid here, and it's a lot of fun with this movie, I gave up halfway through. And I daresay, the secret's almost foolproof.

And I LOVED all that rain...

I just saw this movie tonight...I thought it was a really cool idea, but I guess I was expecting more.....Don't get me wrong, I liked the flick but when watching the previews and seeing quotes such as "even scarier than the ring" (which for the record is one of only two movies that have scared me shitless) I kinda expected it to be more horror like I guess. But it's a great psychological suspense thriller. 3 out of 5...Just see it before the trailers start showing more!!!

Liked it a helluva lot. Like everyone's said it took an over-done concept and gave it a whole new spin, and was really very original in the way it worked throughout. The ending had me a bit cheesed, but when taken in context with the rest of the movie it does make sense.

We'll have a full review up Monday, for sure.

Atta boy.

Couldn't check it out myself last night. I will soon.

Great acting, well written story, different concept, but for some reason, it didn't do anything for me. Not a bad movie in the least, just something that didn't grab my interest/attention, and I can't put my finger on why.

Chalk this one up as something that categorically qualifies as a very "Me" movie. I loved it and had a total blast. From the cast and script to atmosphere and score.

Anyone else notice the glaring continuity error with the digital clock? The time is identified (no pun intended) as 3 am, yet within a few minutes, the clock on the bedstand next to Clea Duvall reads 12:20. A little later, another digital clock reads a "back on track" time of 3:20.

The more I reflect on this one, the more I liked it. And I was pretty ecstatic fresh out of the theater.

Is there any way this thread could turn into a true "discussion thread"? Maybe just throw down the "spoiler" gauntlet and let those of us that bothered to go and see it talk about it? I mean, shit, how much can I say without ruining something? (The clock thing ain't a spoiler.)

P.S.

When we can start talking about it, remind me to mention how it reminded me of a specific, really cool, Rod Serling authored Night Gallery episode.

It's not out in the UK till June (or mabe July) so please don't post spoilers without warnings.
I think the safest bet would be to start another topic and just label it "The Offical Identity Spoiler thread" or something like that.

I liked it a lot. Very well made, in just about every aspect. Cusack was especially fantastic.

I didn't notice the error on the clock. Leave it to The Inspector with his giant magnifying glass to spot something like that.

It was good, but not as good as Cooney's "Jack Frost" or "Jack Frost 2: Revenge of the Mutant Killer Snowman".

There's a Session 9 influence in there as well.

Thanks Malacoda for the spoilers in your other thread you started for Identity. Your a Fucking punk for giving away the whole plot.

I was really enjoying the film until I figured out what was going on, as well.

Unfortunately, I figured out what was going on 20 seconds into the film.

A very intriguing and interesting premise wasted. Maybe it has something to do with Cooney's previous writing credits.

It reminds me a lot of Steve Niles with the 30 Days Of Night comic. Wonderful concept. Poor execution.

I do have a question though. The scene right before Jake Busey gets caught has him in the rain leaving what I thought was the hotel and then ending up in the hotel again. Was I confused or was he leaving someplace else?
That was one of the first big clues that something Twilight Zoney was happening and not just a reality-based whodunnit. Don't forget, Busey actually sees that he's approaching the Motel (which he was running from) and is dumbfounded. Says something like "what the fuck" as he realizes it.

It started happening for a lot of the characters and at one point Cusak even told Amanda Peet to take Clea Duval and the kid in the car and just drive. If they couldn't get far in one direction, they were to turn around and try the other way and keep trying until they got someplace else. He (being the most intuitive and "aware" character) started suspecting at that point that none of them could leave. He was hoping he was wrong, but wanted to see if it were possible for them to get anywhere else.

I saw this once, last weekend, so my memory is hazy, but if you remember, the "leaving only taking you back" thing happened a couple of times. It was another part of the mental trappings: there was no where else to go.
