Nook; the Barnes and Noble e-Reader - Page 3

So I got a NookColor for christmas. On it right now, actually. I like it but after getting a droid x and both kindle and nook apps I wasn't planning on getting an ereader. Not sure whether to return it or not. It just feels a lot like I'm using my phone with a larger screen but less features.

I got a NookColor, too. I also have reservations at this point, but I am willing to accept that the thing has a bit of a learning curve. Engadget states that it will be upgrading to Froyo and adding Flash support in the coming weeks which will make the thing an Android tablet of sorts. That sweetens the deal enough for me to give it a chance.

I got one for an early Christmas present. Rooting it made it near perfect for me.

I had a Nook and loved it. Got a Nook Color for Christmas and love it even more.

Just found out that I can borrow ebooks from the library on here and spent the morning reading Hitch-22. Sold!

So when are we all going to start lending books to each other?

Hey Richard, congratulations on your Nook Color. I didn't know if you'd decided whether or not you were going to get. Was it a surprise or a request?

I've been apart of the Nook cloud since April and i've never tried lending. I'm down with book swapping with you guys.

It was a surprise. I'd hinted that I was interested in one, but that I'd want to look at one first. But there it was under the tree (in a deceptively small box, I might add).

Nice surprise. I wanted to wake up to the NC on Christmas Day, but my husband didn't feel like indulging me. He just told me to go and get it when I wanted it, and I did just that.

He DID help me root it though, and damn if he isn't on this thing as much as I am. I'm using it much more than I thought I would--the screen is superb.

Are you planning on rooting it, or are you going to wait for the BN 2.2 update?
I'm gonna hold off on the rooting until the next update to see how the Flash support goes.

One small glitch, and it's mostly cosmetic: a good handful of books I moved over aren't showing the covers in the list view. Not a huge deal, and it's a widely occurring issue, so I'm not too worried about it.

Are you on Mobile Reads? There's a loooong thread about covers not showing up on sideloaded books, and how to go about fixing it.
To be honest, it didn't bother me enough to go through the hassle of spending extra time in Calibre, so I just let them be. After I rooted though, they all showed up.

I didn't want to root at first, I tried to resist and wait for the update like with the original Nook. I think being a heavy Android user kind of hurt me, because I'm used to a certain kind of browser, and the Nook's browser was just too mediocre to get used to.

I'm currently trying the fix where you convert everything to MOBI format then back to EPUB. I'll see how that goes.

I really want to root but I'm going to wait for the update as well. Hope they realize what people are really interested in with their product.

As far as the LendMe thing, I've only got a handful of books that aren't borrowed from the library on there now- a couple Richard Mathesons, a Greg Gifune collection, and a bunch of those free ones I nabbed up (Complete Sherlock Holmes!) Be willing to lend to anyone who wants- I guess pm me your address or hit me up on facebook.

Also- did anyone get a case? I'm pretty pissed that the cheapest ones on BN are 30 bucks and looking for a better alternative. I do like the ones with stands, though...

I bought a carrying case for it. It rarely leaves the house though. It was $11 on clearance at our local Borders which is going out of business. It's just your standard 7 inch eReader case, nothing fancy. It fits just fine.

Other than that, no other accessories.

Well, still not seeing all the covers, but it's hardly a deal-breaker. I love that all your books appear in one list now.

And the Nook Color fits nicely into the carrier I had for the original Nook, so bonus points there.

I played with one of the Nook Colors a bit over Christmas. Not a bad little tablet. Every video I tried to play on it was dropping frames left and right though--even their own.

I feel like if it were running a slightly more stock build of Android it would have been better to use.

Trying to go through with family members how to check books out onto them from Overdrive was a pain though.

Video experience is fine for me, but I only have two videos on it.

One thing I like about rooting it is that I can put Overdrive content directly onto the device without all of the sideloading shenanigans.
But even on the regular Nook, I don't find putting library books on the device to be anymore difficult than sideloading regular books through Calibre.
It's not meant to be a fully functional tablet that can play videos and shit. The company is working on that from what I hear, but it's primarily always going to be a device meant for reading, and any applications down the line will reflect that.

Anybody has any specific questions, send me a PM.

Geez, I looked at the "how to" page for softrooting a Nook Color, and it just seems like more bother than it's worth.

Really? It was pretty easy, just a few steps. Write the SD card, stick it in the NC, boot it up and then log in with your gmail/youtube account. I actually had to do it twice, and the second time I timed myself, it took less than twenty minutes.

You have to do the auto-nooter method, not the regular root.

Just like to say that this thing has not left my side. It's my new best friend. I cuddle up with it instead of my wife at night. I've let my daughter slap it around while reading those Nookbooks for kids (Richard Scarry's Colors and Rudyard Kipling's Elephant's Trunk were free).  I have ten library books loaded onto it right now.

The library books are making it worth it- sure, the selection isn't all that but there's dozens of books that I want to read. I think I've read almost twenty novels in the last two months.

But I still have no lendme friends! Anyone?
