Your typical daily routine

Thread Starter
Just curious. I know my days are vastly different than most people. So what's a typical work day like for you? Here's mine:

- Awakened at 6:15 am by my daughter talking (best case) or screaming on the baby monitor.
- Wife hits the shower, I get up and grab my daughter. We go downstairs and I start setting up breakfast for the kids.
- 6:30 AM. My son wakes up and comes downstairs. I start coffee and feed the kids. Wife still upstairs getting ready for work.
- Wife comes downstairs. I get a brief respite to go to the bathroom and get dressed.
- 7:15 AM. I cajole my son to get dressed. At 7:20, I drive him to school. My daughter usually tags along.
- 7:50 AM. I arrive back home with my daughter. If my wife is still home, I get another chance to go to the bathroom. If not, I get to wait until my daughter's nap at 1:00 to take a shit. Fun!
- 8:00 AM - 12:00 PM. Play with my daughter, watch kids' TV shows, clean, do laundry, browse Chud/Twitter on my phone, run errands etc.
- Noon- 1:00. Lunch.
- At 1:00, put my daughter down for her nap. Nap can range anywhere from 30 minutes to 3 hours.
- 1:15 - 3:00 (average nap) first moments to myself all day. I should get stuff done, but usually end up screwing around on the internet (on my computer instead of my phone for the first time all day!) or eating lunch (sometimes feeding my daughter makes it too crazy for me to eat simultaneouy with her).
- 3:00. Daughter wakes up. Play more, run more errands, try to avoid more TV. Maybe prep dinner if wife isn't cooking. Sometimes wife is home by 3:00, and I get some more precious moments to myself.
-5:00. Pick up son from after-school care on Wednesdays and Fridays. On Mondays, then take to extra Kung Fu lessons.
-6:00 Pick up son from Kung Fu lessons at his after school care on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
-Dinner happens at either 5:30 or 6:30 depending on the day.
-Immediately after dinner, my wife and I split duties: one of us cleans up the horrific mess left by the kids and dinner prep, the other takes the kids and gives them a bath. Clean up and doing the dishes usually takes an hour at least. By then it's usually time to get the kids ready for bed. Sometimes they'll have a little time to play, but not much.
-8:00. It usually takes some wailing and gnashing of teeth, but we try to get the kids to bed at 8:00. Again, we split duties, with one of us taking each kid.
-8:15-9:00. Finish cleanup if unable to do so before kids' bedtime. This is when I usually take a daily shower. Let me just repeat that: I don't get a chance to take a friggin' shower til almost 9:00 PM.
-9:15-9:30 by this time my shower is finally done, and I actually begin to relax for the first time all day. If my wife hasn't already gotten in bed, we finally get some alone time. We finally get a chance to watch movies/read/talk/have sex/play videogames etc. When my mother-in-law is staying with us, my wife and I try to go jogging after we put the kids to bed. Usually we're both too tired to do very much of any of these activities.
-10:00-11:00. Usually go to sleep sometime in this window. Last night I was up past midnight, and I'm paying the price.

A few things:
I don't think I can really convey the utter chaos and stress of mornings and the dinner/bath/bed/cleanup express. It's so goddamn exhausting.

Still, I have no boss and no office politics to deal with, so I guess it balances somewhat. On the other hand, I can go days without talking to other adults other than my wife or mother-in-law, and it can start to feel like house arrest.

Your turn.

In all honesty, I admire all of you people who can make the whole 'raising a child' thing work.

Brad, you forget pseudo internet outrage for upcoming releases (movie or video games).
Holy shit. Man at home!

I was taling about the subject, and if me or the wife had the luxury of having a sufficient income, we would do that in an instant.

As for my schedule, it's really kinda similar, but we have one baby and a dog, but we work, so it's crammed up until 8-8h30. After which is we have some us-time, but I watch less movies than before, as we drop sleeping after 10 or 11, so we instead watch a lot of TV series. The 40-60minutes format really is perfect for us right now. I guess that's gonna change after baby #2....

And Eyeball, the son is doing Kung Fu? Nice! What style?

My day is so different from one day to the next even as a (mostly) stay at home dad. It starts at the same time (7) every day with Miss K waking us up either by calling to us or climbing in to bed. After that it could be the zoo (yearly passes rock), Urban Treehouse, grocery shopping, walks to the park, go to the airport or just screw around at the mall.

She naps from 1 until between 3 and 4 which is when I write, surf the net or network. Mrs H gets home at 5. We eat, play with K, and then bed and bath at 8. We usually finish with TV or if we're still awake a movie.

Weekends are just stupid crazy so I won't even get in to that.

My daily routine looks like this:

Mostly because of my ADHD tendencies. But also, I am really into a lot of different things with regards to work. In general:

6am - up, getting ready for work
6:30am - lobbing hand grenades into the kids rooms to get them up
6:45am - leave to catch bus for work
6:45-8:00am - commute to work, where I am a blackberry-using internet surfing emailing douchenozzle
8am - 4pm - WORK; every day is a new fight sir.
4pm - 5:20pm - commute home - reading/organizing/douchenozzling
5:30pm-1am - pitting children against one another, making supper, doing freelance, playing games, occasionally going out with the missus, occasionally going out with friends
1am - sleep

5 hours a sleep a night seems to be ok for me. I know it's not healthy, but I survive and meet all of the expectations I have.

That is the weekday schedule.. Weekends:

Friday 5:30pm to Sunday 1am - Space! Madness!

As the wife and I take it in turns to get up first for this exersize I am assuming i lost the battle (which happens a lot.)

6:50 - alarm goes off
7:10 - actually get up and grab a shower
7:20 - make lunch for the day, eat breakfast, feed cats.
8:20 - leave the house, drive to work. Give the wife the car keys so she can go to her workplace (we commute in together it's cheaper that way).
8:45 - 9:30 screw around on the internet till I actually have to work, drink a couple of cups of coffee.
9:30 -1pm work (or at least pretend to0
1 -2pm lunch, i normally go for a walk after eating just to get out of the office.
2- 6pm work or at least pretend to
6pm go home. Wife unit (thanks judas!) makes dinner while do stuff like take out rubbish and clean cat litter.
6:30 eat diner, watch something we have recorded on the TV.
7:30 - 8ish convince the wife she wants to watch a crime drama or something so i can sneak in some xbox time. Or, watch a movie together if I have done that a lot already.
10pm bed.
Working parent, so that means that I'm spoken for from 5:30am until around 7:30-8:00pm (work, kid time, cooking, cleaning, etc). After that, I like to make a big deal about how exhausted I am, start drinking, and fall asleep less than an hour later.

8.30am - Up
9.15am - Get to the office

5:30 AM - Get up, feed the cat, make the bed, scoop the litterbox, take out the trash, shower, get dressed, bag up breakfast and lunch together for the day.
6:50 AM - Ride subway to work, which involves either napping, listening to my iPod or reading.
8:00 AM - Sit around at work. The usual.
5:30 PM - Run the hell out of that office like they just sprang Charles Manson from jail and hid him in my cubicle.
5:50 PM - Subway again. More reading, music and napping. Rinse, lather, repeat.
6:30 PM - Home. Change into comfies, feed the cat, get myself some dinner, do anywhere from zero to 600 crunches, depending on how disciplined I feel, watch some TV, catch up online.
9:30 PM - Call the boyfriend to chit chat for about 30 minutes before he has to clock in at work.
Somewhere around 11:00 PM to 11:30 PM - Wash face, brush teeth, head to bed.

6:30am: get up, shower, dress, eat.
7:20am: go to work.
8:00am: arrive at work, shaking fist in the air at the god of traffic.
11:00am: eat lunch at my desk, usually working through it.
4:30pm: another working day has ended...only the rush hour hell to face.
5:30pm: get home

Here, it varies.
- Every other Monday: Masonic Lodge meeting from 6pm until around 10:30pm (with dinner).
- Every other Wednesday: OES Chapeter meeting from 6:30pm until around 10:00pm (usually, no dinner)

otherwise:
6:15pm: go to the gym
8:00pm: dinner
10:30pm: go to bed.

Weekends are a free-for-all.

It's pretty much fast cars, hookers and blow 24/7 for me.

Or 58 hour work weeks with a two hour plus commute and getting home so tired that I can only play videogames or watch a movie before sleeping four hours and starting all over again.

It's one or the other, I don't really remember.

I feel like a lazy fuck. Being unemployed I sometimes don't get up till about 10am.

I still try to keep a schedule to keep me motivated.
I wish I was unemployed. Taking a 50% pay cut so I can have all day to myself seems like a better and better proposition every day.

I have 3 kids. The oldest is in first grade. My day is a lot like Eyeball Kid's but with a little home work mixed in and work for me. (My wife works 4 days a week too.) Plus there's 3 times as many kid baths.

The other day my sister pointed out that in a perfect scenario, we have 70 socks per week in the laundry. We have more than our share of chaos.

Wake Up.
Lay in bed wishing to God I didn't have to get out of it.
Get Out.
Shower.
Get Dressed.
Stop for some glorious WaWa Coffee.
Go to work.
9 Hours of Anarchy and screwing around on the net.
Drive Home.
Eat and Maybe Shower.
Watch TV/Screw around online. Occasionally their cousin video games join the party.
Sleep.

7:30AM - get up and get ready for work (make breakfast smoothie/toast to go)
8:30AM - Noon - Zombie out in front of my work PC

1PM - 5PM - Go grind it out in the salt mines
5PM - 5:30PM - drive home (10 mins) and change into my workout attire
5:30PM - 6:30PM - workout... usually P90X videos in my home gym
6:30PM - 7:30PM - With wife, prep and eat dinner or go out
7:30PM - Midnight - usually get stuff done around the house or marathon How I Met Your Mother; watch a movie; go see friends, etc...
Well, how to start.... At the stroke of midnight and the start of a new day, I'm usually awake already. I stay up late. So I guess I'll begin this with how I wake up:

I usually sleep pretty fitfully and wake often, but what I'll lay out here today is a schedule based upon perfect sleep and an average day at work

8: 27 am My alarm goes off. My alarm is the "strum" sound on my iPod. I then put on "PAPER PLANES" by MIA till I have the energy to emerge from the covers. Sometimes though if I'm in an extra rush for whatever reason, I'll jump out of bed the exact second I wake up, because even a slight delay will make it all the more difficult to get up later on
8:35 am I walk to the shower
8: 35-36 am, I arrive at the shower and enter it
8: 35 -9:20am, I shower and finish up the rest of my morning routine. I also do as much stuff in there as possible, including brushing my teeth. This saves time and the environment, and right now it's really cold out and leaving the hot shower once you get it in is unpleasant, to say the least.
9: 20, I collect up any Netflix or DVDs I need to return for the day, and clean up anything I left messy from the night before
9: 30am Take my cellphone and iPod from their chargers
9: 32 amI get dressed
9: 40 amI head to the car
9:40-50am If it's summer time, I stick my head out the window of the car to dry my hair. This time of year I need a hair dryer though, it sucks
9: 50 amI get to work, where I proceed to do the stuff that needs to be immediately done, and then move on to my Internet routine
10: 15am I commence my Internet Routine
1) Go to Huffpo. Read all stories of interest on the main page. Then all stories of interest on the Politics tab and the Entertainment tab
2) Go to Chud. Post in any threads I'd previously been active in that have updated since I last was on
3) Read the new stories on Chud
4) Comment on those

1:00 PM After lunch, read the rest of the tabs on Huffpo. I do not eat any food on my break, instead using the free time to surf the Internet

Throughout the day I check Chud for any updates or bumped thread, and try to stay on top of any active discussion I'd like to engage in with other members of the Chud-munity

5:00 PM, start shutting stuff down at my job
5: 20 PM lock the doors at my job
5: 30 pm , leave.
5: 42 PM, go shopping for food, pick up my netflix from my Mom's house. Sometimes I'll stay there for a bit to surf the web or download stuff to my iPod
6: 30 PM, arrive at my house.
6:32 PM, sign online
6 40 PM, check chud, see what happened since I left work, turn on MSNBC in the background
7 pm, Curl up in bed and chill out, watch whatever I had lined up from netflix for that evening. I often pause what I'm watching to go do other stuff like call friends or do some poeming, ETC
9-10PM, if my xbox is working I'll play some games, and if I'm at my mom's house I go on live
11 PM, Dinner time! My only nutrition of the day. I like to put on movies while I eat. JFK or NIXON being particular meal time favorites. Around this hour I commence food prep.

1:30 am, food is ready to eat. I then consume it.

2-3 AM, go to sleep

Now, there are many factors that can change this schedule. I could start work at a different time. I could hang out with friends after, before, or even during work. However, the schedule I just laid out represents an average "boring" day in my life. If I think of anything else that needs to go on there, I'll put it there.

Monday - Friday:

5:45 AM - Jen and I get up (sometimes with help from our cats), she heads downstairs to make our lunches, I'm brushing my teeth, showering, take a shammy to my rapidly balding head 'til it shines.

6:20 - Crack open the front door, get a vibe as to what the weather's like as well as a good view of the local church (got all renovated recently - looks awesome all lit up). Have my breakfast, watch some TV (today I caught some of Carpenter's The Thing! SCORE!).

6:50 - out the door and off to Pennsylvania to work (crossing state lines - the commutes sucks, but the tax refund I get each year more than assuages the pain!).

7:40 AM - 5:00 PM - Work, work, work.

5:01 - 5:45 - the lovely commute home (SEE! The beauty of Downtown Trenton! BASK! in the glory of I-95! BREATHE IN THE HEADY FUMES of the local power plants and clouds of car exhaust! THRILL! At the stunning traffic jam conga lines!).

5:45 - 6:30 - Dinner and chatting with Jen. Every couple of weeks we go out to dinner or hit the mall or something.

6:30 Depending on the day, I'm either surfing the web, or Jen and I hit the gym for an hour. Gym days means I hit the web an hour or so later, while Jen collapses on the couch and watches TV or entertains the cats.

9:00 - hang out with Jen for a bit, watch some TV

10:30 - 11:00 - Bedtime.

Weekends are usually up in the air - Jen and I will do some house cleaning, visit friends, run errands, shop, sacrifice some screaming victims to Cthulhu, etc. Yeah, living that James Bond lifestyle, that's me!

My work hours are all wacky - I'm contracted 11-3 weekdays but I take as much overtime as I can get. This is a fairly average day:

5am: Wake up, stay in bed
8.30am: Finally make myself get up, shower and (usually) wash hair, get breakfast and check internet while eating. Apply a fuckton of makeup and do something with my hair.
10.15am: Leave the house to get the bus. Usually end up running like a crazy person to catch it. My mum usually calls to talk to me on the way to work for about 20mins. Conversation varies between the weather and general chit chat to huge epic fucking arguments about god.
11am: Start work, usually on the main tills, but sometimes the fun variety of ~picking things off the floor~ because our customers are a tidy bunch.
3pm: Finish. If there's no overtime I go straight home, but usually I either get one or two hours before starting my second shift. If I'm staying in town I buy a lot of greasy fast food and sit at work reading, or I do a bit of shopping.
4pm or 5pm: Start work again, usually tidying up until closing time and if I'm working late then I'll be putting stock out.
6pm or 9pm: Couple of nights a week, game society with my boyfriend and his/our friends. All the other days, home.
10pm onwards: Films, video games, food, vicious arguments about a) Polanski, b) Disney, c) Marriage or d) All of the above.
Midnight: Bed

On my days off? There is no routine. I sleep until about 4pm, shamble around in pyjamas eating whatever comes into my path and then am in bed again by about 11. Seeing as I take either 1 or 2 days off every 2 weeks, I need my sleep.

I have no daily routine. It changes depending upon the job I'm doing at the moment, or whether I'm working that day.

At the moment, it's this:

0530: Up. Breakfast. News. Internet check.
0745: Class
1600: Exercise
1800: Cook and eat.
1900: Study and internet and World Series.
2130: Sleep.

This is disappointing Frank. I expecting something more like:

0530: Up. Breakfast (Green Berets on the menu).
0745: Class (diffusing landmines using your teeth on Monday)
1200: Terrorist hunting using your private F-15
1800: Writing a thesis on the application of stable isotope tracers (15N) to study denitrification and other processes in the nitrogen cycle.
1900: Wrestling with a pack of wolves.
2130: Sleep (or is it?)

Martin beat me to it! I was expecting something far more exotic and life-threatening from Cobretti!

6:00 am: Get out of bed, scratch ass, head to bathroom. Brush teeth, put in contacts, shower, dress.
6:25 am: Wake wife, make bed while she strips off nightgown and walks naked to bathroom. Get boner.
6:30 am: Feed & water cat, scoop box, start my coffee (Keurigs rule!) and breakfast.
6:45 am: Wake son, work on wife's breakfast and lunches for the family.
7:15 am: Kiss wife goodbye and tell her I love her as she heads off to work. Throw ball for cat and watch 25 minutes of Sportscenter with son.
7:40 am: Leave house, drop son at school, tell him to work hard, not to be a jackass and that I love him, then head to work.
7:50 am - 1:00 pm: Paperwork, phonework, deal with others bullshitwork.
1:00 - 2:00 pm: Lunch, CHUD, espn.com. (Had early potluck lunch today.)
2:00 - 4:30 pm: Rehashing of previous work, hope for salesmen to make deals. Leave for day.
4:40 pm: Arrive home. Greeted by wife (with a kiss), son (with a hug) and cat (with a purr & a headbutt to my shin).
4:45 - 5:30 pm: Change clothes, visit with each other about the day. (From now until March, three days a week this will also have make/eat supper, go to high school to announce basketball games).
5:30 - 6:30 pm: Supper, dishes, iron clothes for next day.
6:30 - 9:00 pm: Relaxation. Read, watch tv, Xbox, board games or cards, music, putter around in the garage, whatever suits the mood.
9:00 pm: Son goes to bed.
9:15 - 11:00 pm: Prime time with wife.
11:00 - 11:30 pm: Catch up with scores on ESPNews, then bed.

Weekends are either wildly busy or wonderfully relaxing, depending on what's going on with family or friends, but far from routine. Except for golf in the early morning with my son and my Dad every Sunday from April 1 to October 31.

Can you carefully explain this to my 18 months son, because he sure doesn't seem to give a shit so far. Thanks.

From the army onwards I don't think there's been a time when I didn't have to wake up at six or earlier. For a year I even had to wake up at 04:00. Now waking up early is ingrained in me. Even on my vacation I have to be either drunk out of my mind or completely exhausted to be able to sleep past 08:30.
I normally get up around 7:30 or so to get to work, have lunch around 11:15. It's a 30 minute lunch, then it's back to work until 4:30 when I get out. Then after that my day can go from meeting up with my girlfriend for dinner, to just coming home. Either way I end up back home watching movies or reading a book from the piles that I've accumulated over the past few years.

Today is the exception since the football team has an away game, and it's pretty far so we had a movie day and I came back home at 1:30.

Why do I get the feeling there are reams of spiral bound Charlie Babbitt notebooks in your life?

I don't know what that means, sorry Tzu. If you're talking about journals, I don't keep them. I have nerve damage in my right hand and writing anything in longhand is very painful for me

I'm unemployed so it goes something like this:

9:30AM: Tigeroovy's alarm goes off, we hit the snooze button several times

10:00AM: He actually gets out of bed and takes a shower, I either stay in bed in a semi-conscious state or get up and put on music

10:30AM: He leaves for work, I make myself coffee and go on the internet for a bit

11:00AM - 2:00PM: I look for work, get depressed that there still aren't any film jobs in Vancouver, grumble about how poor I am

2:00PM - 7:00PM: I clean the house, eat something, go on the internet, work on my script rewrite and/or play guitar, grumble more about how I wish I was still employed

7:00PM - 3:00AM: Tiger gets home from work, grumbles about his job. I grumble about how I wish I had a job. We hang out, eat dinner, watch TV or movies, occasionally hang out with friends or go out somewhere when we can afford it. I usually do some weight training and crunches and squats and stuff at some point too

3:00AM: We go to bed

What a thrilling life I have these days...

6-8 AM: Wake up to blindingly hot Florida sun baking me through my car window.

6-8 AM: Drive to Mobile to fill 52 ounce mug with cappucino and espresso shots.

6:15-8:15 AM: Head to library for open WIFI and free power outlets; check email and facebook and whatnot.

10 AM: Enter library and make use of the facilities. Wait for the rare service call for PC repair business.

12 Noon-1 PM: Eat whatever previous day's dumpster dive yielded.

5 PM: Drive to Einstein Brothers Bagel dumpster and see what's for dinner.

5:15 PM: Return to library or racketball on Thursdays.

7-9 PM (money permitting): Pick up an 8-pack of 16 ounce Miller High Life.

Somewhere from 8 AM-9 PM (if I'm lucky): Tune up and/or fix people's PCs for anywhere from $15 to $55 per hour.

8-9 PM: Shower at beach.

9 PM: Head to one of many locations with free WIFI and download shit while browsing the web.

11 PM-12 Midnight: Drive to one of a few secure locations to blissfully sleep reclined in the driver's seat of my '96 Ford Taurus station wagon.

Beat that.
