Something that took me a few years to catch on to and I don't know if any of you that teach are aware but even if you are an adjunct you are entitled to a faculty ID if you haven't picked one up.
Said college ID nets you student prices at the cinema in case you didn't know.
Also, even if you are only an adjunct you are still a "teacher" in the sense of discounts that businesses give to educators. I receive 19% off my Verizon bill for being employed at the Tech school I teach at.
*EDIT* And to add to geek references, I utilize Evil Dead II and The Chronicles of Riddick for helping students remember -necrosis means tissue death. I am constantly throwing in Seinfeld references, most notably the monologue about the "man with his head turned to the side and a tube, lightning attacking his body; this is how medicine views the human body." I also use the one about nose jobs when teaching them rhin/o means nose.
When we talk about spinal cord injuries I bring up and recommend they all rent Murderball. Three Kings is mentioned in the chapter on the respiratory system for collapsed lungs. House, M.D. is brought up quite a bit, especially when we talk about lupus.
I even throw in Anthony Hopkins' line from Bram Stoker's Dracula, "The very name 'venereal diseases', the 'diseases of Venus', imputes to them divine origin." when covering STD's.
I'm sure there are more but that is off the top of my head. Most just flow in the lecture.
*EDIT #2* Also, not sure how your bookstores work but faculty can usually purchase software for insane prices. Windows 7 Professional for $5.95 anyone? Also check into whether or not they have an Employee Pricing Plan with any retailers. I get 7% off anything from Dell. It's basically sales tax around here but if any of my friends want to save anything north of sixty bucks they have me order stuff for them, I put it on my business card and get the mileage points for it.
