Teachers - Page 2

Regarding geeky references, I've definitely used my fair share. Some from last year have included World War Z and Adult Swim references. Usually at least a few students get them and make little comments or draw pictured on the sides of the test.

Something that took me a few years to catch on to and I don't know if any of you that teach are aware but even if you are an adjunct you are entitled to a faculty ID if you haven't picked one up.

Said college ID nets you student prices at the cinema in case you didn't know.

Also, even if you are only an adjunct you are still a "teacher" in the sense of discounts that businesses give to educators. I receive 19% off my Verizon bill for being employed at the Tech school I teach at.

*EDIT* And to add to geek references, I utilize Evil Dead II and The Chronicles of Riddick for helping students remember -necrosis means tissue death. I am constantly throwing in Seinfeld references, most notably the monologue about the "man with his head turned to the side and a tube, lightning attacking his body; this is how medicine views the human body." I also use the one about nose jobs when teaching them rhin/o means nose.

When we talk about spinal cord injuries I bring up and recommend they all rent Murderball. Three Kings is mentioned in the chapter on the respiratory system for collapsed lungs. House, M.D. is brought up quite a bit, especially when we talk about lupus.

I even throw in Anthony Hopkins' line from Bram Stoker's Dracula, "The very name 'venereal diseases', the 'diseases of Venus', imputes to them divine origin." when covering STD's.

I'm sure there are more but that is off the top of my head. Most just flow in the lecture.

*EDIT #2* Also, not sure how your bookstores work but faculty can usually purchase software for insane prices. Windows 7 Professional for $5.95 anyone? Also check into whether or not they have an Employee Pricing Plan with any retailers. I get 7% off anything from Dell. It's basically sales tax around here but if any of my friends want to save anything north of sixty bucks they have me order stuff for them, I put it on my business card and get the mileage points for it.

For a seminar about senescence I used Anton Chigurh and The Seventh Seal among other things. The Simpsons always work too.

What?

I get like a 20% discount off my bill from AT&T for being an educator. Definitely helps out.

For those interested, the wife and I are indeed still together. The cocktopus wasn't enough to sway her...yet.

Working at a community college, I only have a Masters Degree in English Literature. Before I started here I had zero experience teaching, and my first term was a bit rough for that. Eventually, though, it's all about confidence and my bosses are pretty cool about our teaching methods as long as we follow the syllabus and text.

I've used clips from Clerks, SLC Punk, Chris Rock: Bring the Pain in class, and did an analysis of The Giving Tree. Once they got over the cussing (hey, we're all over 18) they got into it.

Just go to your local cellular store with your faculty ID and they will add it to your account.

Do you find that students get offended if you swear in class? I swear a lot (the military does this to you after awhile), so I am wondering how much I will have to tone stuff down when teaching in January, if at all...

Today we read an article about illegal music downloading and how it affects the music industry, and I said "fuck Hannah Montana" when someone brought up how bands make money on merchandising.

People laughed.

I'd say it would depend on what area of the country you are in. Here in the south I try to keep my language in check for three reasons. One, being the generally genteel nature of society. Second, I am teaching mostly women. Third is really the most important one for me, it just isn't professional.

For everyone already teaching, how many of you have been rated?

Somebody actually brought that up in class, and I learned that I am not on ratemyprofessors.com yet. The simple fact, however, that it was brought up will probably make someone add me.

Good lord, so many movie/TV references flow in my lectures that I never realized it.

Face/Off for otoplasty, surgical repair of the ear.

Another Seinfeld reference to the Junior Mint episode about leaving things inside patients.

Darkman for 3rd degree burns.

-rrhagia means bursting forth. The Incredible Hulk comes up for that one.

Just an update on my certification. This past December I got the second half of it done, so I am a fully certified educator now! Got about 3 weeks and a few days left, and then summer!

So realistically, what kind of job can the ParaPro get me? I took that a few years back just as kind of a back-up of sorts.

This is my third year of teaching. I teach high school English, mostly 9th, 10th, and 11th graders. I am way too close in age to be teaching Seniors. For me, the job is fantastic. I work in a southern light suburban/rural town. My degree is in English with two concentrations: Literature and Technical Writing. I also have a master's in Education. I worked as an HR manager for four years while finishing my two degrees up.

For me, teaching was the easy part. The administrative is what is killing me. The system is broken because the people running the system allow it to stay broken. I am now the department head (My department was so contentious, they gave it to a guy with 2 years experience). A business that ran the way most schools run would have gone under years ago.

As for college, I am looking at teaching there eventually, or as a dual-enrollment Senior English/Comp 1 and 2 course. Around here, the local community colleges require you to have a masters and 18 credit hours in your field. I could teach college English if I had 18 hours of English courses, but I don't.

Nine hours later and I have a Google Voice phone number. Not sure what I am going to do with it though.

You can have it take over your Android cell phone voice mail and then you'll have free visual voice mail...

So yes, as I expected. Was quite an ego boost to see long-time subs and assistants failing their 5th try when I aced my first though(I have never felt like an asshole so much for doing nothing in my life).

Of course, I can do nothing with it?

I am not a teacher, but it's what I want to do. Admittedly I've got a long road to travel before getting there. I want to teach at a college/university level. Administration difficulties aside, I don't think I'd do well with high school age students, so I'm planning on going on to get my Master's.

In the field I'm wanting to teach (theatre/musical theatre) an MFA is the terminal degree, so I don't have to get PhD to teach as I would most likely need to if I were getting a Master's of Music.

Can you teach above freshman level with a Masters of Music? With my MA in English I'm stuck teaching comp classes.

I'm proud that I made a class of seventeen year olds laugh by just recounting the plot of Breaking Dawn without actually adding any jokes. Gives you hope, you know?
A Master's of Music is different than the MFA that I'll be going for because a Master's of Music has a doctorate that can follow. Because with an MFA in theatre, musical theatre or directing, the MFA is the terminal degree. It's the highest you can get in that field, so I can teach at any level. However, I have considered what getting a doctorate in philosophy could do for my career. But that would be far down the road.

Rock on. Now that many of them know you know the book/film you can get right down to bedding a few of them, no?
