You Need To Be Watching COMMUNITY

dugg
I still have to catch it.
May have to give this another chance. I watched the "Spanish 101" episode, and aside from the Ken Jeong scenes, didn't think it was that good. It had a weird pacing that seemed to kill the comedy.
I saw the pilot, and liked it a lot, but I'm disposed to like anything McHale does.

Unfortunately, NBC has decided to put it directly against Survivor, and I don't have TiVO or DVR...so Community loses. I might try to catch some online, if they're there.
Community is easily the best comedy on Tv. Why would anyone still watch Survivor?
Well the show has been a little hit or miss but the last episode really was perfect.
Easily best new show of the season. The first two episodes are good, but slow, as they needed to establish the plot and characters. The last few episodes have been fried gold. Seriously, some of the funniest shit on TV right now. And the post credits bits kill. I never thought I'd think Chevy Chase would be funny again, but he's been shining each episode, culminating in the glorious Halloween ep. It's funny you made the AD comparison, Dev, because I made the same one last week while telling my friends about this show.
The more I watch this show the more McHale's character seems like he'd be right at home in the Arrested Development universe.
Thursday night is the nexus of all tv shows I like to watch: "The Office", "30 Rock", "Parks and Recreation" (which I think is criminally underrated), "It's Always Sunny", "Supernatural" and "Survivor". That being said, I've been surprised to find myself almost looking forward to "Community" more than any of those other shows. It's that good.
That tips it.

Going to check this out on Devin's recommendation. I'm just so skiddish about TV shows. Especially when comparisons to Arrested Development start to pop up. I can't fucking mention that classic and nigh unbeatable comedy show without people going "oooooh, have you seen "It's Always Sunny..." yet? It's BETTER than AD."

No offense to those who like it, but my god, I cannot stand that show ("Sunny") or really understand the love it gets. /hatetangent

Very glad to hear that there's a glimmer of hope for Chevy Chase being funny again.
This show had me at "This is a color wheel; it goes from Seal, to Seal's teeth."
I agree with Diva that this is the best new show this season. The rest of Thursday night is good also, and then there is Modern Family and The Middle.

I usually watch Thursday comedies on Friday after work on Hulu. I always leave Community for last, knowing that it'll leave me happy.
I've been loving this show since the pilot aired; it was a tad shaky but showed a lot of promise that could be realized if I just gave it a chance, and weeks later I'm still watching it, faith rewarded. The last episode in particular totally killed me; Glover and Pudi are always great together but their dual-Batman voices at the end were just perfect.
GOD, I hope this show doesn't get cancelled. That scene where Chevy Chase is trying to write the school song for Alison Brie's character is the funniest he's been in DECADES. Also, Danny Pudi is a genius.

This is all.

Does Not Compute.
Community is in fact awesome, and has greatly improved itself since the pilot (like most great shows do, look at Seinfeld's pilot).
COMMUNITY is the fourth funniest show NBC airs on Thursday night. (It does, at least, rank higher than Leno.)

No offense taken. I love Sunny, but I can easily see that it might not work for everybody. Hell, if I'm not in the right mood, it doesn't even work for me sometimes.

And Community is fucking great.
Great show. Missed the first two episodes, but the third hooked me.
But I was under the impression it was doing pretty well actually. They've gone for a full season order and it's NBC's top-rated half hour non-sports show (is that too many qualifiers to count as good news?).
So I'm at work and can't really check...

is the whole season (so far) available on Hulu?

*in its time period.

I agree. I've kept watching to give it a chance, cause it seemed like it had potential, and I feel I was finally rewarded by the Halloween episode. Chevy's performance is a good indicator, as I'd found him very hit or miss in previous episodes. But his drugged out Beastmaster was genius; the first time I've really laughed at Chevy Chase since CHRISTMAS VACATION.

Btw - PARKS AND RECREATION has had one of the biggest season-to-season improvements I've ever seen. Last season was frankly shit. This season it's better than THE OFFICE.
Interesting to hear. I dropped Parks from my TV viewing halfway through last season. Maybe I'll pick it back up.
Yeah, my Thursday order is now The Office, 30 Rock, P&R and then Community. I like to save the best for last.
Caught the first episode based on the fact that Joel McHale is awesome. Unfortunately it was barely entertaining at all, and I couldn't get up the motivation to watch the 2nd episode based on that. With the comparisons to Arrested Development, I'll flat out give it a pass as that was another highly praised show that didn't entertain me.
The best show on TV.

Not the best comedy, either. The best show.
hmm. I've been watching it, and enjoying it okay, but it's probably the first show I'd drop if I had to drop anything. I don't watch much TV, but out of the stuff I do watch, comedies such as 30Rock and It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia are much, much better and funnier than Community. Then there are the dramas such as Mad Men and Friday Night Lights which just crush it. Anyways, it's not without it's charms, but it's not nearly up to the level that Devin and the above posters claim it is.
Word.
I wouldn't say Community makes me laugh out loud as much as The Office or 30 Rock, but it's definitely solid. I'm on board.

Survivor is still on? How can this show (or reality tv in general) still be remotely entertaining?
Amen, Devin! I've been watching Office/30 Rock faithfully the last 2 years (caught all the way up on DVDs for both shows), and Community has the goods to be better than either of them (well, maybe not 30 Rock at its best), given enough time. Fantastic casts & great scripts every single week. Plus, I squeal like a girly girl every time John Oliver shows up (not a crush, just a big Daily Show fan).
The Office dropped off my Must See TV list long ago. I'm glad 30 Rock is back, but Community has consistently gotten me to run home and watch it live these days. I look forward to it and Modern Family more than the returning shows (save for Sunny; honestly, I can't fathom anyone not liking that show).
PARKS AND REC did have the biggest season-to-season improvement I've ever seen. I love that show, but COMMUNITY is the funniest thing on TV right now.

*Check out the Beauty Pageant ep of PARKS AND REC on Hulu if you're on the fence about giving it another shot.
See, I saw part of the beauty pageant ep of Parks & Rec. and still...nothing. It's not a terrible show, but it just doesn't grab me. It still feels like it's trying too hard to be Office 2.0, and I'm already watching The Office & don't need 2 such shows. Or maybe I'm not a big Amy Poehler fan. Who knows.

This kind of hyperbole would be considered excessive even if LOST had already ended its run.

Seven episodes of COMMUNITY have aired. About two of them have been good. About two more have been so-so.
Its really good. It makes me chuckle out loud and that's just fine. But best on TV? Its only had seven episodes, and a couple of them have been less then stellar. With quality stuff like Mad Men out there, lets tap the brakes just a tad, shall we?
I'm with Bateman that Community is the funniest thing on TV right now*. And I'm kind of amazed at how many people are saying that the show has had 1-2 good episodes and the rest have been mediocre. I think they've all been great, but even if it isn't your cup of tea, they've struck me as very consistent in terms of laughs and material. In any case, comedies usually take some time finding their feet, and Community has had a stronger start than any I can think of in recent years, except maybe 30 Rock.

*although this could change in a single week if 30 Rock pops back up from its mini-rut or Always Sunny comes up with some really original material.
Curb then Sunny then who cares.

LOST isn't on TV right now, dude.

ETA: Also, which episodes weren't stellar? The pilot was pretty good and the rest have been badass.

Yeah, the idea that there have been so-so episodes is silly. Each has been very, very strong. The jokes have been consistently smart and the characters are well formed right from the start. If this is the show in its growing phase, I can't wait to see season 2.

That's an optimistic statement right there.

Tell me which episode was just okay and I'll tell you why you're wrong.

By most anyone's definition, when you declare something to be "the best show on TV," you're putting it up against any "living" show currently airing or in production. I have no idea where you draw your line. Do FRINGE or HOUSE not count because they're not airing right now thanks to the World Series?

And just for shits and giggles: The episode with the social experiment and the hacky sack guy was all-around terrible. Predictable at every turn with very few laughs to be found.

Oh, and why must every episode of COMMUNITY end with some tacked-on, bullshit, "hey, we all learned something today" happy ending?

Because they're in college. Duh.

Ha! The same thing, but the original post was a little ... awkwardly phrased.

I think we both learned a valuable lesson today.
Okay, name something they learned that was sappy, overly sentimental, or tonally wrong for the show.

That listening to dancing skeletons while tripping on E and coming to Joel McHale for advice is a decidely bad idea.

Just sappy.
