Battle Royale US remake

Are there any talks going on to do such a thing? I'd love to see one. Don't know who could direct it though. Maybe Verhoeven...
I haven't heard of any plans. I can only assume that, seeing as no American distributors were brave enough to even pick up the original film, that the subject matter and overall story are just too morally dangerous for any studio to serious consider doing a remake. The modern (and long-standing) political climate, along with national tragedies like Columbine will probably continue to make the notion impossible.

I love the original film and find its message positive and important, but the fact is that all of the elements involved in the story are studio suicide.

A US version of BATTLE ROYALE is senseless. The film is close to perfect. And the themes are inherantly Japanese, especially if you have read the book.

I think they can get over the "sensitive climate" thing as long as they pitch the movie to studios in the right way.

Never ever going to happen. Unless Running Man becomes a real TV show. Then maybe.

A Running Man TV show isn't far off. All they (and by "they" I mean FOX) need to do is find some state where there's a legal loophole allowing contestants to be hunted down and killed as long as they sign the appropriate release form. Hosted by fucking Regis or someone.

Wishing a US BR remake upon the world is really fucked-up. I'm guessing anyone doing so has A)never seen the original, or B)is a demon set loose upon the earth to lower the standards even further.

Must be "B".

Well, since they went ahead and did a US Ring and most of the sheep lapped it up, I don't see why they can't remake Battle Royale with US talent. The original was pretty anticlimactic, not nearly as violent or outrageous as it had been hyped to be. But someone like Verhoeven could really take it OTT.
You know, the point of 'Battle Royale' that so many horror fans don't seem to get is that it's not a movie that's about violence for the sake of violence. The movie is important, like the Inspector said, because of it's message, the meaning behind it, and I'm sorry abut Verhoeven is one of the LAST people I would want to see anywhere near a remake, if God forbid it were to happen.

Gotta agree with Butane on this one: Verhoeven is high up on my "The Last Guy I'd Ever Want To See Remake This Movie" list. What in his filmography would make anyone think he'd be the right guy for this?

Verhoeven would be great because he's an expert at cartoonish megaviolence. Which is what this film should be chock full of, ideally.

I'd have to say Robocop and Starship Troopers (and if no one got the point of his starship troopers, then to hell with them).

although i agree he shouldn't direct a re-make cause one isn't needed.

Paul Verhoven is definitely one of my favorite directors - I love the extreme violence of his movies. However, the point of Battle Royale was not pointless violence. While I'm a big fan of Verhoven I have a feeling that he would just use a whole bunch of outrageous gore and shock and skip past most of the underlying issues of BR.

By the way, what is next on Verhoven's plate?

Yeah, evidently a lot of films go over my head. Why do I even bother posting here?

Verhoeven is able to do satirical things related to media and propaganda, though. That's one thing he does have in his favor. If he could play up the whole "televising" element shown in the opening scene, he could have something.

But, ya know, you're kinda right, he probably is indeed wrong to do it. In fact, now that I think of it, I'm not sure any other director, save for the minor possibility of Quentin Tarantino, could be able to pull off such a brilliant film as Battle Royale.

Goddamn I need to watch this movie again and soon. All this talk about it is getting me hungry for it. I would've shown it to some fellow teens that came over tonight, but, they probably wouldn't have understood it so I showed'em something else....maybe some other time, when there's less of the younger ones around.

As for a US remake.....no. I say, if we were to do anything over here, do our own BR film that's in the same universe, but its our own country doing it, to have different messages and social commentary that fits for our society.

And yes, the film is not about violence. It's about the message. Great flick.

I have a question and a comment:

I bought, and just watched, the PAL tin boxset which features the "alternate ending" .... Now, for those of you who have seen this great film, how does this ending ( the Tartan tin box ) differ from the other versions ???

... and my comment is that if I were to remake this film here in the US of A, I'd have Spike Lee or Sofia Coppola direct .... Cartoon violence would not work here, you need characterization and purpose, and someone who knows a little something about controversy and saddness ...

Battle Royale was brilliant except for the last 15 minutes, too conventional to my taste. But I seriously doubt that a US remake could make it any better.

As to Verhoeven's next project, you can check it at http://www.paulverhoeven.net , but I must admit it doesn't say much...

If this does happen, I'm there. I haven't seen the original and I probably won't because I can't stand dubbed or subtitled movies (I'm pretty sure it is, but not 100%).
Seriously, Angelus, how old are you? This is something you're really gonna have to get over.

I think an American version would have the potential to be great in it's own way, if they cast all those fresh-faced kids from 7th Heaven and stuff, maybe even throw a few pop stars in their. Come on, how cool would it be to see the girl from The Princess Diaries going after that Lizzie McGuire twit with a chainsaw?

A US remake? Fuck dat noize! I can see it now....it'd be the cast of Scooby Doo and I know What You Did Last Summer and of course the sure fire money maker rapper turned actor like DMX or Busta and Colin Ferrel stepping into Kitanos shoes. Oh boy, I'd pay double to see that one (sarcasm canbe a beautiful thing)

No, in my version the Kitano part will be a surprisingly dark turn by Tony Danza.

I actually picture Travolta doing really well in the "principal" role.
Travolta in Full Ham Mode could probably rival Riki Takeuchi in BR2, though.

Beats character was a teacher not a principle and Travolta would be awful as it.
well that makes all the difference. thanks for clearing that up, I can sleep better now.
