Felt (Murs and Slug)

Anyone else familiar with this project? I like Murs, and I just heard their "Protagonists" track from their A Tribute To Rosie Perez album courtesy of MissZooey's recommended Minnesota Public Radio stream. The track was pretty awesome - solid beats, great flow (of course, it's Murs), and pretty infectious.

Recommendations or commentary?

I liked their second album a bit more, mostly because I prefer Ant as a producer. That being said though, if you like Murs you should check out their first album since they had The Grouch (from Living Legends) doing the beats.

And taking that tangent further, the Grouch & Eligh album from a few months ago is quite good. Check it out!

I don't think I've ever actually listened to a FELT album, but I'm familiar with it, and I believe I own the Jim Mahfood comic book adaptation of the first volume. That was pretty cool. I might have to get this one... I am a Murs fan.

Felt Vol. 2 is a classic. Must own. Must download.

I love Felt. The new album is definitely growing on me. At first it was a little weird to hear them rapping over Aesop's beats, but the more I listen to it the more I dig it.

Pitchfork, being the snobs that they are gave it a 5.8. Funny thing is they actually were quoting Mur's lines and saying they were Slug's. I actually e-mailed them corrections to their review, and they updated them... ha!

Can't say how I would rank the new album yet, but I'm partial to the first one, maybe because of it's brevity, but Felt 2 is also pretty great.

I've only ever heard the first one but I love it. Slug is one of my favorite rappers. I'm gonna have to get the other ones.

Video for "Glory Burning" off Felt 3

While there is nothing ground breaking about this video, I find that it follows the story in the song quite accurately. Rappers are known for being storytellers but it's rare that the video actually matches the stroy rhyme for rhyme, beat for beat. Plus, I like how half way through the perspective changes a bit and makes you think differently about the first half.

Haven't heard the album in question but you guys know Slug/Atmosphere/Anticon are basically punchlines amongst real dudes right?

According to that link Aesop is part of Felt now? I really should get off my ass and check them out.

Their music isn't totally wack, but I just hate the attitudes of dudes like Aesop and Slug who trade in meaningless hyper-literate bullshit as a way to elevate their mediocre (white) music above the so-called "mainstream hip-hop" they hypocritically decry as "fake" or "inauthentic"; as well as the attitudes of their fans who canonize mediocre rappers as elite because they don't know (or don't care to know) the history of hip-hop and want to posture as realer than other dudes because they listen to shitty underground stuff instead of shitty mainstream stuff.

Felt is awesome. Love both Murs and Slug/Atmosphere. I've seen them both live numerous times over the last few years.

Not sure why I am bother responding to this, but at least they try to do something other than talk about how rich they are, how 'real' they are, and how fake other rappers are. If there is any takeaway message from the history of hip hop, it's about being creative and doing your own thing. Rappers like Aesop have much more in common with the originators of hip hop in that they are trying something new instead of following the formula of the artists that preceded them. Not that it should matter, but since you pulled out the 'white people don't understand' card, I am black.

EDIT: Apparently, Eli got banned so I win.

Has anyone seen MURS on his current tour? He's playing a small club here in Atlanta tomorrow night. I think I'll probably go check it out. Never seen him perform before.

I haven't gotten to see him, but the new album with 9th Wonder is pretty solid.
