I know we already somewhat discussed headscarves* here, but I noticed that a Facebook acquaintance (white British dude, if that matters) just joined a group called "Ban the Burqa".

What do you think? Poll's anonymous, but feel free to unmask (harrr) yourself herein for the sake of discussion.

*Also I wasn't sure whether to put this in Religion, Political Discourse or Culture, so I sort of closed my eyes and pointed at the screen. I opened my eyes and saw the Sex forum beneath my index finger, so I just decided to drop it here in Misc Culture.

And just to go ahead and respond, I'm torn on it. I'm automatically squeamish on any idea that tells women what they can and can't wear, but on the other hand the general oppressive cultural baggage related to the burqa suuuuucks.

Depends. If a woman is wearing it because the government (or her husband) will stone her if she doesn't, and that's the only reason she wears it, that's bullshit. If a woman is wearing it because that's how she honors her religion, and she wears it of her own free will, who am I to judge?

That would be "no" to a blanket ban, then.

That's the craziest thing you've ever posted.

Also, the pollmaker is the flawed one. I was running like five different WebTrends reports while trying to hack that out. I'm gonna go flagellate myself now.

I'm actually on your page. I'm all for individual autonomy to look and dress any way one wishes. Right until it puts an obstruction between me and boobs.

I picked "depends" as well. I'm also going to copy and paste Chris' post and cleverly pass it off as my own.

I have. I don't remember anything about burqas, but it's been a year or so.

Oh no wait sorry. It was his follow-up -- A Thousand Splendid Suns.

My bad.
