The Free Music Thread

I figure we could use a place to point each other toward good, legally free music we find online.

To start with, there are a couple of podcasts on iTunes which are quite good, both classical. One is finished, and is called "Classical Masterpieces | Deutsche Welle." It consists of 5 different symphonies from 5 great composers. I can't speak to the quality of the recordings or interpretations as well as some might, but the price is right, either way.

The other is called "The Concert." It's an ongoing series from the Gardner Museum in Boston. It's usually smaller pieces, but they are all recorded live and sound wonderful. Also cool are the historical notes at the beginning of each cast providing background on the piece that you're going to be listening to. A great resource for people who, like me, are looking to improve their classical acumen but just don't have the dollars to get into it as much as they like.

I totally agree with your recommendation of "The Concert" which is one of my favorites. I'll mention a couple more classical podcasts, but I'd love for some advice on other genres. Is there a good quality gamelan podcast I should be aware of?

Aspen Public Radio has three good classical podcasts available on itunes:

"Classical Music from Aspen" is mostly standard repertoire, played by modern ensembles.

"Opera in the Afternoon" is a selection of modern and historical opera recordings with a smattering of chatter by the host. Some of the episodes are entire operas (3 hours) performed by elite ensembles.

"Andrew Todd's Historic Pianists Series" seems to have finished up. But the archive is great. Each 2 hour episode features a single pianist from the 20th century (Cortot, Horowitz, Gould, etc.) in some of their greatest performances. These are among the greatest classical recordings ever made.

Anyone who doesn't subscribe to Coverville is missing out. The host often approaches Jeff Goldsmith levels of inanity, but the songs are great. There's usually at least a couple of gems I wind up listening to more than a couple of times.

I also have to throw some love to the rock concerts that NPR does, and the various "song of the day" podcasts out there.

Some good recommendations, but when possible, can we also get links for podcasts available outside of iTunes (for those of us on Steve Jobs' enemies list)?

I'm looking for rock podcasts and all I can find are Indie Rock ones. Any suggestions? I'd like some about classic rock and some about new music.
