Yeah, if you're not using a custom ROM the best you're going to get out of root access is the ability to uninstall any pre-installed bloatware.

Well, flashing my first ROM didn't work.  Tried CM7 but got stuck in a bootloop.  At the very least I was able to get back to my stock config with CWM and that assuaged some of my feelings of losing things.  Now to figure out what went wrong on the bootloop.

You can do it Tzu! I rooted and installed CM7 on a Hero, which is even older than the Incredible, and it's running pretty smoothly.

For whatever reason, I had the biggest issues with installing CM7 on both the Nookcolor and the Hero. I got stuck in a bootloop, reflashed the ROM a couple of times, and then it just fixed itself. Not sure why, but they're both doing okay now. Though I'm finding myself missing the NC's ereader features, so I might flash back to rooted stock rom for that one.

I ordered the Rezound last night, and it should be arriving by Wednesday. My husband also got the Rezound, daughter got the Bionic. Unlocked bootloader on the Rezound gave me new hope, and after playing with the Nexus AGAIN on Saturday, I realized that the screen really is a deal breaker for me.

I'll get a Nexus device in 2014. Not sure that Google tried their best here.

Would not wiping the phone data and cache have led me to the bootloop, Cocoa?

What I did after making the backup was:

1. Manually moved CM7 to sd card and renamed to update

2. Booted into CWM recovery

3. Applied update from sdcard

It did everything and then brought up the android and the arrow going in a circle for a few minutes then the logo went away, android skateboarded back up and it began the arrow circle thing again and then started doing all that again.

I definitely wiped my cache and data before installing the rom, so that definitely could have been the problem.

Honestly? Why don't you try ROM Manager from the market and see if that works better. When it asks you to back up and wipe, definitely do it.

ROM Manager wouldn't pull the ROM from Cyanogen.  It kept giving me a download error.

I don't understand what you mean by "wouldn't pull". It is on your sd card correct? When ROM manager asked if you wanted to install the ROM from the SD card, it wouldn't install Cyanogen?

Wouldn't download it from the list of ROMs.  After that I read a few threads saying that using ROM Manager wasn't all that good except for reflashing CWM.  I DLed CM7 on my computer and manually placed it on the SD.

Went on a bit of an Android game downloading spree recently. Picked up X-Men (Konami, arcade, 1992), Sonic CD, Siegecraft THD, NFL Pro 2012 HD, Reckless Racing, Shine Runner, and World of Goo. X-Men is pretty much the greatest thing on Android as far as I'm concerned.

Tzu that's weird, I've never heard anyone trashing ROM manager and I've used it nearly every single time I've needed to swap out a ROM. It's seamless, and I like that I can back up, wipe, and install without even turning off my phone.

So, did you ever get it up and running?

Dylan, I've actually been on an Android app spree myself. I'm not sure how it happened, but I found myself addicted to Smurf Village on my son's iPad ( he has autism and he uses it in his therapy sessions) and I HAD to find it on Android because I dislike Apple and I rarely even use the ipad unless I need to approve an app download for my kid.

I found myself liking all of those silly village games. Embarrassing, but entertaining for sure. It's nice to see what's available in the market these days. Definitely will check out X Men.

Yeah this is very weird. ROM Manager has always worked like a champion for both me and my brother. Once you set it up it's literally press one button and a little while later you have a new ROM.

Haven't reflashed yet.  Kinda got spooked and just haven't felt like spending the time with the phone shut down.  Maybe this weekend.

Some of the hardcore tinkerers on AndroidForums were adamant about doing everything manually through CWM and that ROM manager was buggy for them as well.  Maybe it is just the Incredible as I was in that sub section for most of those threads.

In my opinion, that's your problem. I have never renamed a .zip file to update.zip in order to flash it. You need to wipe data/cache and then choose install zip from sd card. You then browse to the file in question and then apply.

It never found the file until I renamed it.  Nor did it give me the option to browse to a file.  It simply began the process on its own.  I never wiped the data/cache.  Gonna try that and maybe rename the file back first before trying again.

About to try this.  Should I have the Google Apps add-on in the sd card prior to flashing or is it an option to install later?

*EDIT*  Should I download both the GApps and GTalk add-on or just the one with GTalk?

Wellllllllll..... I may be the brand new owner of a Galaxy Nexus by default before the night is over with.  At the very least by the time the Verizon or Best Buy doors open tomorrow.

I posted the following to AndroidForums but if any of you fine people have an idea of what to do to fix this I would appreciate it.

Quote:
Was trying to flash CM7 again. Came from ROM manager so I assumed the checking of the wipe data and dalvik did that manually so iI applied the update from .zip, rebooted the system and got stuck once again in a bootloop. Pulled the battery and went in and accidentally hit backup instead of looking at my restore options. Got an error on /sdcard/android.secure.

I highlighted wipe data/factory reset and it made the blue choices screen go away and lit up the hat and arrow and then nothing.

Now any choice I make simply lights up the hat and arrow and nothing at all happens.

If I pull the battery and try to turn it on normal I get stuck in a CM7 bootloop.

I may just forget about ROMs after this.

*EDIT*  OK, got CM7 running.  Total user error and I soiled myself for no reason.  Am not happy with the installation of GApps(search widget isn't working anymore, gmail didn't download, had to redownload it) or TiBU restoring which it does not seem to want to do right now.

Maybe after two years of Sense I am having trouble with this from a UI learning curve standpoint but my fear of change is rearing its ugly head.

I really wish I could drop 600+ bucks on a GSM Galaxy Nexus.

Tzu, uninstall the gapps and install it again. Or see if you can find a different gapps download to install on the phone.

I got my Rezound yesterday. It is a very nice, well built phone, extremely fast phone with a beautiful screen, but I can't help but be a bit bored with it. This is NOT the  phone's fault, it's my fault for being so root/ROM obsessed, and having all of the new stuff running on my phones months ahead of time. Anyone else would be in awe running this phone, but it is almost the exact same ROM I'd been using on my EVO for four months.

Still pining away for the Nexus, but the build quality on this Rezound cannot be beat.

My husband wants his Rezound rooted and ROM'd immediately, so I'm doing it this evening. I think I'm going to hold off on mine, in case I change my mind about the Nexus.

Just got my case for my Kindle Fire. This thing is beautiful. Got it from Pad & Quill, a company up in Minnesota.

Cocoa, I got the GApps working but Titanium Back Up shit the bed.  My apps never restored and then they disappeared from TiBU as even being available to restore.  I restored it back to Sense.  I don't back-up my Contacts to Google for various reasons and I couldn't find VZW Backup Manager to restore them and TiBU eventually said there was no data in it at all to restore so I freaked out and went to the backup.

Besides the hiccups and the fear of change I might get back around to it eventually but for right now it seems like too much of a hassle.  as well, AndroidForums is awash with waaayyy too many threads.  They need to enforce redundancy standards(combining threads, deleting others) better and someone over there needs to actually realize that Guides should be written a little less technically.

Sorry it didn't work out for you Tzu. Did you try finding info at the XDA forums?

I'm seriously thinking of rooting my Fire. Someone tell me to do it. I cant live without the Android Market...this Amazon App Store bullshit sucks ass. 99% of the apps I use are not available.

Do it Dylan! You won't regret it! I lasted two weeks with my Nookcolor unrooted, and it was a miserable experience.

GOD! I took me TWO DAYS to get both of our Rezounds unlocked, rooted, backed up, and finally ROM'd. I've never, ever had such trouble rooting a device, but that's what happens when you get a phone that's relatively new on the market and is competing for the developer's time with the holy grail of phones (Nexus).

It was totally worth it, all of the time, the sweat, the freaking out. I cannot stand locked devices. DO IT DYLAN. What do you have to lose? You can always return back to stock if you need to for any reason.

Ive got my Atrix 4G bootloader unlocked, rooted, and running CM7. Everything I'm reading about rooting the Fire is saying that I should hold off...because it's pretty unstable at this point. The reason I would do it is to get the Android Market on it...but that is very iffy working at this point in its development cycle. I'll probably hold off for a little while longer til I see less threads on xda saying "I bricked my Fire!" And then there's the issue of not being able to use Amazon Prime videos if you're rooted.

http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/09/nvidia-and-asus-tease-7-inch-tegra-3-tablet-with-ics-and-249-pr/

7in Tegra 3 tablet with an 8mp camera and running ICS...for 249 dollars? Shit. Sign me up.

I don't really follow Kindle Fire development because I don't have one of course. Still that unstable? Hasn't it been out since November?

So when you sideload apps onto your Fire, are they not optimized and they don't run? I thought it was pretty cool that Amazon doesn't stop Fire customers from sideloading regular Android apps.

Yeah, right now a lot of people seem to be having a problem with running the Android Market on the device. It requires a lot of system file modification to even get it to run. Unfortunately just rooting isnt enough to get it to run correctly. You can definitely sideload apps...but you cant actually download the apps from the android market website. So, you're really stuck with the entirely useless amazon app store. If you want something from the Android Market, you're out of luck. Which ends up being like 99.9% of apps I use.

What do you think about the CM7 Atrix?  I'm waiting for CM9 before bothering to do it on my Atrix.  I'd like to get mirroring out of the HDMI port on this thing.  It's kind of infuriating that it doesn't event do that.

I know this isn't entirely Android related but is anyone else completely underwhelmed with everything that has come out of CES so far this week?

That 7" Tegra 3 ASUS tablet is the tits. And 249$? Want.

Completely underwhelmed by CES. Absolutely no creativity there this year.

My Nookcolor up and croaked on me yesterday, and I have to cash in my Squaretrade Warranty. I'm really upset by it, and didn't want a new tablet at this time.

But since I'll soon have a $249 (minus shipping) check burning a hole in my pocket, I'm seriously considering all of my options.

The Samsung OLED TVs impressed me a bit. I still have questions about the lifetime of the display (rumours of loss of colour fidelity in OLEDs after 2-3 years), and obviously price point, but the picture quality on them is going to be amazing.

The ASUS Padfone is the only thing that has turned my head but I have to temper any excitement with what he mentions in the article.  No fucking way does Verizon EVER carry this.

Yeah, after hearing about the performance issues of the Silk browser, I've kind of given up on the thought of getting the 10" Kindle tablet.  I'm interested in trying an Android 4.0 tablet (and will give it a shot at some point) but I'm mostly holding out for the iPad 3 with Retina display.

I certainly wouldn't mind an Ultra-definition TV either ... I'd just need to also by a top of the line gaming PC to play stuff on it.

The Asus Padfone is nice, but I'm over devices that need a smartphone connected to it in order for it to work to full potential. The Atrix accessories, the Blackberry Playbook, etc. I'd like to keep my devices separate, if at all possible.

The next RAZR will have a 20 hour battery life? And it's coming out within the next month? If I were a current RAZR owner, I would be STEAMING mad. Android manufacturers have got to stop with the constant stream of phones coming out every month. I just don't know how this is sustainable.

See, right now a tablet is a toy for me with no actual use so if I had a phone that could plug in to the tablet and power it and give me that functionality without having two separate devices I think that would be pretty decent.  I also think it makes for a future that I would like to be a part of.  Phone powers tablet and laptop.  Someone in the comments of the article made a good point about the RAZR, super thin phones that slide into tablet and laptop similar to an SD card without leaving the hump on the back of the Padfone.

And yes, Motorola is seriously going to start leaking marketshare with their release schedule.

I think I fall in the middle of the pack as far as productivity with a tablet.

I like tablets, but they need to be portable and with a great screen resolution in order for it to not be a total waste of money. If I have to carry around a bunch of stuff in order to make it function properly, then I might as well have my laptop.

CM7 on the Atrix is great...but I really would wait for CM9...it's looking like development on CM7 has come to a halt. There hasnt been an update (other than the nightlies) in about 4 months.

Does anyone know a simple and safe method of rooting the HTC Desire?  The low internal memory is driving me bonkers.  I've switched browsers to Dolphin HD which allows you to save cache etc to the SD card but I still have fuck-all memory left.  I seem to be permanently stuck on 8 or 9MB or lower.  No space for new apps.

The methods I've found look quite complicated and I really don't want to brick my phone.

Thanks.

I think I used unrevoked on my old one.

Yeah, try Unrevoked. It really is hard to brick your phone while rooting it. Issues from installing ROMs is a different issue.

Loving my HTC Rezound, no regrets.

The longer the Nexus is out the more I hear this on Android sites.  ICS is the shit and all that but the Rezound is far and away mentioned as the most well rounded phone out right now.

Mobile World Congress starts up next week.  So far previews leaking from it have been underwhelming in my opinion.  It seems that dual-core is old tech and everyone is racing to quad-core.  For some reason I feel the tech is advancing at an abnormal rate for innovation and leaving the entire "package" of a phone behind.  Design seems to have stagnated beyond MAKE IT BIGGER! as the Galaxy Note is a huge hit and rumor has it that two other big players are releasing 5-inch+ phones to compete.

Nothing sleek and modern looking coming out but how much can you do with a phone right?  Well as much as I have always hated to admit it the iphone 4 is beautiful until you turn it on that is.  The Nokia Lumia 900 is pure sex but again turn it on and it runs WP7.

I don't want a five inch phone, hell I don't think I can comfortably jump from 3.7 to 4.7 or even 4.3.  I guess it is the same as my fear of leaving hardware keyboards when I got the Incredible; give me a week and I will be raving probably.

Was 2011 the zenith of excitability for Android?  Is that a good thing, meaning phones can last longer than two years and still be relevant?  Is that a bad thing and fragmentation will never go away?

I don't care what the phone looks like as long as it has ICS on it.

It is now running on my Touchpad, and I am hard pressed to think of a mobile OS that I've loved so completely. I mean, nearly everything about ICS is perfect. It should be on every device released in 2012, and any device that doesn't have it should be automatically branded as a failure.

This phone OS crap is garbage.  I wish carriers/phone manufacturers would stop sucking.  My phone is just a year old now and I have no idea if or when I'll get ICS.

I did find out that I'll be getting a Galaxy Tab 10.1 for doing some testing on fairly soon.  I believe ICS is supposed to be coming out for those as well but I guess I'll have to suffer through Honeycomb for a bit first.

Which phone did you have again? The manufacturers have done something they've never done before--most of them have released statements detailing exactly which phones will get ICS aftermarket, so yours might be on the list.

The Atrix 4G is officially getting ICS. Awesome news...but being rooted and bootloader unlocked I will be running ICS before Motorola gets it out.
