Vampire Weekend - Contra (1/12/10) - Page 2

Okay you've both gone out of your way to waggle your dicks in my face and prove how wrong I am, my request for a good starting point with the band still stands.

They've only got two albums, Rain Dog. You don't have much catching up to do. Start with their debut, then move on to the new one. If their debut doesn't click with you, I'd still give Contra a shot. Seems like those that didn't really dig the first album found the new disc to be a welcome surprise. There's definitely a richer, denser palette they're playing with on Contra.

Cool thanks Ray.

There's a link on the previous page where you can stream their whole album for free. I don't own their first album but I love this one. Or click here.

Thanks Div.

When Spike and Rain Dog get in a little fight, it means somewhere an angel both got its wings, and an awesome DD-cup rack.

Hmm, ever actually heard Peter Gabriel era Genesis? It does not sound like Vampire Weekend. He didn't start dabbling in world music influences until his solo career.

I also don't think the Arctic Monkey's comparison is entirely unfair. The two bands use very different colour palettes in their songwriting but the crisp angular instrumental approach and vocal style are quite similar. Both bands have their worth, but the smug college studenty vocals in particular are a barrier for me enjoying VW.

I would actually listen to Contra first myself Rain Dog. On the debut I liked certain songs but when it comes to Contra I like the whole album.

I always took the flute sections of A-Punk to be a direct reference to The Knife. I hear bits of Genesis in the cluttered sound some songs have, where there's a ton of elements each fighting to hold your attention. But that's just me.

No problem. Curious to see how you like it.

Giving up the gun seems like produced by a young Nigel Godrich. http://bit.ly/4KUTYX

By that logic, they also sound like Tull.

The star-studded video for 'Giving Up the Gun'. RZA, Lil Jon, Joe Jonas, and Jake Gyllenhaal all make appearances. Any video that has Gyllenhaal getting pummeled automatically wins brownie points with me.
