Stephen Tyler Quits Aerosmith?

Possibly taking cues from the group's album titles, will veteran rock band Aerosmith continue to Rock in a Hard Place? Or will its fans be force to Just Push Play?

According to rumors – and guitarist Joe Perry himself – it looks like people are going to have to get used to listening to songs like "Dude Looks Like a Lady" without the distinctive warbling of frontman Steven Tyler, who may or may not have left the band.

"Steven quit as far as I can tell. I don't know any more than you do about it," Perry told the Las Vegas Sun. "I don’t know for how long, indefinitely or whatever. Other than that, I don't know."

The rumors were prompted by a recent statement by Tyler, 61, in Classic Rock magazine in which he said his next project was unclear, "but it's definitely going to be something Steven Tyler, working on the brand of myself – Brand Tyler."

"Hasn't called me in months. A bit cold," Perry, 59, wrote on Twitter. "What about fans? The people that also love him and put him where he is. After 40 years? ... Last time I phoned him he hung up on me."

Strained Relations
Relations between Tyler and other band members have reportedly been strained ever since Aerosmith was forced to cancel the rest of its tour in August after the singer hurt himself falling off a stage in Abu Dhabi.

"Obviously, he hasn't been giving 100 percent for a long time," Perry said. "Frankly, the last few months I've been wanting not to rock the boat. I don't want him cancelling any more gigs. We really wanted to do these last four. We didn't want to call him out or get him pissed off, for whatever reason. So we just let things lie."

And the problems go beyond simply business, Perry said. "I still care for him as a person, or at least the person I used to know," he said. "But things change."

And life for Aerosmith without Tyler will go on, he concluded.

"We'll probably find somebody else, and then we'll be able to move Aerosmith up a notch."
OK, so the band hasn't been relevant for at least 15 years, but this is still kinda shocking. I'm sorry, but Tyler's whole career is based upon this ONE BAND, and it's a bit late to branch out and try something new at this point. Besides, I suspect that his solo material will sound like Aerosmith-light.

The band was destined for the State Fair circuit anyways. Them continuing on with a new singer is a bit of joke.

The only thing that ever had me interested in Aerosmith was when they flaunted their blues roots. They could've been a really decent Chicago style blues band.

I like the fact that there's now a story even less relevant than Noel Gallagher quitting Oasis.

About 20 years too late as far as I'm concerned.

'Toys in the Attic' and 'Rocks' are really damn solid albums. That being said, I kinda agree with your statement. Indeed, 'Honkin' on Bobo' seemed to indicate that they were maybe going to commit to the blues, but I don't think that it was very successful at all. I listened to it once and didn't care for the overproduced sound on it.

Yeah, Honkin' on Bobo was surprisingly not terrible.
Damn. I think this band could have gone places, if only they managed to stay together. What a shame.

I'm not a fan of "fixed" jokes, but

That's what I thought. Give them two or three more albums like that and they may have been able to make a late career shift ala Robert Plant.

All their stuff is overproduced, it's part of the problem I had with them. "Dream On" is about the only song I've heard from them that had anything interesting going on in the production department.

This reeks of "Our popularity has waned, Let's 'break up' for 2-3 years and have a reunion tour that will net us billions of dollars."

They haven't had any integrity in years, I don't put this above them.

Tyler and Perry don't need Aerosmith any more, they can both have pretty reasonable solo careers if they want them (on the other hand, they're 60, maybe time to hang up the fucking leather pants). I can't imagine they'll ever let themselves become a State Fair band. Their output since the 70s has been spotty at best and smaltzy at worst, but still man, they were the fucking Toxic Twins. They inspired a shitload of other great bands. I think it's time for them to retire, deny the existance of albums released between 1980 and 2005, and call it a day.

You mean the ones that made them most of their money?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the GH: Aerosmith game moved a ton of copies and made them a shitload of money. Do you think that's because the popularity of the GH/RB genre was at an all-time high (people were buying anything) or due to the fact that it was an Aerosmith game?

Aerosmith hadn't released an album consisting only of new material since 2001, and I think 1985 was the last year the guys composed their own songs without the help of outside writers. In my head, the band's been gone for a very long time now.

I do love Toys in the Attic, Rocks and Draw the Line. Those three albums are amazingly consistent with Draw the Line being one of the most underrated ones ever. Lots of great songs came from this trio, and if were to make an insanely long "Top 500" list of my all-time favorite tunes, I can totally see "Nobody's Fault," "Kings and Queens," "Rats in the Cellar" and "Last Child" making the cut. Great songs.

I'll need to re-evaluate 'Draw the Line', then. 'Toys' and 'Rocks' have really been the ONLY essential albums in their entire catalog, imho.

Not sure I would consider Draw the Line essential Aerosmith actually. It's a good album, and one I feel is often overlooked, but the previous two releases are better. Maybe it's because I'm a fan of the underdog, but I definitely hold up DTL in a decently high regard. The title track rocks (and probably should have been a bigger hit), "King and Queens" is one the all-time great 'Smith tunes and then there are songs like "Sight for Sore Eyes" and "Critical Mass" that never get much attention. If anything, I think it's an album that people can jump right into if they start getting tired of Rocks and such.

I love the expression of the guy in the back. He seems to realize there's something disturbingly wrong with Tyler's appearance.

No shit. And now I clearly see the resemblance between the daughter and the father, humongous lips aside.

They should have quit after 'Pump'.

how many greatest hits albums have they put out anyway?

... and that's my first post. Hi everyone!

They were pretty good backing up RUN DMC.

I see Tyler went all out on his Sleestak costume for Halloween. Never would have figured him for a Land of the Lost fan.

The best thing to come out of Aerosmith in the last 30 years is Liv Tyler.

Desmond Child killed Aerosmith after he killed KISS, and just before he killed Alice Cooper.

I came in here to make the "Do you think he ever sent Run DMC a thank you card for resurrecting their career?" joke. Ah well. They aided a nice title sequence for Dazed & Confused, so there's that.
