Mad Men, Fright Night

Seeing as Fright Night was a riff on Rear Window I feel as though it has already been remade as Disturbia. I mean really, David Morse was basically Jerry Dandrige without the pointy teeth.

Yeah, this certainly is an unnecessary remake. Not to mention it's actually a good entertaining movie in the first place, so there's quite a long ways down.

I do wonder how closely they want to stick to the original. A vampire moves next door and no one will believe the teenager, probably has to stay. But, there are 20 years of pop culture changes since then. Do you parody the Twilight / True Blood crowd? Do you change from the B-movie star / horror host to something more trendy like Ghost Hunters? Or do you stick with the original and go after someone like Bruce Campbell or Robert Englund?

Well, bringing Marti Noxon into the mix is definitely starting things off on the right foot. Hell, this remake will be entirely worthwhile if it does nothing more than convince the studio to release a special edition DVD/Blu-Ray of the original.

I think you have to get away from the horror host angle. From what I can tell, that's entirely a thing of the past (although not a difficult concept for kiddies to grasp). Personally, I think it would be fun if the main character calls on the services of a pseudo-Twilight actor (i.e. a riff on Patinson (sp?)) who is, obviously, in way over his head and definitely not prepared to deal with what vampires are really like.

My money's on gender switching. The girl next door has to save her boyfriend from seductive lady vampire (probably played by one of those women from Mad Men). Peter Vincent is replaced with a Stephenie Meyer type author (Emma Thompson would be good).

Joe Bob Briggs.

Sid Haig as Capt. Spaulding.

A current-day horror host type would be an insufferable asshole whose death you'd cheer.

^ Agreed. They probably should lose that aspect.

Like Mattioli, I am only in it for the inevitable super special edtion of the original (hell, even a nice widescreen copy of part 2!) to surface on DVD... if they do gender switch it like mentioned above, then seeing Joan Holloway in fangs might just tempt me out to see this, dirty mac and tissues at hand, naturally.

I think this will get lost amongst all the vampire overkill and saturation we are and have been experiencing over the last couple of years... it is very likely an attempt to feed from that cash cow. Saying that, if it is gonna happen, anyone got any ideas for the new Jerry Dandrige?

Has there even been a TV horror host in the last 20 years? The target audience wouldn't even know what one is.

They're around. They're on public access. And they're terrible.
In an ideal world, they'd get Joe Flaherty to reprise his Count Floyd character.

Doesn't Cassandra Peterson need a job?

Let's be frank, all horror hosts are basically lame. That's part of their charm. I can't imagine how bad public access hosts are.
Well, yeah. But to be fair, Peter Vincent was an old Peter Cushing Hammer type who was down on his luck. The character just needs to be an old movie star. Christopher Lee?

Elvira? Who says we can't switch up the host's gender, too?
Wilma Deering. She helped Buck defeat the space vampire.

That was my suggestion. Too meta perhaps.

Dan Aykroyd as a guy the kid gets out of the yellow pages. He wears a beige jumpsuit and is named Ray.
I wouldn't be against bringing in Chris Sarandon for whatever equivalent of "former B movie star" they might go with.
Given Marti Noxon's involvment, may I suggest this guy for the Peter Vincent character?

Which guy would that be, Mattioli?
D'oh! It was Giles.
That would be MY NAME IS BRUCE levels of meta.
The horror host idea would make no sense now. Instead the "Peter Vincent" role in a remake should be an action movie hero who was once known as the greatest vampire hunter of the big screen, the ultimate stoic posturing badass mofo. Offscreen: vain, cowardly paper tiger with career now in doldrums, reduced to doing signed pics for $5 a piece at the local horror convention. Assuming he's willing to make fun of himself, that character should be played by Wesley Snipes.

Then they'd be remaking Once Bitten.

Hugh Jackman would kill as Peter Vincent, both on a performance level and as meta wink-wink.

Of all the ideas being thrown around in this thread, I like this one the best, especially if you go the route of having the author either completely believe that vampires are harmless like the ones she writes about, or be someone who realizes her novels are a cynical and jaded cash in.

But I fucking hate Marti Noxon as a writer, so I'm not too crazy about this to begin with.

Yeah, make it "Chris Sarandon" as himself from "the 80s horror flick called FRIGHT NIGHT". Meta-meta.

Or. keep it in the Buffy-verse and make Gellar the washed up actor who can't cut the mustard after her TV show gets the boot. ZING!
Guess you never saw "Cruel Intentions"? So what if her acting sucked? It was worth the price of asmission alone to see Gellar in lingerie, IMO. If this remake promised more of that, I'd rent it at least for that reason alone.

I was going to say, hadn't it already been done (terribly) with My Name Is Bruce.

So long as they don't go with a Harry Knowles-type to bring it into post-internet age. Who's as knowledgable to kids today about how to vanquish horror genre staples as Peter Vincent was to naive young Charlie Brewster: horror geeks.

I hope that doesn't happen.

I'd be surprised if they didn't go with Robert Englund or Anthony Hopkins or Tobin Bell. Or Anthony Head, sure.

I saw it (Lapdance!). But CRUEL INTENTIONS ('99) came out during Buffy's run (97-03) and during her height in popularity. Besides starring in a couple Scooby movies and a few forgettable thrillers, what has she done post-Buffy worth a mention?

She'd probably never poke fun at herself like that (she doesn't have The Chin's self-awareness), but my point still stands.

99? Really? It's that old? My how time flies.

My point about Gellar in lingerie still stands, though. It may be the only thing that elevated this "yet another unnecessary remake" a half step above the others. If it ever happened. Which is doubtful.

Shit. Now I'm depressed.

I'd never argue against that.

Or this...

EDIT: Um, what were we talking about again? Oh FRIGHT NIGHT...
