Modded consoles banned from Xbox live

Apparantly the ban is perminant.

Got to love this quote from one of the Banned players..

it's like telling someone their dog's just died. It was pretty much like that for me. I love it, I love playing Xbox live. I play with my mates all the time. It's just a good laugh, we all sit there chatting, playing games. Now I don't know what to do.

To paraphrase a fictional governor:

Gamers...boy I dunno.

A lot of people on another board I go to (that specializes in legally fuzzy territory) are freaking out and pitching a fit. It's hilarious. People get seriously pissed that Microsoft would actually have the gall to take steps that prevent people from stealing games from them.

Who the hell would be stupid enough to use a modded XBox to connect to Xbox Live???
I've read some stories on the Xbox forums where people who got their RRoD-ed boxes fixed locally rather than sending it Microsoft got banned. Another guy said he opened up his unit to get out a stuck disc. Grain of salt on some of these stories, but it looks like pretty much anybody who so much as cracked the case of their 360 got tossed.

They did this with XBOX 1. I don't see the problem with banning someone from a pay service if your running hacked gear.

That sounds really, really dubious.

The scam I read about is people who have been banned selling their 360s to GameStop which does not check whether the system has been modded (or banned or even if Metroid was still in the case, oops) from Live.
A lot of the stories read like variations on "My dog ate my homework," but some seem like some people who honestly didn't know any better.

Funny thing is, there seem to be a lot of people who "work in the industry" and somehow got Modern Warfare 2 early.

If thats the case im sure you are covered by consumer laws in some way.

Also the article states its the console not the account that's banned, so there is nothing stopping you taking back to the shop and getting a replacement.
Makes you wonder what would happen if Netflix ever had the ability to tell if a disc had been copied.

And then some other sorry bastard buys your console used from Gamestop, goes home, and finds themselves pre-banned from XBL. The cycle of hilarity continues.
I don't really understand the banning the console, but not the account, idea. Sure, it helps cut down on the secondary market, but the account is still active. Why not ban both? Oh and fuck that whiny kid and the BBC for giving him a place to whine about being a thief that got caught.
Because they still want people to pay for a new console and then maybe pay to replace the ripped games they no longer have XBL access with. They don't want to cut out viable customers, even if they have been caught ripping off the company before.

I'm kind of amazed that the PS3 hasn't been similarly cracked yet. I'd imagine it's a combination of factors but given how thoroughly pirates have defeated any copy protection on the PSP, it's still surprising.

That's because Sony has allowed some modifications.

While MS hasn't really thought the banning of the console by itself all the way through, it serves the modding fuckers right - they're mostly just cheats and thieves, and if they're not, they should've known better.
The punishment would be more adequately punitive if Microsoft also "modified" offenders' gamerscores to zero.

No, I'm pretty sure that making the Xboxes COMPLETELY useless would have been more adequate.
I suppose Sony is just happy that people are finally buying PS3s. All it took was a complete redesign and a very drastic price cut.

Microsoft on the other hand continues it's plans for world domination.

What? They're already 75% more likely to catch fire and burn your house down than any other console in history.

How hard is it to understand, stop pirating shit. You can pick up the game used for less than $20 within a year of release for almost every game this generation.

Just suck it up and deal with the fact that getting free games had a real tangible consequence.

Exactly, and if you really want to play a new release as soon as it comes out - rent it, or here's a crazy thought - trade in some of your older games to lower the price.

While I'm all for doing this to prevent piracy I just read the end of that article billylove posted.

Here's the quote: "At press time hundreds of modified/banned consoles are reportedly flooding eBay and other online auction sites, as owners of the blocked consoles presumably try to dupe those who haven't heard the news into buying the damaged goods."

Man...

I'm speechless. How much of an asshole can you be. Not only do you pirate games, but you take advantage of the upcoming holiday season to dupe some parent into buying a crippled console for their kids.

Bravo!

*cue biting, and sarcastic applause*

Those modded systems are probably chock full o' porn, too!

Microsoft blocking the systems is pretty dumb. Block the gamertag. Let these idiots keep spending money on new LIVE accounts, only to be banned again.

Yeah, that makes my blood boil, but this is the obvious problem you run into on eBay. If you've got any sense, you'll buy your console brand new, or get them from a reputable retailer second hand (The game shops need to start doing Xbox Live checks if they've got any decency).
So the assholes have found a way to be bigger assholes? I'm shocked!

Bullshit on this. I had the 12v fan mod put on my 360 after I got the Overheating Halfmoon of Death earlier this year, and I'm still around. So are my other two friends who had this done.

If you got banned, its because you fucked with the disc drive or the hard drive, and yes, MS can tell the difference if youre on Live. There's literally no other way.

Microsoft has suggested that users with banned consoles find another Xbox. However, users with a banned Xbox 360 may not want to throw away their consoles just yet. According to the site 360Mods, c4eva has abandoned work on his Lite-on and Hitachi drive mods to try to establish a workaround.

The new workaround, dubbed iXtreme LT (Light Touch) aims to provide a minimum amount of security checks and aims to make the firmware as close to the stock firmware as possible to prevent detection. This fix may allow modified consoles to return to playing backup discs and other forbidden materials without Microsoft noticing.

Other members of the community are working on strategies to try to undo the changes made by Microsoft, which neuter the banned consoles, depriving them of much of their functionality (though they still will play games offline). Like Apple's attempts to brick unlocked/jailbroken iPhones, it seems only a matter of time before the creative and dedicated community comes up with a full work around.
I'm sure that news is late. Haven't most of the shitheads who were pirating games already sold their systems on eBay or traded them in at GameStop?
The balls on these thieves. The pirates are now bringing a class-action lawsuit against MS claiming conspiracy to make people buy more XBL subscriptions and hardware.
They'd have to disclose their real names to file suit, wouldn't they? A judge isn't going to bother to hear "Scrotacus, Loves2Spooge, et al vs Microsoft."

Agreed. I took my RROD console to a local guy that was obviously on the up and up because I found him on the trusted Craigslist. $30 and 15 minutes later it was working again, and I've had zero issues with bans. Microsoft isn't stupid enough to ban people for fixing Microsoft's own shitty production of the consoles. You want to talk class action lawsuit, that one would actually stick.
Basically if you got banned you're a stupid asshole and you probably have herpes.
While Brad's comment is true, I don't see any of this as an anti-piracy measure at all. If I was a man of lesser moral standing I wouldn't be bothered about pirating games because I barely use Xbox Live as it is. I can count on one hand the number of games I've played on Live this year, all banning the box does is remove the fear of being banned.

And while I do know people who have flashed boxes (And as I've read on Forums), all people have done is pick up the cheapest bare bones box they can and flash it again. Paying £140 for a new box isn't that big a price when you've copied hundreds of £'s worth of games.
