AV Club's Top 30 television series of the decade.

How does South Park not make the list?
Great list. I might move some shows around, but nothing seemed out of place.

Edit: Six Feet Under is WAY too low.

I love that Wondershowzen made the list. I've sent the first DVD to every Chewer who has been partnered with me for the Gift Exchange, in addition to something else.

It wasn't eligible.

Agreed No South Park = Boooooo.

Some will probably say Rescue Me has been too uneven and hasn't lived up to its strong start but that didn't stop them from including BSG.

BSG, while flawed, is still so much better than Rescue Me.

Considering the list, The Soprano is too high for me, but it's personal taste.

It also reminded me to watch The Shield someday.

I'm pretty sure it was, it was just left off the list. The Scott Tenorman episode was listed here, however.

So glad to see Big Love on the list. I know it gets a lot of love critically, but I never seem to hear about it. Yay.

And of course...number 1 deserves the 1 through 5 slots, if we're being honest.
I'm not sure how Undeclared made the list. It's a nice little show but it's not top 30 of the 00s.
Reading that list made me go: "Fuck, there has been so much great god damn television in recent years." Yeah, there's been crap, and maybe I'm discerning, but I like to think the crap to awesome ratio has been getting better.

Personally, I find it hard to believe that there have been 30 great shows in the past ten years.

*runs off to check the list*

Buffy made it and they started the same year.

ETA: I'd argue for Scrubs, as the first 5 seasons were greatness.
I was happy to see FREAKS AND GEEKS make it, but even happier to see UNDECLARED. F&G always felt like it was made for someone like me. UNDECLARED felt like it was made for me.

I'm a pretty big Rescue Me fan, but I really have to disagree with that last part.

Fuck me, yeah, I just saw that. Missed it the first time through. Which is weird because I don't think any other entry started before the '99-00 season. You're right, SOUTH PARK needs to be on this list.
I simply don't get the superlatives How I Met Your Mother gets. It's an agreeable enough sitcom, but better than The West Wing?

Scott Tenorman Must Die made the "best episodes from shows not making the any other list" list, below is what they said:

Quote:
South Park, “Scott Tenorman Must Die” (July 11, 2001)
Although South Park was a bigger cultural sensation in the ’90s, almost all its best episodes came in the first half of this decade...
So really, how does it not make the list?

Also I love the fuck out of Wondershowzen.

Get Netflix. Add all 30 shows to it. Done.

Agreed. I've watched maybe a dozen episodes. It's an amusing little show and they put it higher than Curb. Unacceptable.
I'm guessing the only reason Band Of Brothers isn't #2 is because it wasn't eligible on account of its run. On first glance I thought Lost was too high but in spite of its myriad flaws it does deserve big ups for ambition. 30 Rock should be above the US Office too, not only for being funnier but being consistently so. How I Met Your Mother always strikes me as an unsatisfying waste of a great cast, there's no way that's better than South Park.

All in all a good enough list though.

Have Netflix. Have seen many of these shows. Still reading the top 5, which is great. Wondering when I'm going to hit my first snag. The top 5 alone makes me love this list. Freaks & Geeks definitely deserves to be that high.
Holy shit, this is an excellent list! I suppose I'd throw South Park in there (over Tim and Eric), but they really seem to have a strong grasp of what worked and why. There's a couple things I'd move up (Venture Brothers, Six Feet Under, Deadwood) or down (Friday Night Lights, Lost) but on the whole, this is quite accurate.

The list makes a strong arguement for the 00s being pretty much the greatest decade for TV as an art form. I think someone earlier said there couldn't possibly be 30 great shows from the last year, but damned if they didn't make a good case. Also, sorry, but I like that they didn't include Supernatural.

ETA: Oh damns, there's like four other lists on their main site. Fucking reading.

I like to think that maybe it's like the Bible on the bestseller list, everyone knows it sells more than anything else ever, so really the #1 book is actually #2.

Least, that's how I like to look at it...

Haven't seen a lot of these (Undeclared, I know, I know). I'd add 'Scrubs', but I'm aware those middle seasons were kind of rambling. Still love it, though!

Band of Brothers made their list of mini-series and TV movies, which they kept separate from ongoing series.

It's a sitcom. Done better. And better than Curb. West Wing is just too low, but Mother is at the right place.

And the idiots placed it #5. While Generation Kill, their #1 was good, it's far from the greatness of Band of Brothers. Far from it.

I completely agree, I never understood the love it gets. THe other show on the list I think clearly doesn't deserve to be on it is Veronica Mars. But its great the Shield is getting the respect it deserves.

I'll buy that Doc, I think the list is good enough that there's no way they left it off on quality terms so one of us must be about right.

Gotcha. #5 though? Crazy days.
I'd attempt to mount a defence of How I Met Your Mother, but it's the sort of show which seems to either get its hooks into you or leave you cold. It's one of the few shows I try and keep up to date with (alongside Community and Supernatural) at the moment and it's a 'pure joy' kind of show. Whilst it's got an emotional plot structure the show works best when its been wacky or when its being cutesy and that's because in my view its got one of the best and most likeable traditional sitcom casts in a long time.

What a large number 30 is for this kind of thing. List articles like these have devolved into "here's every show I really like" or "My DVD collection".
Breaking Bad definitely deserves to be as high as it is. Would switch out that How I Met Your Mother slop for Always Sunny.
One foreign show?

That's more what I was going for with my initial, skeptical comment.
Carnivale should be on that list.

I'd also swap out Buffy for Angel. Buffy's greatest run was in the 90's, while Angel's greatest run was this decade.
Whilst I liked the show I'm kind of perplexed at Firefly being there. It had a lot of potential and it was a fun diversion, but it didn't exist long enough to really have the impact it wanted.

To be fair, the past few years have resulted in some very good TV, arguably some of the best the medium provides. This list is large enough to include many different genres (Although, 2 versions of The Office? Really?) and some questionable omissions (Always Sunny, f'r instance.)

Yes! Angel is a perfect exemple of a much superior spin-off.
Whoa, whoa! I'm only on Deadwood at the moment...

but you're meaning to tell me that How I Met Your Fucking Mother beats out Carnivale?! And I was loving the list so much (Shield be damned)
It's a great list. I just read the list for best TV episodes, from shows not on any of their other lists, and I liked it alot too. I think they missed one though: The Finale of "Life".
What the fuck @ no Pushing Daisies ...
Friday Night Lights is about 10 spots too low. Firefly? It might have had potential, but someone at the AV Club seriously loves Whedon.
The two best shows of the decade, the delightful Burn Notice and the outrageous Nip/Tuck, didn't even chart! What a farce.

Fixed.
Good on them for recognizing Daisies on the ep list, as well as the superb Scrubs ep with Brendan Fraiser.
30 Rock ahead of Curb? Fucking please.

Curb should've been much, much higher. That's a top 10 show, easy.
Shit. Forgot Burn Notice. That's a fun one.

I think that's about right, we were noticing that Buffy is the only pre-'99 show on the list. Not that I don't like both of those shows (although Angel > Firefly and maybe Buffy when all's said and done).
list reads like a love letter to HBO ... a false one at that ... Eastbown & down is nowhere near worthy of being anywhere on that list.

And did I miss it, or was supernatural nowhere on that list ... because thats a bad joke.

Glad to see venture bros got such a nice blurb though.

It's listed under best miniseries.
Great to see Breaking Bad so high. I'm suprised more people aren't pissed Tim & Eric got a spot anywhere...i love the show but it seems to repell people more often than not.
