The Paul McCartney Film Canon - Page 2

Wow, a thread about my favourite subject: ME!

I don't know what to say, except I just like movies I think are actually good, or at least have an honest intent, or an overall nice atmosphere, or have something of interest. I like movies that are clear and easy to follow, which are growing increasingly rare, which I why I watch a lot of old stuff. GUNGA DIN is watchable. THE DARK KNIGHT or whatever crap people on these forums like is virtually unwatchable. Almost literally unwatchable. I'm not joking. I can outline reasons for why I think this, and have done in the past, but nobody cares.

Basically, I'm a confused old man trapped in a virile internet-using young man's body.

Phil and I have already deconstructed you, Paul. Your participation is superflous at this point.

I wouldn't be surprised to learn that you are Snyder, because I know your work here will inspire an entire generation of future message board posters.

...I give him credit for trying something different, y'know?
I am now glad I started this thread, just because of this post.

But I started a whole thread for it! I do honestly want to hear more.
I like the guy, I think he is one of the most honest posters here.

In fact; Paul, Fleed and even Princess Kate show a genuine love of film (in their own way) and just want to talk about it.

You may not think they have as good taste (or are as smart) as you* but hell at least they try.

*no one in particular.
He's not honest in the slightest, and doesn't "try". Trying would preclude brushing off an entire thread devoted understanding your particular taste with "no one cares anyway". He's always been an immensely tired, one-note joke, and this thread has only reinforced that, unfortunately. I know Phil meant well.

This.
Yeah, I don't know where the fuck that "honest" thing came from.
I don't have anything to add (surprise, surprise) to this thread except to say amen to Phil, Malmordo, Parker, Bob and Ryan.

I care too Paul, you intriguing son-of-a-bitch, you need to lay that shit on this thread because unique is a rare commodity in movie message boards and you have it. There aren't many non-staff posters as entertaining or enlightening as you and as much as you may not be universally encouraged surely there's enough genuine curiosity expressed here to tell you that your ideas are valued. Step on up and illuminate the place.

Are you looking for prominence at CHUD boards? Mission accomplished you have your own thread.

That's okay. We'll all still love you if you decide to go ahead and make the same hilariously ironic "joke" of a post another 2600 times in a row.

I figured this thread would turn into a "What The Fuck Is Wrong With Chewers 2K9" repository pretty fast (sorry, Parker and Phil, you guys tried!) but in no way is he the only person on this board guilty of this behavior.

EDIT: And yeah, I know I'm one of them, I'm not claiming to be on any sort of high horse whatsoever. I'm a pretty terrible boarder.

I actually rarely write "this", but Schwartz's post really summed up you so well. I'm as bad a poster on these board as you'll find, honestly.

But you make Fabfunk's dead pornstars jokes really fresh. So props to you for that.

Bullshit, you contribute plenty. And McCartney's funny in the right context, he is what he is. I'm not sure I'm ready for serious introspective McCartney.
I'm not sure I'm ready. Still laughing at the Zack Snyder comment.

I don't mind stupid jokes. It's making the exact same one over and over with nothing to break it up it gets real old real fast. Moltisanti has a rather similar schtick, but carries it off much better with just a little variation in his material and a bit of honesty about his taste. Not having a giant, irritating sig also helps.

I'm not looking to burn the guy at the stake or anything. There are very few posters I have any sort of problem with at all, but I roll my eyes every time I scroll past a post of his. I actually thought this thread just might change that a bit, but of course it's just been more of the same.

I turned off signatures in my user settings, and I can't recommend it enough. Reading everyone's clever movie quotes over and over isn't much better when it's not yellow and fuschia and in 36 point font.
I was on the anti-McCarthy boat for a long time, but I have to admit, the Salute to Home Improvement sig was funny. And when you put him up against people like Princess Kate (who is also not as bad as some people make out) and Durrrmingo, I can't really complain. He knows more about movies than most people who claim they love movies do. There's a Joe Dante quote that I use a lot that I think sums him up: "There are people who love movies, and there are people who love the movies they love." He's a little bit of both.

Now there's a ringing endorsement. Actually, and I preface this by saying I don't frequent the Bond thread where apparently he participates more fully, what I dislike about about his posting style is how it talks at the thread rather than with it. He almost never participates in any conversation that may be happening, but still feels the need to put ironic little asides in there to just kind of sit next to the discussion. And I'm frankly more curious about that impulse than his film taste*. Most of the time, my posts are prompted by disagreeing with something someone has said. The rest are stupid jokes and whatnot that are just as inconsequential as anything Macca's written, but I do wonder what compels someone to regularly post on a message board where they have no interest in actually conversing with anyone.

*Guy likes his movies breezy, witty and unchallenging. Nothing wrong with that.
Bottom line, the guy clearly doesn't want to reveal anything about himself and he's not going to start now. The end.
By Honest I mean that he has never done a u turn on an opinion (to my knowledge). Although in hindsight Honest was probably the wrong word. Consistent would be a better discription I think.
I can wait another day
Until I call you
You've only got my heart on a string
And everything a-flutter...

Oh, pardon me. I didn't hear you come in.

My opinion? Just because someone watches a lot of movies, it doesn't automatically mean they know a lot about movies.
Thread Starter
Yeah, I shoulda put this in the Bond thread, because I don't recognize a lot of these complaints. Doesn't want to reveal himself? He's posted pics, a blog link with his real name, childhood photos, stories about his grandpa, etc.

As for "knowing a lot about movies", it's not film criticism, but he's posted a ton of backstories, anecdotes and film history, which 99% of the time is going to be more interesting than the opinion of some stranger on the internet.
I didn't mean that as a slam at PM, more a general observation. But if you want to know where his particular brand of movie love comes from, why not just ask him?

Absolutely. I should start a thread on it, maybe.
I think one of the reasons Macca is so reviled (and this may even a subconscious thing with most), is that he just kind of exposes all of us as being full of hot air. Cuz, you know, what are we doing here? Talking about Conan The Barbarian and shit. And we pat ourselves on the back for doing it with more eloquence than, say, ComingSoon.*

I'm ashamed to admit that even I thought along the lines of "Buck, blood and beast! His esoteric knowledge of movies featuring laser weapons and bat-men is wholly incongruous with ours! He shall surely not last more than a week here, the rake!" But, you know, he kinda started cracking me up with each post. Now, he's one of maybe five or six people whose names will make me click a thread I otherwise wouldn't be interested in.

Phil's right, it's not the movie a person likes that says something about the person. It's why that person likes that movie. And I think Macca's definitely been consistent there.

*And we use asterisks cuz the guys on the main page do it.
Paul, I think the best way to describe your style is corny. People who take their personal opinions of movies very seriously and speak about them as if they're fact won't like that.

I thought your "RIP Dark angel Heath" sig was hilarious fwiw.
I was both amused and slightly disgusted by "RIP Bashful African Prince Suckin' Young Mexican Cocks in Heaven" or whatever it was when it showed up for a brief while post-MJ.
I don't like reading when he reveals personal info. I like to pretend he's the actual Beatle Macca. Makes his Golden Girls avatar, Home Improvement user text, and ridiculous sig wonderful.
It helps if, when reading PM's posts, you imagine them being typed by Geoffrey Holer ("Baron Samedi in Live and Let Die), dressed in a white tux and top hat, and throwing back his head and going "HAHAHAHA" was he hits the "enter" key
post #84 of 135
McCartney is probably this best poster on this forum
post #85 of 135
I'm a big fan of PM. He makes me laugh consistently.

I miss his giant sig when he quoted Domingo...

"Jesse James shattered me to the point I was shaking." - Domingo

That used to make me laugh every time.

I lurked here for a good while before joining, and Paul always struck me as cool. Yes, he has odd tastes, but we all have movies we probably shouldn't like as much as we do, but by God we do love them. He can be awfully stubborn and prickish, but he's generally amusing and literate.

On the subject of other posters who appear to be targets, I have to ask: Why the dislike for Spike Marshall? He clearly knows his stuff.
Paul is good people. IIRC: He stuck up for me when I first came to the boards when it was a hot-bed of action and excitement. He's a unique lone wolf.

ETA: Excuse me. You're new. Welcome.

Spike pops at the mouth and shots himself in the foot one too many times. He's been respected - but yet disrespects other members for no good reason. Our war will continue.

You're not reading his posts if you are asking that question. Both Nolan Batfilms and Quantum of Solace took a beating from him. Casino Royale to a lesser degree.

What's interesting is that for all the antagonism, Devin/the site's recent, vocal assertions about how realism is killing movies is pretty in line with a lot of McCartney's complaints about the films he hates. They both want the same Batman movie, I think.
A beating, really? I recall there being some stuff in both CR and QoS he didn't like, but I thought he'd warmed up to them!
No, I legitimately hate QUANTUM OF SOLACE now. I was reading the last couple of pages of the post-release thread recently, and it was very LOL if I do say so myself!

So yes, I hate a lot of movies. But only because I love movies, and it pisses me off to see them done so badly, so frequently. See, I'm a movie fan!

Some movies I hate are:

JUNGLE 2 JUNGLE
FOR RICHER OR POORER
JOE SOMEBODY

More on the way guys!
Poor Tim Allen.

Regale us with your untapped, in depth insight of Redbelt! It's Tim "The Tool Man" Allen's bid for dramatic acceptance, and even his character's name "Chet Frank" just screams struggle and inner character turmoil!

(Sarcasm aside, I think the movie's pretty good and Allen's a good reason why.)

Paul, how can you love Moonraker and hate Quantum of Solace?

Both are Sheer Spectacle!

Both have ridiculous plots by Master Villains!

Ok, so Moonraker has an exploding space Station, but Quantum has an exploding Hotel! A hotel that is 50% rooms and 50% lethally combustible fuel cells!

Moonraker has Jaws, but Quantum has that emo guy with the menacing toupee!

Both gave thrilling boat and car chases plus plenty of product placement! Whats not to love?

I for one am glad that we share a dislike for Spider-Man 2. It sucks not liking a movie that everyone in the world thinks is the next best thing. I love movies but I think Spider-Man 2 is the most overrated film discussed on the forums.

At the same time, I loved The Dark Knight, and I'm a huge Nolan fan. But I kinda get where Paul is coming from. I'm never looking for everyone to share my taste exactly because that's not the point. But I hate getting berated for having bad taste just because I don't love a movie everybody else loves. That's stupid. Its not like I don't like it for the hell of it, or to be different. I have legitimate reasons why it doesn't work for me.

I guess the attitude sometimes confuses me around here. Constant emphasis on film discussion, which I think is great. But when someone with a very unique point of view comes along, they get shut down constantly and get called dicks, as if they only way you can fit in is if you share the exactly same taste as certain people. And if you try to defend yourself, people get defensive, or rudely just dismiss you as wrong. Why do people read film criticism? To have their own ideas reinforced back at them? No. That wouldn't make any sense. My favorite critics are the people I frequently disagree with (for the right reasons), or agree with sometimes and disagree with others. I like to be challenged a little bit in that sense. And I think when someone comes along who clearly knows quite a bit about movies and has a unique point of view about them, we should listen to them a little instead of just instantly shutting them down and telling them they're wrong.
