Scrubs Season 9.

Thread Starter
I just saw the commercial for this the other night, starting December 1. I'm torn, because I've really loved the series, save for a few clunkers in season 7. The finale of Season 8 was so great as a series finale, so I'm nervous about bringing the show back and re-vamping with a big cast update (Braff, from what I've heard, will only be in a handful of the first few episodes).

On the other hand, if the same writers are retained, and a lot of the cast members are still around, it could be great. Any excuse to have McGinley keep playing Dr. Perry Cox is a good excuse, right?

Yeah, they went out on such a strong note that I will, at the very least, DVR it on December 1st. Why else? Because we are all bastard-coated bastards with bastard filling. That's why.
At least from the looks of it, they didn't change it up to the 3 camera audience set-up. So that's good.
I just watched the series finale for a blu-ray review, and I thought it was total sap. I'm going to be torn apart by fans for saying that, aren't I?

Of course not. We'll just tell you that you're wrong. So very, very wrong. One of the best series finales ever. Except it's not really a series finale now. Bizarre.

I was never a fan of the idea of SCRUBS 2.0, and I'm still annoyed that they're calling it SCRUBS instead of SCRUBS MED (thus specifying it as a spinoff).

But, uh, yeah ... I'll be watching.
The finale is a bit sappy, but the show always toed that line and I always kind of loved it for that. Seasons 1-5 and 8 are probably my favorite sitcom ever, if this sucks I can just ignore it. I kind of wish JD wasn't involved in any of the episodes though.

From what he's posted on his blog, he won't be much, and for long. He's supposed to pretty much start it and then hand it off.

Agree with Zak, no one is going to rip you apart. Quick question, when you handle your blu-ray discs are you more careful because of your retard strength?

When I read Lawrence's explanation for keeping the show around (keeping people employed, while he has stories to tell), I could understand.

Good to know what I'm in for. The DVDActive readers are waaaaay less eloquent than Chewers. I'm prepped now.
Less eloquent is an understatement. Still, they shouldn't have brought the show back. Launch a new IP. There's only so much more you can mine out of Sarah Chalke.

She's gone, too, aside from a few episodes.

Although I'd like to prove your theory wrong with my own personal mining expedition.

Screw that. I'm coming for you, Powers. And why? See the above-referenced bastard comment. That's why. Yeah!
As far as Lawrence is concerned, this is a "new" show. He lobbied hard to get them to change the title to "Scrubs Medical" or something to reflect that it'd be about med students with Turk and Cox as profesors rather than a continuation of Scrubs.

Hahahaha. You're the greatest, Cassady.

I thought the finale last year worked great as an end but I'm willing to check this out for a few episodes. Cox and Turk ably took over the spotlight in the last year. Also, Jo is back!
Isn't Judy Reyes gone too? It's gonna be weird, nigh impossible, to have Turk without Carla.

Also, the lack of Neil Flynn is so very, very, very distressing. I'm going to give it an episode or two, but it's got a bad hand starting out regardless.

I guess if I'm getting murdered I might as well go all the way: Screw Sunny in Philly! Everything you like is awful, even the things I like, Mattioli.
Neil Flynn is gone?! ouch.
I'm pretending it isn't happening. Like Zombie's Halloween reboot. and One Hot Minute. And the Eliza Dushku/Rick Fox relationship. Those don't exist in my universe.
I'm just watching it for Eliza Coupe and Dave Franco. The sooner JD and co. are transitioned out, the better. And I loved a lot of S8, but it's gotta be all or nothing at this stage.

More importantly, Better Off Ted is back the week after.
Aah crap, I have to get the DVD review of the final season up. Fucking deadlines!

Will watch, but only because I love all things Scrubs. Unnecessary, but fuck it, could be great.

Speaking of Ted in a Scrubs thread, do we get Sam Lloyd back for a cameo once in a while?
"It is also known that Ted Buckland will leave the show during the season as actor Sam Lloyd has decided to move on"
Just saw a commercial on ABC during football with JD being convinced by Turk to come back, and The Todd makes an appearance. They're sure not advertising it like Braff is only around for a few episodes.

Hey! Let's none of say anything we're going to regret later.
So what did everybody think? New Blond Student is cute, but is pretty obviously a Season 1 JD analogue.
I like angry guy med student, too.
No I do not know their names.

Totally...which I think is a detriment. It just feels weird having so much of the focus be on the old crew. I kind of wish JD & Turk would just have been in the first ep and then out. I'm kind of OK with Cox staying around.
I admit I wasn't in the best of moods, or situations (icy glares can kill comedy), but I enjoyed this. Definitely kind of a retread of season 1, especially the drunk guy episode, but the characters are fun and dynamic enough. Lucy is cute and certainly lovable, but I wonder how she'll be able to "headline" like Braff on the Braff-less episodes.

Bummed there was no Carla, either. But man, I always enjoy a good Professor Doctor Cox verbal beatdown.
Just caught up and in some sort of guilty way I was happy to see the old crew back and the little hints that the dream montage at the end of last season did play out.

Once Braff is out, I think I am though. I think the next 4 years (if it lasts that long, and how long med school is) might be a retread of season 1, with Cox in full mentor mode. The new kids are cute, but I don't remember anyone off the top of my head. Feels like Saved by the Bell: The New Class all over again. Dr Cox is the new Mr Belding.

Wonder why they didn't mention Carla at least? What happened to Dr Cox being the Chief of Medicine?
It was a little like seeing KISS in concert circa 1982. Yeah, there's Gene and Paul, they're singing the same songs, but who the hell is that on drums and guitar?

It's gonna take a little getting used to.
The wife hated it, but sometimes it takes a while for things to grow on her. She thinks this will become another AfterMASH.

I, on the other hand, think it has promise. First episode was uneven, but I quite enjoyed the second (although it still has to find its own voice).

* Lucy (the new JD) does nothing for me, probably because it's just a female JD and JD was one of my least favorite elements of the show. Must there always be this kind of character for audience identification? I can live (I suppose) with the internal narration, but fantasies too? Trying too hard to recreate what came before.

* Rich kid is also annoying, and seems too much like Aziz Ansari's character from last season. I'll be happy if they (writers and teachers) find ways to make him the whipping boy.

* Drew is cool, I would've been much happier if he was the new main character, but c'est la vie. Denise is still great, cute and mean is a devastating combo for me. The writers pushed their emotional relationship too fast and that may be one place where they (the writers) really fuck up.

* Hot Australian girl is hot and Australian. Many thanks for the gratuitous bikini top & shorts shot.

* Missing Ted, liking the security guards (the big black guy is from the Miller High Life commercials where he takes beer from the hoity-toity and redistributes them to the hoi polloi.) Hope we get some guest stars from the old gang, a la Frasier.

So, several things I'm less-than-thrilled about, but it gave me enough of the warm fuzzies that I'll keep with it. I understand they want to retain the feel of the original, but it must be allowed to become its own thing, for good or ill.

It is kind of odd that we're supposed to believe there's been a school behind the hospital all these years.

One thing I noticed -- the episode titles are now "Our _____________" rather than "My ____________", perhaps indicating a more ensemble driven show. Maybe they should give all the students the JD-style flashes rather than just Lucy to emphasize that.

They did mention in the first episode that the old hospital was torn down, and a new one was built near the school.
Ah, missed that.
Wow I didn't even connect it with the drunk/drugs(?) guy episode from season 1. It was like exactly the same, right? JD gets too attached to a patient who just disappoints and then dies.
Actually it was Elliot on 2 separate occasions: a former heroin addict for whom Elliot was trying to persuade the hospital upper ranks to grant a heart valve transplant (they allowed it but the guy never showed up for the subsequent rehab appointment), and a recurring character who conned Elliot for drugs (but who had evidently conned Dr. Cox in the past and who conned Jordan later in the series.)

But yeah, it's been done.
JD had that cancer patient in, I think season 1.

Nekkerbee is right, it was Elliott, though I think it was season one that J.D. had the patient who had the lung cancer scare, only to light up as soon as he walked out of the hospital.

I just watched the two episodes last night. It made me think of Archie Bunker's place. There was certainly a good chunk of laughs, and I'll give it the benefit of the doubt, but I'm not sold.

Leaving aside the ridiculous premise (or maybe not so ridiculous? hell, I'm not in the medical field) that they all just upped and started teaching at a medical school, I really kind of enjoyed it. It definitely has more of an ensemble feel and, as Dickson notes, the episode titles now begin with "Our _____". That being said, it was one hell of a lot better than Season 7, so I'm in for the ride (at least for now).

Couple of points:

I loved the resolution of the Janitor's story. "After that day, no one ever saw him again."

Classic Cox. If this show goes off the air, they should start another spin-off called "Cox Rocks" in which he roams the earth like Cain on "Kung Fu". Only, instead of physical beatdowns, he levies mental and intellectual ones... okay, and the additional physical beatdown, as well. I loved that he made Broody Guy wear a Number One sign and send him a text photo every ten minutes, especially shower picture. Will we see Jordan and Jack at some point?

Rich Kid (Dr. Wolverine, from the commercials) is nothing more than a riff on Elliot's intern from Season 2 or 3... the one who wouldn't shave the guy's pubes for surgery because his dad was a chief donor to Sacred Heart. He's definitely the most annoying character, but that's sort of the point. Also, points for "Wing Mom".

Mmmmmm, Australian Girl.

I loved JD's description of he and Turk (paraphrasing): "Our relationship is like a Blooming Onion. Delicious, but also unhealthy."

Also, "Nachbros".
I forgot about Elliot's intern! They've gotta be aware of so many similarities...

I also loved the Janitor's departure, though, seeing the show that Neil Flynn is on now, something tells me we'll see him back on scrubs within a year.

Yes
Bub, I'd like to perform an invasive procedure on that! Amiright?!?
I like comparing Denise to a gremlin.

Also the rich kid was bugging me because he looked so familiar and I found out he's James Franco's little brother.

I enjoyed the first 2 episodes and I'm with y'all, love the Australian girl.
Thought they were trying way too hard in the first episode (the running across the yard bit) but loved the second episode particularly the ending.

Second the love for the Gremlin references.
I was about ready to ignore it after the first episode, which was pretty rough. But I laughed quite a bit during the second episode. At some point this season, I think I want an episode of nothing but Cox teaching, and insulting his students. I would also watch the hell out of a show where Fonzie cared for a Gremlin.
Still funny, but I'm looking forward to J.D. leaving. Which is weird to say.

I think most of us know what you mean. It is weird, but I want the new show to be NEW and stand on it's own.
Yeah, JD is definitely feeling forced in right now. When he leaves the show will probably improve, if only be giving the other characters enough time to develop their own personalities more fully.
Goodbye Ted and Gooch.

Franco is annoying as hell. He needs to go.

Also, what the fuck did JO do to her face? She was smoking hot last season and looks terrible this year.
