Good, free software to speed up your PC?

My Dell Laptop infuriates me. Takes ages to load and freezes like a frigid nun in Alaska.

I've done disk clean-up, defragmentation and tried to free up the hard drive. Although I've only got 15GB free from 64.

any reliable, free downloadable software which can help?

Have you tried a fresh reinstall of Windows? Software that claims to speed up your PC usually isn't any good. You are better off using software that requires less system resources, and recommendations in that respect are probably specific to what you use your computer for.

I concur with englebert. XP is renowned for its need to be reinstalled every once in a while.

If that is not an option, constant defrag, or increase RAM.

But yeah, do a reinstall will probably be good to rebuild your registry. XP gets junked over time.

will doing a reinstall mess up the rest of your programs/files?

If your operating system is still in factory condition try this. I've cut down boot times by almost half on some laptops. But you need some computer knowledge.

Yes. Though, you can attempt a repair, but that will not accomplish much.

thanks. I have Vista. Might try ccleaner.com, or invest in an external hard drive!

Are Western Media passport drives any good?

Vista speed up tip 1: Don't use an Aero theme
Vista speed up tip 2: Downgrade to XP

Go with LaCie external drives...they're inexpensive and pretty solid. I've got a 1TB one and you have to put your ear on it to hear it. Barely warm to the touch even after being on for hours.

If your not afraid to get a little technical you can use that as a good starting point. I've been running with the Tweaked version for nearly a year with my laptop and have had zero problems. I really don't do a whole lot with the PC besides internet and a couple games, so some of the services disabled might be important to you.

I've found that MSconfig is helpful for XP, just turn off loads of the autostart stuff and i stopped getting any kind of freeze or useless systray shit. Also, check that you haven't just put some bullshit new software on it - my buddy just put norton360 on his machine and it killed it.
