Is Jame's Franco's career in need of medical help?

James "Spiderman" Franco is going to spend two months on GENERAL HOSPITAL

What on earth would make him want to drop out of feature films for two months to work on a soap opera? My mind is officially boggled. Is this the only kind of work he can get? What is the appeal of this, as far as he is concerned?

PS: I think he may have had to finish one too many cross joints by himself. That's the only explanation as far as I can tell

Acting for soaps requires a different set of "muscles" and skills than film or "regular" tv acting. My best guess is that Franco took an acting class at Columbia where they studied soap acting and he's trying to see if he learned anything.

That's possible. I wouldn't doubt he could be curious about it.... but, it's just a risky PR move, and seems sort of like playing chicken with career death. Has ANY star on his level ever done this before?

Because... why build up/explore your soap talents unless you want a career in soaps? (and there won't be any such thing as a 'soap career' for much longer)

Also, 2 month arc does not mean he is working for them for 2 months. In fact, he is filming all 2 months of his scenes in 3 days (not in a row, though).

How is that possible? Don't soaps write on the fly?

Hooray for month-old news!

Anybody actually been watching this? As someone who tuned in when Rick Springfield made his return (Dr. Noah Drake!) as well, I couldn't help but be curious.

I thought I heard some rumor a while back that his mom was a fan of the show and that's why he's doing it. Guess that was wrong. Seems like he's just up for the challenge of a 5-day-a-week show.

No one else had posted about it, and it was just this week written up in EW. (To which I recently began to suscribe)

I'm not going to quote her posts for those that don't want to read them, but Kate, soaps are basically a form of televisied theater in a lot of ways. They have multiple cameras running through a scene, and you have to really be up on hitting your marks, so you know when you need to act for a closeup verses a wide, etc. There are even a set number of "moves" that people who go through soap acting classes/training take. As that article with Franco shows, it also requires a lot more memorization than normal film acting, where if you screw up, you can do it until you get it right -- 65 pages is average, I've heard more and less, and soaps try to get as much as they can done in one sitting rather than do multiple takes.

And they don't make it all up on the fly -- these things are planned out and written months in advance. They have to be. The shows air every day for most weeks of the year, there's not a lot of time to "write stuff on the fly."

I didn't know this was airing, btw. And there totally was a thread in gossip or TV about this. I know, because I think I made it.

Thanks alot for the info, RB. Interesting info. It seems like it's a kind of pointless skill to practice, since everything I've read has said that the soaps are on their way out.

The one thing I'd say is there is nothing wrong with quoting my posts in this thread, they've all been reasonable and polite.

I was completely unaware of this until now, but James Franco may be one of my favorite people in the world, and this is up their with his cameo in the The Wicker Man in terms of sheer wtf-ness. And hey, if his character develops convenient amnesia at some point, he already has experience. Oh, and "Naomi" from Lost is in this? I might have to check this out.

Also, how many more covers of "Mad World" do we need?

You watch General Hospital, and yet, you're an Enemy of the Stamos? That doesn't seem fair.

Just chalk it up to not being a Blackie and the Riff Raff fan.

He was in that? I saw the movie. I can't even recall...

He shows up in the very last scene with John Ritters son, and they meet two of "The Bitches!!!" in a bar. I think it's in the movie it may have been a deleted scene. Sadly my Wicker Man re-make knowledge is a bit hazy.

More of a Frisco Jones man, then?

Considering he also will be a guest star on 30' rock this thread couldn't be more wrong too.

It's the very last scene before the end credits.

McNooj's current avatar is perfect for this thread, dammit.
A soap opera with some James Franco? add Pie, and we're talking.

So a sequel would be the same just with James Franco punching women, stealing bikes and getting OH NO, NOT THE BEEEEES!?
Interesting.

Based on Yesterday news, James Franco's career clearly isn't in trouble.

Didn't I see him in the trailer for Date Night next to Mila Kunis as well?

Franco's doing great I thought.

Franco has been pretty great on GH. He has been genuinely creepy on there to the point my wife says he creeps her out every time he is on. I thought they were going to give him something more goofy to do or team him up with some different actors, but he has been pretty awesome as a psycho.

And yes I watch General Hospital.

Spoiler Alert: This is how James Franco died on General Hospital.

Also, because I love this video and don't know if it's been posted yet: James Franco and Bill Hader wish Sam Raimi a Happy Birthday

Really excellent profile of Franco's various pursuits in New York magazine.

His character actually lived. And faked his death. It is a soap opera.

This whole thing reads like a completely sincere joke. Fascinatingly hilarious. Especially those General Hospital quotes. Thanks for the link.

As a fan of impressions I have to say Hader never really wowed me until now. His Vincent Price, James Carville etc are serviceable, but that Dafoe is truly amazing.
