United Homeless Organization - Ruining it for everyone!

Thread Starter
All the NYC Chewers have doubtlessly seen the guys in the red aprons, tables and water jugs panhandling on the streets day in/day out. Hell, we've probably even tossed our spare change into the water jugs because, hey, why not? They have a logo, employees, everything, of course the money is going to a shelter and other get off the street initiatives.

Well, it's fucking not!

Just in time for the winter. Me thinks charitable contributions will be going down.

The "U.H.O." Is it wrong that the first thing I thought of was the "U.N.O.W.H.O." from Naked Gun 2 1/2?

It's funny, because I never suspected that they were fraudulent, but that's probably the one charity in NY that I've never given money to in my 20 years in NY. No real reason why - I've given money to homeless organizations, homeless people, etc. - just not UHO. Just a weird coincidence is all.

When i read "United Homeless Organization" i pictured an army of militant hobos taking over the streets, I dont know why.
Still dick move by all involved, hope they get fucked.

If I were one of these UHO people, I'd sleep with one eye open from now on. Most homless people are suffering from mental illness, and this fraud might well rile them up enough to lash out at the theives who robbed them

Just admit it already, Lisa. You're really Spider-woman, and your Spider sense was tingling, wasn't it?

Heh! Well, mostly because I've only ever seen them in two places - on the subway, when I never seem to have either any money or anything smaller than a $10 or $20 on me. Or they're always parked in front of the Petco on Union Square - which always has an animal charity organization parked right next to the UHO guy, and also another animal charity inside where they do the pet adoptions. And I'm one of those chumps who, if I have a spare buck or two, I wind up giving it to the animals instead of the people.

When I was a community organizer a decade ago, my students and I researched homeless organizations to donate all the food/clothing we had collected during a drive. It took us one conversation with one of the UHO volunteers to know the whole thing was shady. It baffles me that the city is just now cracking down on them.

The best thing Diva could have done would have been to challenge the head of the UHO to an Electric Slide dance off, and thoroughly humiliate the lousy scam artist!

This means I won't be seeing the 350-pound guy always outside the Union Square Barnes & Noble anymore? Sad.

I can still make this happen.

Sell tickets, and donate the proceeds to a REAL charity.

Most of those coins and bills, Mr. Cuomo contended, end up in the pockets of those working the donation tables, who pay a daily fee to the group’s founder and president, Stephen Riley, and its director, Myra Walker, for the right to use the U.H.O. tables, jugs and aprons. The rest of the money, Mr. Cuomo charged, is kept by Mr. Riley and Ms. Walker, and has been used for a variety of expenses not related to U.H.O. business, including expenditures at Weightwatchers.com, Toys “R” Us, P. C. Richard, Bed, Bath & Beyond, and premium cable and electricity bills at their homes.
I've heard stories to this effect about the organization for years. I'm surprised more people in this thread didn't know this was a scam.
