Those Other MMOs

Anyone here play them besides WoW?

I'm not sure if I've said it here, but I've professed a fondness for LotRO and WAR-both being niche games that cater specifically to a crowd, who in turn play and love them back. Granted, WAR less so lately....But I really find it to have dark and cutting sense of humor, specially in the Dark Elf zones/quests.

LotRO I think is one of the finest MMOs in regards to quality-eagerly looking forward to Siege of Mirkwood coming out this December. Like one of its producers stated in an interview, the IP is evergreen and Turbine just does a really great job in realizing and expanding the world. There's a thread of storytelling throughout.

Of course, much attention has been paid to Aion and the upcoming KotOR MMO.

Was also wondering if there were any Star Wars Galaxies player out here? I played it Pre-CU/NGE, and there seems to be a network of SWG vets that tend to reminisce about 'the good old days'. It's still been my favorite MMO to date, taking the "Do everything!" aspect of UO in regards to the player driven crafting/economy and updated that with a relatively inventive skillbased combat system. I loved that you could be a viable noncombat class and still enjoy the game. Out of my many characters in that game, my favorite was the Twilek Master Dancer.

Though to be honest, somedays I want to try out Ultima Online agian for size, I remember really enjoying the game world they created.

I'm not playing any at the moment, but alot of the Chewers here have encouraged me to try out WoW. I'm probably going to do that once Cataclysm hits.

In my time, I've played SWG (pre NGE), D&D online, Guild Wars, Age of Conan, and (most recently) Champions Online. I got bored of SWG and D&D, and got pissed off at CO. GW and AoC both provided enjoyable gaming experiences that lasted for over a year each. I still plug into GW every once in a while to see what's going on, but it all has a 'been there, done that' thing for me. I'm enjoying my break.

Like you, I'm also waiting for KotOR to come out.

Tried a WOW trial, didnt really enjoy it.
I will give a few months trial to "Old Republic" and "The Secret World", because of their development teams previous history.

I'm playing D&D online cuz fuck it, it's free. Together with a pal, I occasionally do a dungeon. It's fun enough cuz it's an interesting world (Eberron), but it does do some shit that irks me.

Monsters are literally invisible to you until you've made your spot check (which the game rolls for you). I've had it happen to me that I was attacked by monsters that just jumped at me out of nowhere, and I've seen my buddy scout ahead and just start fighting nothing.

Arcane spell failure. That's right, if you're an arcane caster, you don't just have to overcome your target's possible spell resistance/hope he doesn't make his save, you also get to roll a percentile die to find out if the fucking spell doesn't fizzle out of your fingers with no effect. I guess that's not really the developers' fault, as it was inherent to D&D3.5, but fuck it, it sucked at the table and it sucks in a videogame.

But it's not really a dealbreaker cuz hey, it's free.

I have played (and I'll try to do this in order): Dark Sun Online, EQ1, DAOC, EQ2, Vanguard, and LoTRO. I love online games, but I never reach anywhere near like the end-game for any of them. I'm a terrible altaholic, and usually end up playing each race/class combo (or most anyway) and usually just enjoy somewhere around the middle of the timelines for most of them.

Most recently on LoTRO where I started putting some effort into crafting. I'll probably switch to EQ2 soon because I get a kick out of the Frostfell stuff.

I've dabbled in Ultima Online and Everquest but WOW was the first MMO that got me. After that I've played for up to four months, Dungeons and Dragons Online, Warhammer, Lord Of The Rings Online and Age Of Conan. I also played a couple of weeks of Anarchy Online and tried twice the free trial for EVE though neither of which managed to grab me.

I've dabbled in Dungeons and Dragons Online, but I've found that if you don't have a friend or group of folk to do the dungeons with, it's....not good. I guess that ties into the group oriented nature of the original-though I do love their puzzles, especially the sliding tiles deal. It seemed to require a bit more thought than most, and because it's in an MMO, fairly unique given the required effort.

Since the only people that know about LotRO are the ones I'm playing the game with, what do you think about LotRO? Where does it succeed, and where do you think it fails? I mean, we're prone to comparing everything to WoW based on its success.

I've been WoW-free and counting since July 15th. I think I might be proud of that

The thing with Ultima Online is that you can play the full game for free. You can also host your own shard, that's how prevalent the server software has become. There are three shards in Winnipeg alone, and enough players on each to feel like you can actually do stuff in the game without getting face-ganked every two minutes. I haven't played in years, but that shit made for an excellent alternative to WoW now and again.

I am looking at some of these newer games with great interest. Fallen Earth looks great, as does the upcoming Star Trek MMO (confidence issues with Cryptic aside). I am following Alganon too, as it is one of the first that allows you to script behaviour for your characters to do when you are offline (i.e. you can say "I am going to go train this dude for 4 days that I know I am not going to play"). It also has auction house consignments, meaning someone can commission you to craft something for them (so you can make lots of direct money from crafting).

LotRO basically takes every hint from WoW possible, gameplay wise, and just puts it in Middle Earth. If you like Tolkien, I guess that's great. Otherwise, it's really, really boring.

I have played just about all of them at one point or another. Here's how sad I am though, I played Planetside off and on for years (MMOFPS if you didn't know). That game was pretty much up there with SWG in how the development team ruined a game that was actually surviving pretty well (both Sony games). It went from a game that I loved playing with a buddy to a test to see how loyal you could be to a broken, buggy mess they created.

My friend and I broke away from it, eventually rejoined, eventually broke away again. And then both of us got excited because we got an email that Planetside 2 was in development. God it's sad.

You lost me there. SWG has, and always will be, CRAP. It's so, so bad it is entirely undefensible. A book should be written on how badly SOE and Lucas screwed up SWG.

I admittedly never got into WoW, but my favorite moments in gaming mostly come from the 2+ years I played UO. The updates published in the last few years ruined the game by making it like every other MMO, which killed the original's anarchic charm.

My favorite and best character had zero combat ability. All of his skills were in thievery, disarming weapons (to steal them of course), and hiding/stealth skills to escape with the loot. It's been almost 10 years, but I vividly remember particular episodes of taking someone's prized katana of vanquishing or whatever the hell, and the adrenaline rush of getting chased by a half-dozen warriors & mages on horseback that could freely kill me with no in-game penalties.

I have yet to find a game that gives me that same adrenaline rush. The modern MMO trend of consensual PvP that's purely about combat is a bit inflexible for my tastes.

I still play DAOC on and off after taking a five year break. I was surprised that my characters were still around. It's hard to recommend that game, though- because the small, dedicated remaining player base is so set in their ways that it's not that easy to pvp regularly with any sort of success. And the pvp is the only reason to play the game. I usually end up sitting in a keep with my archer trying to kill assassins looking to attack somebody just passing through. I find myself alt-tabbing a lot.

Still, if you can get good at your class and find some friends to pvp with regularly, I have yet to have a better MMO experience.

SWG had one of the best crafting systems I've ever seen, for what that's worth. It also had the best atmosphere I can remember in an MMO which was enough to blind me for a couple months and push me to level a toon to be strong enough to survive long enough to be a tourist on all the cool planets they'd made.

Sure, the "game" part of the game sucked, but it wasn't all bad.

I meant SWG before the fuckups by Sony and Lucas Ar-.....Oh.
That's what you meant too.

Hater.

But fair enough. Different strokes for different folks. I've been WoW free since July 15th and proud of it. While I can't argue the fact that LotRO has taken a lot of cues from WoW, I find the gameworld and the story quests, and the 'fluff' features to be well worth gameplay.

Here's a thought. I tried to do it, but I couldn't get into it. Anyone here try Second Life, ever?

Does Dungeon Fighter Online count as an MMO? I play that sometimes. Sidescrolling RPG beat em up with 16-bit graphics. Oh yeah.

I've played around with the beta and it's kind of terrible. Clunky graphics, faux WoW look to everything, nothing but grindy "Fetch X" quests. It looks like a highly-polished free MMO, not something I'd pay money for.
