Adam Green Cracks Open a HATCHET Sequel

I think that divorced from the hype, HATCHET is good. The problem is that to market these indie horror flicks, they have to rely on hyperbole like "The return of great American horror" or some shit and then everyone goes in with unrealistic expectations. You could get pissed about the marketing, but what else are they supposed to do? These pictures don't have a lot of money behind them, they need all the hype they can get.

At the end of the day there's nothing groundbreaking about HATCHET, but it's a fun, well made little slasher that's not a waste of your time.

At first I thought they were going to do a movie based on the Newberry Award Winning Novel

That's a great book.

I am a little weary of any horror movie hype around here, unfortuantely, but I'll check it out. Devin's hype for TRICK OR TREAT turned out to be spot on accurate, but unfortunately his love of FRIDAY THE 13th left me puzzled. As far as I could tell, it was a stupid, boring, badly acted waste of time .

I thought the new FRIDAY was profoundly lame. TRICK R TREAT was delightful. HATCHET is somewhere in between. I disliked the film when I first saw it, but I recently caught it again as part of a horror triple feature around Halloween, and enjoyed it a bit more the second time around (once the hype and expectations were gone).

It is not an amazing horror film. For one it's not even remotely scary or creepy, and whereas TRICK R TREAT was a throwback tonally, HATCHET is an homage-throwback. So it feels a bit trite and unoriginal.

But it's got some fun stuff in it. And if one loves horror movies for a good kill, the film certainly has some excellently gory ones.

What exactly is Hatchet supposed to be a throwback to, the halcyon days of the Sci-Fi original movie? It looks and feels nothing like an 80's slasher movie.

I... I agree with this. Hatchet plays like it's the product of the Telephone Game. Somebody who's a huge '80s slasher filmfan whispers the basic plot of a slasher in the ear of somebody else who whispers that basic plot into somebody else's ear and on and on ad nauseum. The last person in that line scripts a slasher movie premised upon what they heard whispered. End result? Hatchet.

"It's finally happening," Green enthused. "It's going to have double the body count and Anchor Bay is being cool enough to allow me to make the sequel I want to make."

Awesome. Now if he manages to sneak in a modicum of tension and humor that actually works, he might make something approaching watchable, certainly a step up from the original film.

Please tell me you meant to say "WARY". I mean, Jesus H. Christ, you DO realize this is the horror focused portion of the CHUD boards, don't you? Hype for horror? There? Who'd'a thunk it?

I'm guessing it's because most of the movies that get "hyped" in the fan community usually turn out to be atrocious

I'm guessing basic spelling error.
