Macy's Parade

I always love having this on in the background while I'm cooking. Today is no exception. The odd amalgam of high school bands, balloons, and tv and broadway stars singing the lamest possible show tunes never fails to entertain. Ahh, nostalgia.

I had no idea Jimmy Fallon had a band.

Don't forget about the ultra-gay top 40 pop songs! It got to the point where we just turned on the NFL Network and watched a Thanksgiving game from 1993.

There is a pretty good article over at the AV Club today about the Macy's Parade and its ties to pop culture ephemera, and it features some fun clips of parades past. It can be found here.

I actually went down there for the first time since I was a kid, and got terrified by Woody Woodpecker (when I was a kid, not today). Fun time, and even though it was crowded it wasn't too insane. And thankfully since most children have no stamina everyone kept leaving and we kept steadily getting closer to the street till we were almost right in it.

Closest I got when I lived in Manhattan was about two or three blocks away, where we could just barely see the balloons from the bar window. The stuff we saw live was about an hour behind what was showing on the bar tv.

We used to go freeze our ass off from '75-'79 and hate life in Manhattan. I don't miss it. In fact, I'm more curmudgeonly about this parade than any non-church related holiday stalwart. For some reason I have massive hate for it. Probably because I'm crap.

Ah, shit. It wasn't the Dolphins/Cowboys game in the snow, was it? Fat stupid Leon Lett.

Nick is going to be visited by the three spirits tonight... one of them will definitely be Underdog. That's all I know.

It's a horrorshow of commercialism and children's programming (DaveB actually yelled at the sight of Shrek the Musical), but you have to watch it. I was surprised to find out how long the route is - guess I'd never thought about it before.

Please. Thought the Fallon/Roots bit was a highlight. Not that it's hard to be a highlight. The Shrek bit was fairly awful. But it came after like three other musical variety horror jams. I watched way too much of it. What about the band Boys Like Girls? Why did my eyes and ears go there?

Yo Gabba Gabba is the craziest shit I've ever seen. Party in my tummy!!!

My college Marching band, which I was a member of the trumpet section in 99 was in the parade this year. They sounded great, but I felt pretty sorry for them when Al Roker announced them (correctly) as Towson University, but the text on the screen announced them as Towson High School. D'oh.

By the by, are people ACTUALLY going to see "Shrek: The Musical"?

the Jimmy Fallon float/segment was hilarious. Loved that he was singing "Holiday Road" from the Vacation movies.

"[fill in blank]...now available on Blu-ray and DVD!"

I'm not sure how many times I heard that... but yea, it was like one loud, overlong commercial. My kids were more interested in the dog show that followed.

Thanksgiving just isn't complete without a heartfelt song from Jane Krakowski.

What was funny about that song is that it's the same kind of bland, look-at-me crap that her character would sing on 30 Rock.
