My reaction? Scary

I don't blame the Secret Service, they must be exausted after nearly 3 years of constant work. I blame the Sarah Palin's of the world for letting our security get stretched this thin.

You must be an optimist. I believe that more would wish to kill the first black president than Sarah Palin.

I've spoken about this before on anohter thread.

Palin, Beck and the rest stir up the crazies, increasing the number of threats to the President. Each and every threat must be investigated. The secret service is in the middle of a funding crisis, as has been reported. Agents are missing the usually mandatory vacations and retraining they're supposed to regularly undergo. So when the GOP talks about Obama as a "threat to humanity", they're directly adding to the burden on an overstretched agency due to all the nuts who will act out (requiring agents to deal with).

I have to imagine the cause of the party crasher snafu had to do with sleep deprivation, people without proper training, ETC.

They've had to protect Obama since March 07, full time. This is a highly unusual move, and they had to change the law to allow for protection so early. Between protecting him, Hilary, Bush all at the same time, and now 11 months of constant threats (real or fake) to President Obama, they are clearly not operating at 100%. Anyone who knowingly stirs up the elements that will contribute to this dangerous situation is someone I hold reponsible for any security issues.

The SS are the best trained armed guards in the world. When they fuck up, I have to think they are being pressured by outside forces, not that they are getting lazy

Kate, every administration has to deal with a huge level of crazies, blaming the left or the right is a mute point. It was sloppy work by the Secret Service.

I guess to make my point the Secret Service should be protecting the president 24/7

I just wish they hadn't done that when a head of state from a foreign country is in attendance.

Kate, I don't see the connection between Sarah Palin and these two, who were obviously trying to make some headlines (any surprise that they're on a reality show?). If anyone, I blame the Balloon Boy and his family.

No connection between Palin and the idiots (ok, maybe ONE connection), there is a connection between Palin purposely riling up the crazies and racists during the campaign (and continuing to do so to this very day) and the increased strain on the secret service

Why does that article keep referring to "the jihadist far left"? The what now? Jihadists are about as conservative as you can get, they're just not American conservatives.

Once you go far enough around the spectrum, the far right (fascism) and left (communism) become identical. I think he wasn't talking about that though, and simply made a mistake

I blame Obama and this whole cult-of-celebrity thing he has inspired. Obama is the most famous person in the world. Everyone wants to be famous like Obama. Everytime he flashed that brilliant smile or led the crowds in chanting "Yes, we can!" during the campaign, his fame grew. And his loyal acolytes want to be a part of that fame. They are no longer content in basking in his glow. They want to glow themselves like the biggest celebrity in the world. They want to be the change they have been waiting for. So, you get a couple of Obama fans who are trying to get on a Bravo reality show so they can get famous like their idol. They see an opportunity to sneak into a state dinner, knowing everyone will see them (on TV!) rubbing elbows with the world's biggest star, not to mention the rich, powerful, intelligent, and Joe Biden. What else could they do but crash, even if they had to climb over the bodies of the entire cast of MTV's The Hills to do it? We are now a nation of fame-whores. This is the world Barack built.

See, PK, it sounds just as stupid and insane when I do it.

I have no idea what you're talking about. My position on how the riled up right has weakened the SS is backed up by the NY Times and other news sources. It's neither "stupid" nor "insane"

I can kinda see where Kate is going with it. I don't know if I'd put it as a Sarah Palin type, but it seems to be like what happened with O'Reilly and George Tiller. You build up someone as a bad guy, someone that you say is out there killing or whatever, you're basically asking for someone to take that next step and try to take that person out.

In Obama's case, I can certainly see that the proclamations from some loonies about how he's secretly going to put them in camps, or set up death panels, or whatever would get them to plan something similar to what happened with Scott Roeder killing Dr. Tiller. So yeah, I can see that the Secret Service would be getting stretched thin as a result of an increase in threats because of what these types are saying.

The O'Reillys of the world aren't directly responsible, but they're riling people up with outrageous claims and painting certain individuals as villains. It's not a surprise what results.
Obama was getting more death threats than any other recent Presidential candidate, and the threats only increased once he won the election.

There is no way that O'Reilly, Limbaugh etc are not exacerbating this and thus causing strain on the Secret Service.

But Obama can't muzzle the media without "verifying" the fears of the lunatic Right. So he's stuck.

This makes it sound like you would be fine with if only it wouldn't give a few douchebags some sick satisfaction. As if there aren't plenty of other reasons it would be a horrible idea.

...Except that has nothing to do with what we're talking about. These guys were fame-hungry. They would have done this, given the opportunity, no matter who was in the White House.

I actually wonder if they haven't done Obama a huge favour by exposing the problems with their security in such a benign way. With any luck there'll be a shakeup.

By the way, why IS the Secret Service stretched so thin? Is it really that hard for an agency who works directly for, and is crucial to the safety of, the president (and everyone else with power in Washington) to say "we need more money and resources?"

If my post read that way I apologize. I do think it completely fair and normal (and legal) to call the Wing Nuts on their Wing Nuttery. Happily the Administration has been doing that of late.

The problem is, there is no one in the GOP or Conservative movement policing their own. Consider that, in the 1950's William F Buckley ran the John Birchers out of National Review, and out of serious political dialogue. This despite many similarities in philosophy.

There is no one around today to perform the same service: Buckley's son was driven from the magazine his father founded by the loons.

And remember, we are talking about people who make millions of dollars advocating violence against the President of the United States and the Federal Government in general. Don't get all holy about the First Amendment when it is so blatantly being abused. The British Government has a long tradition of tolerating all kinds of speech, but when the need arises they can tell their media to tone things down of even bury stories if they threaten the national interest.

Uh, that's actually what Kate's point was though. The increase in threats for Obama has lead to decreased effectiveness in the Secret Service, allowing this couple to get in. I don't know if that's true or not, but it could be.

She wasn't making a connection between the couple and Palin whoring for publicity.
Well that's all well and good, but I can't very well agree with PK, can I?

Yeah yeah. We know what would happen. Human sacrifice, dogs and cats living together...mass hysteria.

This morning I was reminded by my mother that my Grandmother once did something similar. She was at the WH for a reception (Clinton years), and then wandered off and ended up encountering Clinton. As I told my mom though, Grandma had been cleared for the WH and background checks had been preformed. So, even though she was able to wander then too, there was no danger unlike the present situation.
