25th Anniversary Rock N Roll Hall of Fame Concert on HBO

Anybody else gonna watch?

Metallica teaming up with Lou Reed and Ray Davies is something I can't miss!

The Boss and Fogerty. Jeff Beck & Stevie.

Who keeps inviting Billy Joel?

Don't have HBO right now, so I'll probably wait for the inevitable DVD. Certainly, there are some fun pairings (though I completely agree with you on Joel-- WTF was he doing soiling the McCartney show the other night?).

U2, Mick Jagger, and the Black Eyed Peas goes down into bizarro land territory. But I've been digging the show. It's great to see real musicians play instead of prepackaged pop stars that usually get shoved down our throats.

Yeah, I'm digging.

Stevie was kind of so-so, untill "Superstition". Hard to mess that up. Jeff Beck came in and blazed.

The Metallica pairings were sort of embarrassing. The sludging up of "Sweet Jane" was awful. However i was loling at Hetfield's exhuberent singing of the chorus to n"All Day And all of the Night".

Cranky grandpa Jerry Lee Lewis (very slowly) kicking over the piano bench was a highlight.

I thought Fergie was the best thing about the uninspired "Gimme Shelter" cover. (A hilarious moment: when she first struts over to Jagger and starts shakin that ass, Mick does this googly-eyed old man leer that had me rolling)

Of all the acts, I think U2 suffered the most in sharing the stage with legends; they came off bland and limp next to Bruce and the boys, Patti Smith, and even Mick. (The awkward bromance of “Stuck in a Moment You Can’t Get Out Of” won't be making Bowie jealous) Bruce was the life of the party. He went all out. He was having a blast and it was infectous. Bono was the guy you remember liking, but now wish would leave.

Two separate sentences. You did see the "bizarro" part of the first sentence, right?

Is it just me, or was Jeff Beck's instrumental "A Day In The Life" all kinds of awesome?

Sting, please never sing "People Get Ready" ever, ever again!

So Beck has forgiven Stevie for torpedoing his shot at the charts with "Superstition"?

I guess all is forgiven between Patti and Bono, too!

I didn't see this concert, but I've seen Beck perform this before, and it's incredible.

One of the things I noticed about Springsteen last night, was how he made every performer who shared the stage with him, from Patti Smith to Sam Moore to Darleen Love to Billy Joel, feel equally important and his peer. He actually called the performance with Billy Joel a summit meeting. Talk about a lack of ego!

The finale where everybody came out and he led them in Jackie Wilson's "Higher, Higher" was transcendent.

Ha. I thought it was something new he cooked up!

He was a definite highlight. Only thing missing was Rod showing up.

The mini-set with Buddy Guy and Billy Gibbons was like blast of uncut cocaine after U2 and Sting.

Yeah, I was just taking the piss.

This has just started playing tonight here in Oz, the full four hours and we're only at the start with Crosby, Stills and Nash - is it worth sticking around for?

Okay, had to go out to dinner and now I've come back to Simon and Garfunkel, leading into Aretha Franklin.

Pretty fucking hard to maintain my trademark cynicism in the face of that.

I've never seen Paul Simon move like that before. I don't want to see it again.
Okay, U2, Bruce Springsteen AND Patti Smith performing Because The Night? God-damn.

Yeah, that cover of Gimmie Shelter was painful.

I'm kind of confused as to why they couldn't get other members of Velvet Underground or The Kinks. Sweet Jane with Metallica?

I don't know much about the interpersonal relations of the surviving Velvets, but I do know that the prospect of putting any two members of The Kinks into the same room invites friction, to say the least.

Yeah, and I think John Cale is in one of his "fuck Lou" periods.

When the Rock Hall came to Cleveland in the late 90s, Lou did Sweet Jane with Sonic Youth. That was amazing.

That would have been incredible.

I believe that concert is on DVD. It is pretty fantastic.

Curious, does anyone know the deal with the H.I.V. positive shirt Annie Lennox was wearing during her duet with Aretha? I was caught off guard by that. A solidarity thing or is she sick?
It's a pet advocacy of hers...

Quote:
We are delight to announce that Annie Lennox will headline an historic rally in downtown Vienna on 20 July 2010. The march and rally will feature a memorable live musical performance by Annie and provide an opportunity for people to demonstrate their commitment to protecting human rights and stopping the spread of HIV.
The event will consist of a 30-minute peaceful march in downtown Vienna to a public rally with government leaders, human rights and AIDS advocates, and people affected by HIV. Following the speeches, Annie Lennox will give a special presentation of her SING Campaign, which will include a musical performance and some short films highlighting the issues that surround HIV and AIDS.

Aretha and Annie was pretty special too I have to say. Overall really enjoyed the concert.
