Mad Men: The Videogame (how is this going to work?)

Kinda surprised to see this one coming down the pipe. Not sure how enthused I am about the gameplay, but more stories from one of my favorite shows is always appreciated.

We had a chance to have a lengthy conversation with Matthew Weiner, creater, writer, and director for the outstanding television series Mad Men (seriously, if you haven't watched it, give it a look) about an upcoming game set in the universe of advertising agency Sterling & Cooper. For those who are unaware of the show (shame on you), it's based on the advertising world of the 1960's, and set in Manhattan. There have been rumors of an Activision produced game based on the series for about a year, but nothing concrete. The full text of the conversation will be available next week, but we wanted to get some details to you now.

Matt indicated that the game is set in the period between seasons two and three. Kind of an interesting tactic to take, but I'm sure they don't want to impact future episodes. Matt indicated that due to timing concerns they had to cut a lot of sub-plots from season three, for example Harry Crane's development of the television division at Sterling Cooper (trust me, this stuff is a lot more interesting than it sounds). The entire cast will be appearing in the game with the exception of January Jones. She will be replaced by Jennifer Hale. A shame the extremely attractive Ms. Jones won't be voicing her character, but you may remember Jennifer Hale as Bastila from the Knights of the Old Republic series. Additionally, the series protagonist ... some would say anti-hero ... Don Draper will spend much of the game attempting to prevent one of his many affairs from torpedoing both his home and professional life.

Details on the actual gameplay were a bit more sketchy. As far as we can tell, there may not be any actual movement in the game, except to select destinations and items to interact with. Given that the show has had maybe one punch thrown in thirty-nine episodes, I think we can expect Heavy-Rain style QTE sequences and Metal Gear Solid 4 length cut scenes. He did briefly say that selecting the right ideas to promote at the right time would be crucial for the client "pitch meetings," and that matching appropriate television shows for clients would form a not insignificant portion of the gameplay.

Matt was extremely vague about certain story and gameplay elements, but he did absolutely mention that the smoking and drinking were part of the era and the tone of the show. He promised there would be dedicated buttons for the character you were controlling at the time (if we get to play as Salvatore Romano, expect the media circus to be intense over his likely storyline) to have them engage in drinking and smoking on-the-fly, whenever you choose. However, he also said "the repercussions for doing this at inappropriate times, or drinking too much, would be severe." Then again, if you've seen the show, there doesn't appear to be a wrong time to pour a drink or light one up.

More details coming soon.

What I'd give for this to be a Sandbox style game where I get to run around New York as Don Draper.

Could be cool if it was an adventure game.

This has to be bullshit.

No, I really expect this kind of wanton dumbfuckery from game companies now.

All that would consist of is Don running away any time there's trouble.

You really could make a good game out of a show like this, but I doubt anyone's going to try too hard. Mad Men should be an M-rated Sims-esque title where you can completely mess with these character's lives to create an alternate history. You start as the new ad guy at the agency, and can end up as Don Draper's best bud and wingman, or end up seducing and stealing his wife (even turning him in as a deserter), or any of numerous other plot directions depending on who you befriend and how good you are at your job...

You damn well know this will become a first person shooter. Don't ask me how.

I could almost see this as a straight-up business simulation like Zoo Tycoon or something, where you build Sterling-Cooper from the ground up and go after clients like Lucky Strikes. Doesn't need any voiceovers or animated Drapers, though.

Either that or make it into Leisure Suit Sterling.

Would knowing the show or history help then?

Pitch:

A) Smoking is safe.
B) Other things are dangerous too.
C) It's toasted.
D) Freeze up and then run away.
