Now that the comics industry has overtaken film, its outstanding writers are starting to step up to the biopic bar. Subversive brainiac Grant Morrison is up next, with a dedicated documentary due in time for next year’s Comic-Con International. A new documentary will map the adventures of counterculture comics hero Grant Morrison.

“He has an uncanny ability to tell stories that are both accessible and progressively avant-garde,” explained indie director Patrick Meaney, whose untitled Grant Morrison documentary, previewed in the exclusive clips above and below, will analyze the writer’s storied run for Marvel and DC Comics on standout titles like The Invisibles, X-Men and Final Crisis as well as more esoteric series like The Filth and Flex Mentallo.

The relative obscurity of the latter two may not last long, as Hollywood roots around for comic books to follow those from Alan Moore and Frank Miller into cinematic life.

I'd really like to see a documentary on Morrison like that Alan Moore one that was just two hours of him talking at the camera about whatever he wanted. That was really, really low budget and wound up being immensely enjoyable. Morrison's one of the few writers who I would also like "director's commentary" on the creation and interpretation of his comics for.

If they can somehow work conspiracy theories, a goth chick, and nanotechnology into the narrative, that would be ace.

A documentary is not a biopic.

Wouldn't mind seeing this. Hopefully it includes lots of Grant Morrison on drugs stories.

Best news I've heard today.

You mean to hear about his background and life (which I know nothing about) or just to hear him talk for two hours?

I think his personal life was pretty tame for a guy who grew up during the Troubles. He's always said that. Didn't grow up in Belfast or the like.

One guy I'd like is Howard Chaykin. Not only to hear about the criminally unrecognized American Flagg, but his early work, on Star Wars, Dominic Fortune, Fritz Leiber's work, honing his craft alongside Frank Miller, how he's broken into the European comic scene. The guy's one of the most innovative folks in the history of comicdom, respected and/or feared by his peers, but pretty much all you hear from the current comic-reading generation is how much his art sucks in Blade or Punisher.

The FX budget is going to be huge.
I still would pay good money for a Jack Kirby biopic movie.
As for comic book creator documentaries, I'd love to see one on John Ostrander or Jim Steranko.

That would be the Warren Ellis Biopic. With an hour or so about cell phones.
