I am kind of surprised that there isn't already a thread in this section on the Big G. Anyway, I thought it might be fun to discuss the entries in this long running franchise and the other films connected to it. What are your favorite? Which entries do you dislike? Which eras do you prefer? Favorite monsters? Favorite moments? What would you like to see done with the series when Toho revives it again in a few years or from the supposed 2nd attempt at an American version on the horizon?

55 years of cinematic historic for the guy seems like a ripe topic for a thread around here and I know I can't be the only one who still loves the hell out of this character. Let it begin!

I'll admit i love all of them,even the really terrible ones.These were the movies that i'd catch on Saturday afternoon as a kid and just loved them.I got a few of them on DVD and let my 4 year old watch them and she loves them too.The MST3K episode with Godzilla and Jet Jaguar is one of the best episodes ever.

I love all the REAL Godzilla movies, i.e. the ones created in Japan by Toho.

DVD and Blue Ray esp are very cruel to the old school FX (you can really see the wires even in the 2000 era films) but there is just a goofy apocalyptic adventure vibe to these films that make them irresistible.

Same here. I absolutely love the hell out of them, particularly the classic-era ones. I own almost all of them in one form or another and fully intend on showing them to my future children someday.

I have actually been rewatching them recently, which is a strong component of why I was compelled to start this thread. I'm concurrently watching the Showa and Millennium era films...........mainly due to the fact that I love the former and haven't seen much of the latter. On the whole, while still enjoyable, I don't like the newer ones anywhere near as much as the other two eras. They contain horrible CGI, a complete lack of any continuity between installments, and a lot of bad direction in terms of the monster sequences. I was pretty disappointed by most of them. It is kind of sad to think that on the whole it was done much better in the '60s & '70s (as well as the '90s from what I remember).

Ahh! I didn't check that section and it didn't pop up on the search. I'll have to read through it when I have more time. Oh well, I guess it won't hurt to have a Godzilla-centric thread over here.

The Millennium series highlights are Godzilla, Mothra, King Ghidora, All monsters Attack , and Godzilla, Tokyo SOS.

The idea with the Millennium series was to "re-imagine" Godzilla in every film, except that there IS continuity between Millennium Godzilla Vs MechaGodzilla and Godzilla: Tokyo SOS.

The conceit that scientists could take the first Godzilla's bones and make them the basis for a potentially more-Monstrous monster was pretty damn cool.

I am a...Huuuuuuuuuuuuge fan of the...Showa era of...Godzilla films. My friends and I used to watch them every saturday morning, on...WOR ch 9. The one other that I enjoy is...Ryuhei Kitamura's Godzilla Final Wars. I even enjoyed the...Hanna Barbara Godzilla cartoon.

I recently re-watched the one where Godzilla fights the Sludge Monster (or some shit like that) and man, lemme tell you: that movie's an acid trip. I mean that was one of the most bizarre Godzillas I've ever scene. Looking back the message of the movie was less "Protect the environtment" then "You won't be able to pollute because you'll be to busy taking LSD"

Smog Monster( Sorry, but it will always be Smog Monster and not Hedora to me) is my fav Godzilla movie. I love it without any irony at all.

I had a VHS tape of Godzilla vs. Megalon that I wore out when I was a kid. Not a very good Godzilla movie but it has a special place in my heart for the nostalgia factor. I also managed to track down the MSTK3000 episode which was hilarious.

I also own most of the Millenium Era flicks and enjoyed them all except for Final Wars which I found to be pretty weak IMO.

Godzilla vs the Smog Monster is the first and only Godzilla Art Film. Weird, music and visuals, the cartoon "interludes" and quirky characters belong in a 1990s indie film, but instead appeared in 1969!

Godzilla vs Megalon was one of the first films I saw in an ole timey Drive in Theater, (2nd feature? Giant Spider Invasion! With the Skipper!)

I'm lucky enough to have a Drive-in theater close by and in the summer they show old monster movies in midnight shows,it is fucking amazing.They have even shown a few old Godzilla movies in the past.I've gotten a cooler full of snacks and just hung out there until dawn more times than i can count.

I encourage even the most casual Godzilla fan to purchase the book Godzilla on My Mind by William Tsutsui. It's the best book on the King of the Monsters and covers its history, fandom, effects on pop culture, and even its place in Japan's own history.

LeRolls, Godzilla Vs Megalon is a...classic. JetJaguar is all kinds of...Awesome. I remember watching...Godzilla vs Megalon again in college, and one of my friends called another...Megalon. He did not take to being called...Megalon, well at all.

Godzilla Vs Gigan AKA Godzilla on Monster Island. In the US version they speak!

I like the book Godzilla on my Mind, but the author is too apologetic about his fandom. I prefer "The Big G: Hollywood's most famous Mon-Star" even though it was published before Godzilla 2000

I've been meaning to pick up both of those books. I'll probably get around to it after Christmas. Anyway, here are my shorthand reactions to the films as I have been rewatching them. I am watching both the Showa and the Millennium eras simultaneously. While I have seen almost all of the Showa & Heisei films, I have not seen any of the Millennium ones previously....


Showa:
Godzilla - Classic!
Godzilla Raids Again - Solid, better than I remembered, but not as entertaining as the others.
King Kong vs. Godzilla - A shitty Kong suit and weird American newscast footage aside, this one is still a classic in my eyes.
Godzilla vs. Mothra - Classic!
Ghidorah: The Three-Headed Monster - Another all-time favorite of mine, in spite of its flaws.
Invasion of the Astro-Monster - I know many consider this one superior to the previous, but I just don't love it as much. Still a great entry though.
Godzilla vs. the Sea Monster - Silly as hell and pretty damn cheap looking, but still contains a good bit of fun. Probably the worst Godzilla suit so far in this era.
Son of Godzilla - My reaction to rewatching this is pretty much the same as the film before it, although I think I prefer this one. I always get a kick out of Minilla/Minya, no matter how ridiculous he is.
Destroy All Monsters - Coming Soon!
All Monsters Attack - Coming Soon!


Millennium:
Godzilla 2000 - Love the suit design (despite its obvious performance issues). Interesting story and concept, but the horrible CGI is a definite hindrance on my enjoyment.
Godzilla vs. Megaguiras - My reaction is virtually the same as the previous film, with a few more complaints. The direction and lighting of the monster scenes just killed me in this one, particularly the slow motion shots. Bad! Bad! Definitely my least favorite of this era so far.
GMK: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack - The best of this era thus far, although I don't particularly like the Godzilla suit design. While closer to the previous eras, the massive thighs and pot belly make Godzilla look like a trailer-park beer-swilling version of his former self. CGI is still a slight issue, but put to way better use here and with improved graphics. Still, a very well made installment.

Destroy All Monsters (1968) - The monster action is fun, but the rest is silly as hell. A very enjoyable film, but not one of my favorites.

Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla (2002) - I absolutely loved this one. GMK was great, but this is now my current favorite of the Millennium era. Most interesting of all is that it is from the same director as Megaguirus, my least favorite entry in this era. Everything that was wrong with Megaguirus was done right this time around and it was an absolute blast from start to finish. After the first two in this ear, I was actually dreading watching the rest of them. Now after GMK and this, I can't wait to watch the final two entries.

Has anyone purchased the recent blu-ray release of the original Godzilla film? I loved the special edition that Classic Media put out on standard DVD release, but I have been reading some troublesome comments about the BR version. I'm just wondering how true they are.

It was my understanding that all the Godzilla games pretty much sucked. If you want a good giant monsters versus game then check out War of the Monsters. Now that was a fun game.

All Monsters Attack (1969) - Not as horrible as I remember, but it is still easily my least favor G-film to date. Such a weird entry in the franchise as well.

Godzilla vs. Hedorah (1971) - I had never seen this one before until now and what a trip (literally!) it is. Wow. That is really all that can be said to describe it. Hedorah bonging smokestacks! Godzilla flying! The crazy score! The random animated interludes! Talk about an instant cult classic.

Godzilla vs. Gigan (1972) - This was always a childhood favorite of mine and unforunately the first of them to dwindle my love during my current reviewings of the series. I still have a blast watching it, but not as much as a used to.

Godzilla vs. Megalon (1973) - I like this one a lot more than most due to how crazy it is, but I would never rank it with one of the best. I've never seen the MST3K version, but I certainly plan on tracking it down online now that I have rewatched it.


Next up is the Mechagodzilla duology that closes out the Showa era. I can't wait to see them again, as I loved the hell out of both when I was younger........particularly the first one.

Wow, I completely forgot about this thread.  When I get around to it, I'll post an updated list of my opinions.....................and hopefully I'll burn through the Heisei flicks (which I didn't do two years ago) in the near future and add them as well.

 

BTW, I'm really looking forward to seeing what Legendary Pictures has in store for us with the new American version.

Screw waiting....

 

 

Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla (1974) - Classic.  'Nuff said.  Screw you if you disagree!  This is absolutely one of my favorite (if not my actual favorite) Godzilla films.

 

Terror of Mechagodzilla (1975) - Great follow-up with a more serious tone.  Not as good as the previous one, but still one of the better films of this era and a nice one to end on.

 

Godzilla: Tokyo SOS (2003) - Loved it, though not as much as the previous entry.  This series greatly improved as it grew.

 

Godzilla: Final Wars (2004) - A riot of a good time.  It's not perfect by any stretch of the imagination, but it's so much fun that I can overlook the evident flaws (and there are many).  Not a bad way to end the era and I really look forward to Toho's return to the franchise.  Until then, let's hope the new American version is solid.

Word to liking the 60's/70's/early 90's films a lot better than some of the later ones.  I think my favorite suit design is the one from Godzilla '85, and my favorite film is Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah.  The crazy time travel/economic armageddon plotline ("Japan will buy up nations!") is classic.

 

I was never a fan of the G-2000 era suit design.  Too... amphibious, for my taste.

Can't believe I never looked for a Godzilla thread.

 

Two books that are worth tracking down, though sadly out of print:

 

Monsters Are Attacking Tokyo: (this one could really use an updated second edition)

 

Eiji Tsuburaya: Master of Monsters: Defending the Earth with Ultraman and Godzilla

 

Haven't watched any of the Godzilla or Gamera movies in a while, apart from the MST3K versions, which I watch all together to often.

Gotta put in a good word for Godzilla Vs. Destroyah and Godzilla Vs. Space Godzilla. They are included on one DVD for your convenience!

 

Destroyah starts with a totally badass sequence of Godzilla, out of control and actually in the process of melting down, attacking Hong Kong. The sequence is only slightly marred by the scenes of shoppers happily going about their business as Godzilla rampages through the city! And the Destroyah monster(s) are really menacing.  It also features

THE DEATH OF GODZILLA!

 

Space Godzilla  is the 90's equivalent to Godzilla Vs. the Smog Monster. You watch it and you wonder how in the hell this was actually released in theaters by a major studio. I mean some of the FX look like some kid made them in his parent's garage. (see esp the "exciting" Duel in the Asteroids by Moguera and Space Godzilla! But with the proper amount of alcohol coursing through your system this flic is a great time. Also the design of Space Godzilla is really cool.

I know it's crap, but I love Godzilla vs. Megalon.  Megalon is a pretty great kaiju, and how can you not love the Big G's tail slide attack?

 

For the newer films, I love Godzilla and Mothra: Battle for Earth.  There's a sequence where Godzilla and Battra both attack a ship carrying Mothra's egg that is just pure kaiju crack.

My favorite fun moment from a Godzilla film would be during Godzilla 1985 when the leader  of the humans (government/military?) when told of a Godzilla sighting says 'But how do we know the creature will attack Tokyo?'

Have you EVER seen Godzilla and he DIDN'T attack the city?!?

Godzilla=massive collateral damage!

My daughter and I logged quite a few hours throwing buildings at each other in Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee for the Gamecube.

A nostalgic fave.

How's the quality on the the newish Terror of Mechagodzilla DVD?  It's the subtitled Japanese version, correct?

Hm well the DVD I have is a couple years old now, but yes does include the original Japanese w subtitles.


EDITED TO ADD: as do all the recent Toho approved releases. Hope they also release Godzilla Vs. Biolante, which is inexplicably not available, and a Blu Ray of Godzilla 2000 with the original Japanese.

A complete cut of Biolante would be spiffy.  I wonder if the Godzilla-in-the-flowers footage exists anywhere?  The japanese cut is supposed to make more sense too, the same with Terror of Mechagodzilla (where the cyborg-daughter's suicide was cut in the american version).

 

As far as I know, the only cut to Godzilla 2000 was several minutes (seriously) of helicopters and tanks rolling out and shooting Godzilla.  I would like to know what the actual line is at the end of the film?

The Japanese version of Terror of MechaGodzilla does indeed include the scenes you are asking about.

I'm pretty satisfied with the DVD release from years back.  But I still don't have a blu ray player.

 

Any buzz from the new Godzilla movie?  Has it even started production (imdb says no, but they say lots of things)?

Nope, still being written.  A new screenwriter came onto the project back in the fall.  Best guess?  If I had to guess, I'd bank on it hitting theaters in Summer 2014.  If they get things together in time, it COULD have a 2013 release, but since 2014 will be the character's 60th anniversary....................well, that just seems far more likely.  Waiting two more years blows, but if it ensures that the product is good, then so be it.

Indeed.

 

I've been trying to figure out where I want to see the franchise go from here.  Hollywood does massive destruction spectacles in their sleep, we've all seen plenty, I personally, am bored with them, but that may just be because the last few I've seen have felt so rote and heartless (2012, Transformers sequels).

 

We're on the anniversary of the 2011 Tōhoku disaster and Fukishima meltdown.  That makes me feel like getting this Godzilla 'right' is more important then ever.

 

I really need to watch Monsters too.
