This would be funny if it wasn't true.

Power companies having the ability to remotely monitor your power usage? More worrying is the fact it gives them the ability to ration your usage.

So, for example; if they deem you have used too much electricity you could come home to a house full of gone off food because they shut your power off while you were on holiday.

Or more seriously, if (as mentioned in the article) there is a software fault which turns your gas on you could come back to no house at all.

Roll on the election so I get rid of these morons.

What an alarmist article with no facts to back it up. I'm actually working on this right now, so not sure how much I can disclose, but damn.

The BBC is a unsuprsingly more mesured in it's reporting.

I'm still not keen on the idea, it's going to cost a fortune to install and mantain.

So you're voting conservative then, Savage? Yeah, I'm sure that'll patch everything up nicely.

I can't imagine any reason why a utility would want homes to use less of their product unless the homeowners aren't paying the bills. And if they aren't paying the bills, the utility can already cut them off. When rolling black- or brownouts are necessary (presuming they're ever necessary) the means to do this without any hypothetical invasions of privacy already exist. I do not fear Big Brother. I don't even believe in Big Brother.

What I don't like is this: "They will be able to recoup the cost from customers through higher bills." Ah. So you're going to charge customers the cost of installations they didn't ask for, installations that will result in job losses. Bugger off.
