The next generation of Anime fans

In my local bookstore today I saw an overweight goth girl in the Manga section as I was looking at the Blu-Ray release of Ghost in the Shell. Not thinking twice, I soon realized she wasn't the only one. In fact they were all overweight goth girls sporting ironic T-shirts with phrases such as "I don't have ADD I just - SQUIRREL!" and Naruto jackets (which was admittedly pretty badass up until after the "Zabuza" arc when it stopped making any. fucking. sense.)

Anyway, these girls were chatting amongst themselves and I did my best to ignore them and focus on my Blu-Ray when a couple more walked in. But these were not the gothic kids, these were the cosplayers, decked out in full costume. No conventions, no events, they were just walking around town in full cosplay. (I don't cosplay myself but hold nothing against people that do in moderation)

So just on a whim I asked
"Can any of you sell me on this Blu-Ray of Akira?"
"Akira? Kinda old don'tcha think? Naruto is better."
That's right, she just badmouthed Akira. AH-KEE-RUH!
So apparently this isn't really an isolated incident and this has basically what the Japanophile subculture has deteriorated to.

So is this just me being an elitist asshole or has the shit really hit the fan?

I found Akira to hold up pretty well the last time I saw it. I saw the pioneer re-release, and it was nice and crisp, I can imagine the blue-ray is impeccable.

And fat goth chicks into anime? Score! Amrite?!

The LAST generation of anime fans was overweight nerds with no ability to discern quality too, so what's the difference here?

Are you under the impression that the previous generation of Anime lovers was really dashing and had great taste?
I like that the guy who was semi-banned for a thread about lusting after an (admittedly pretty hot) underage girl now starts a thread bemoaning quality in animes today.

Well they're FATTIES, Luca. I mean yuck!

Not like the finely sculpted bodies of most Trigun fans, let me tell ya.

Anime's a broad church. Which is fortunate, considering the sizeable girth of every generation of anime fans, not just the chunky gothettes currently clogging the bookstore aisles.

The big shift in anime fandom is that young female readers are now the core demographic. Around four years ago a top selling title would have been something like SUPER ROBO DEFEATING TRI-BREASTED GARGOYLE! whereas now it's all KITTEN BASKET TIME!

Progress.

Ahh, goth overweight anime fans...that brings up some memories...of nightmares!
Also, I ahve always respected "Akira" from a technical/animation standpoint, but I cant say I ever really liked it storywise; it pretty much bores me. (Same for GITS).
However, i dont care about people cosplaying in public 24/7; its the same as being goth/punk/etc...I dont give a rat's ass as longa s you dont annoy me personally.

You're wrong there, actually.
The biggest selling title back in the past was "Bouncy booby boobs", now its "Pretty boys kiss each other while being oh so pretty".

Man that takes me back, I sure did love Tri-breasted bouncy booby boobs.

Akira does kinda suck, by the way. I mean I'm not sure if you guys were aware of that, but it's actually pretty shit.
I mean, provided you're older than fifteen, of course.

Akira looks amazing, and I'm sure when it was released it just blew the socks off everyone! But at the time it did bore me, then again I was about 17 when I first watched it. I'm due for another viewing. funny thing is that I owe the DVD in the metal case, just never did pop it in.

Exactly; Maybe its the fact that it takes a comic (or manga, whatever) thats like 6 times the bible in lenght and makes it one movie, but I never, ever found the story in Akira enganging at all.
Its esentially a series of cool sequences bridged together by characters talking about shit I have no idea what's about.
Also, that ending is a big middle finger to the audience.

I read the entire manga and jesus, it gets fucking weird. And I was surprised to find the movie only like the first 3/4ths of the first book. Looks fantastic but seriously sells the entire story short.

They always glom onto the latest thing. Akira hasn't been popular with the hardcore anime nerds since about the mid-90's or so.

When I was sixteen, I used to really like the GITS manga. I loved that at the end of many of the issues they would have a peek at the science that motivated some of the ideas in the book. They did this more with the Appleseed comic series, but yeah. The ideas were what drew me in. The writing was always such a retarded cross between terse action and lame slapstik comedy.

I gave it up shortly after I graduated high school. Many years later, had a friend who got a job working in the warehouse that distributed the Manga Entertainment line of stuff, so I got free copies of the GITS movie as well as Ninja Scroll and all of the other stuff they put out. It made me go back and buy the trade paperback of GITS and re-read it. It was a sharp contrast to the movie, which took itself very very seriously. I ended up mailing off the movie and the book to Devin back in the day, actually :P

RE - the point of this thread:

Complaining about how the new crop of Anime fans is crapping all over the old school Anime fans by not liking Akira is a little like complaining about how the newest generation of plate collectors is crapping all over the old timey plate collectors by turning their noses up at Dale Ernhart commemorative plates. Yeah the young crowd is a little ignorant, but ignorance over crappy art forms is bordering on meta-ignorance.

And the young fans being overweight signifies what, exactly? That you're mean for pointing their weight out? That you are a better human being for even deigning to speak down to them about the great masterpiece known as Akira because everyone knows fat girls are worthless? Pointing out that they were overweight doesn't make you a hero, or even cool.

Wait. What's wrong with overweight Goth girls?
Even among the anime fans that are of my generation the females were never big fans of Akira. Kind of a guy movie if you ask me.
