Lift a glass for Liam Clancy.

Quote:
DUBLIN—Irish balladeer Liam Clancy, last of the Clancy Brothers troupe whose sentimental songs of old Ireland spearheaded a 1960s folk revival worldwide, has died in a Cork hospital at the age of 74.
His manager and family say he died Friday in his hospital bed flanked by his wife and two daughters. He earlier talked by telephone with one musician son who is on tour in California, while his other son was still traveling home from England.

The New York-based quartet—Liam Clancy, older brothers Tom and Patrick, and partner Tommy Makem—took America by storm in the 1960s after performing on TV's flagship Ed Sullivan Show. Tom Clancy died in 1990, Patrick in 1998, and Makem in 2007.

Bob Dylan called Liam Clancy "the best ballad singer I've ever heard."
The story goes that he was also Dylan's romantic rival on a couple of occasions, and according to Clancy, Dylan always got the girl.

The man's voice has been part of my life for as long as I can remember. This one really hits home.

Damn. I hate having to tell my Dad this piece of news. I'll have to see if I can find a photo I have of my Dad and Liam together. Great guy.

I'd love to see that pic.

I've always been glad that they managed that reunion tour in the 90's. I'd seen Makem and Clancy, but that was my only chance to see the full group in concert.

They did a cruise ship back in the 90s (can't recall which line) but that's where my dad got to meet them. My dad still says it's the best vacation he ever had too.

Growing up on every road trip, we'd pull out all the Clancy Brothers tapes and listen to them non-stop. Amazing how much those songs still resonate.

I grew up on the Clancy Brothers. It's a sad day.
Maybe, though, this will get Columbia off it's butt and give the Clancy Brs.Catalog a decent Compact Disc release. The Clancys have not been well served on CD..although we finally got a good CD with the recent 2 CD recording of their 1963 Carnagie Hall Concert.

It is odd how randomly their CBS stuff has been handled. In fact, two of their very best CBS albums (The Boys Won't Leave The Girls Alone and Hearty and Hellish) were both released on CD years ago by Shanachie (with the original CBS covers and liner notes!)-- I don't know if CBS has ever got round to those two themselves.
