Recast Your Favorite Movies - 09 Edition!

Thread Starter
I missed it this year, so pologies if it already happened. But I doubt it did. This thread made for some good reading, and culminated in an epic all black Lord of the Rings. Let's try again.

Blue Velvet

Chris Pine as Jeffrey Beaumont (Kyle Machlachlan)

Marion Cotillard as Dorothy Vallens (ISabella Rosellini)

Anna Paquin as Sandy Williams (Laure Dern)

and Woody Harrelson as Frank Booth (Dennis Hopper)
why would you want to do that. the cast was pretty good already.
That's a little bit inspired, Arjen, especially Cotillard and Harrelson (especially Harrelson). May I make a suggestion re. Jeffrey and Sandy, though?

Anton Yelchin as Jeffrey, Ellen Page as Sandy.

And Sean Penn takes over from Dean Stockwell as Ben!
Thread Starter
I'll take Page, but Yelchin might be a little too slight. Jeff's got to have some serious balls underneath that innocence, or he gets out of that situation quick. I was wondering about Stockwell, and Penn ain't bad.
Hoping these threads would get restarted (before my time, but I lurked at them)

I'll do my favorite movie of all time: The Wild Bunch

Pike (formerly William Holden): Kurt Russel.

Dutch (formerly Ernest Borgnine): Billy Bob Thorton.

Lyle Gorch (formerly Warren Oates): Walt Goggins (because the man is practically the second coming of Oates anyway)

Tector Gorch (formerly Ben Johnson): William Forsythe
post #6 of 862
Deke Thorton (formerly Robert Ryan): David Strathairn

Angel (formerly Jaime Sanchez): Diego Luna
post #7 of 862
Freddy Sykes (formerly Edmond O'Brien): Kris Kristofferson

Coffer (formerly Strother Martin): Stephen Root

JT (formerly LQ Jones): Tim Blake Nelson
I'll give it a shot.

A recast of Beetlejuice, with a little twist.

Adam Maitland (Alec Baldwin): Jason Bateman

Barbara Maitland (Geena Davis): Clair Danes

Beetlejuice (Michael Keaton): Ali Larter

Lydia Deetz (Winona Ryder): Daryl Sabara

Delia Deetz (Catherine O'Hara): Tina Fey

Charles Deetz (Jeffery Jones): Will Ferrell

Otho (Glenn Shadix): Christopher Guest

Juno (Sylvia Sidney): Tuesday Weld

Imagine Beetljuice as a evil sexy minx trying to seduce Daryl Sabara. Character names would have to be changed but I think it could work.

Will Ferrell is the only choice I really question. I just blanked when I came to the Charles Deetz part and could think of no other person.
Thread Starter
I can get behind Bateman, Danes, and Guest, but I can't go with Larter. Maybe Anna Faris? Naw, fuck it, Nicolas Cage. For the Deetzs, I'd go Amy Poehler and Steve Carell.

Walton Goggins is a piece of genius there. That whole cast is pretty ballkicking.

The Sting
Brad Pitt as Henry Gondorff

Leonardo DiCaprio as Johnny Hooker

James Gandolfini as Doyle Lonagan

Not good.

ETA: Well, they're mostly all good actors so I can't really say not good. Far from inspired casting, at least.

Nah... Steve Carell wouldn't work. You need someone that can play the loving put upon father with the slightly creepy vibe of a future sex offender. A roll Jeffery Jones was born to play.

Will Ferrell is too nice as well... how about Sean Patrick Flanery?

Not exactly.

That and the fact that Hopper is often a comic actor with a dangerous streak. In fact, I'd say that if Harrelson is managing his career well, he'll parlay his Zombieland success into a Frank Booth type role.

I'm sorry, Erix. I dug a lot of your choices but I found this one to be deeply troubling for the CIA Bartender. There's only one man I can envision who would have a slight chance of filling Ronnie Barron's shoes...

I've only ever seen Krasinski playing ironic smartasses, but he certainly looks the part in that shot. But I'd definately go with Mel Gibson in the Claude Rains role. Maybe because he's great for it, or maybe just because of the Simpsons.

Gibson would work. The only reason why I picked Hanks is because a bit against the grain. We always hear of Hanks being the next Jimmy Stewart and I think it would be cool to see him play an actual villain. Sure, he wouldn't be the most villainous character in the movie (Taylor is, for sure) but I'd like to think that by putting Hanks in that role... you'd see filmgoers who haven't seen the original Smith to think that Hanks is playing the typical Liam Neeson-type father figure role.

As for Krasinski, I like the guy a lot. I think he's got a potential star power to him depending on the roles he selects. I think he can certainly pull off the naivety needed for Jeff Smith, but also bring the intensity needed for the part toward the end of the film.

Ok Molt... I'll give you that. From an acting standpoint, that seems like a better choice.

I guess I was looking at the affectionate comic relief aspect of the character and looked at it as a way for Hill to "stretch" in a dramatic part... It just seemed like the kind of thing that happens from time to time. Like having Kumar show up as a dastardly villain on 24.

And I think I would enjoy seeing Thomas Jane blow Jonah Hill away with a shotgun blast to the stomach.

By the way, DARKMITE's idea of recasting The Muppet Show with the cast of Seinfeld is kind of brilliant.

Check out AWAY WE GO. It doesn't prove he could do Mr. Smith, but it's something other than ironic smartass. I do think he'd be an interesting choice for the role though.

Dickson - I did Munchuasen in the last one. We both picked McKellen and Ronan. I took Gervais as Mr. Jackson though. And Ken Branagh as Berthold. But we're of similar minds.

I like Adewale as Albrecht.

Inglourious Basterds, 60s style

Clint Eastwood as Aldo Raine

Faye Dunaway as Bridget Von Hammersmark

Ann-Margaret as Shosanna Dreyfuss

James Mason as Hans Landa

Throw in Dustin Hoffman as Donnie Donowitz and David Niven as Archie Hicox.

Zombieland circa the 70s:

In my head for the last couple of weeks I have been trying to re-cast Buckaroo Banzai. Now you bastards are going to make me do it.

Buckaroo Banzai Vs the World Crime League

Buckaroo Banzai: Mark Ruffalo

Yeah this could go a lot of different ways, but this is off the top of my head.
Oh, and the "cameo" for my 70s Zombieland:

That photo didn't come through, but I'd like to think it's Rodney Dangerfield.

But who the hell's Lizardo? That's the real question.
It was actually Gene Wilder, but Dangerfield might be a better choice.
Arjen, he did say it was World Crime League, not an 8th Dimension remake, so it doesn't necessarily have Lizardo, but if it did... maybe Sacha Baron Cohen? Maybe too broad for the tone he seems to be going for with that cast and director but I'd love to see him chewing scenery in a darker role like that, and we know he can do over the top accents...
I'd go Peter Stormare for Lizardo.
I would definitely go for World Crime League. No need for a complete redo. And as I said, off the top of my head.

Edited to add: I had to get Depp and Reeves out of my head for Banzai.
It's been remade twice already but here's how I'd recast The Getaway.

Doc McCoy:
George Clooney

Carol McCoy:

Holly Hunter

Rudy Torrento:

Nicholas Cage

Jack Beynon:

Ed Harris

Harold Clinton:

William H Macy

Fran Clinton:

Tara Reid

And another WWII movie.

Kelly's Heroes

Liev Schreiber as Kelly (Clint Eastwood)

Jeffrey Dean Morgan as Big Joe (Telly Savalas)

Danny McBride as Crapgame (Don Rickles)

Seann William Scott as Oddball (Donald Sutherland)

And let's say Val Kilmer in the Carrol O'Connor role.
Oops, I started a thread for this topic a few weeks back, not knowing it was already covered. So, if it's alright with everyone, I'll just cut and paste what I'd already written there:

Ok, so, this one has been on my mind for weeks now. I firmly believe JFK to be the best film of the 1990s, and one of the greatest films ever made. And... I really like Kevin Costner, and am something of an apologist for him and his work. I think his Garrison has a real "Mr Smith Goes To Washington" aw-shucks appeal to it, and Costner's slightly dopey demeanor helps you to feel that he's waking up to the truth about the MIC (Military Industrial Complex) right before your eyes.

With that said, last year I went to go see a play. It was a play starring one of my favorite actors, and in that play he put on a perfect Louisiana accent. I was front row and center, and half way through I had a revelation.

THIS is the man who should have played Garrison:

I can no longer call JFK a perfect film, because true perfection would have been made with Campbell Scott in the lead role. Take a moment and picture how Mr Scott would have delivered the key moments of dialog, and then try and tell me I'm wrong

With that said, anyone else have a similar film they're convinced would have been better with a different actor in one of the roles?

I'll throw in two more to spark discussion: Gangs of NY and Kingdom of Heaven. Each starring this man instead of DiCaprio and Bloom:

I know some people think he is dour or one note, but even his biggest critics would have to admit what he brings to the table would have been perfect for Amsterdam and Balien
