I don't think anyone's disagreeing with the verdict. I think people are disagreeing with the beatifying of a woman who lied repeatedly prior to the trial and who deliberately falsely implicated an innocent man.
Exactly this.
In the end, there was no conclusive proof of her involvement and so she was -rightfully- released.
But suspicions were -and are- legit, and there was NO witch-hunt.
It was not the Italian system, for all its flaws, that overstepped its boundaries: if anything it was some American "VIPs" and organizations that behaved improperly and unrespectfully towards Italy, seeing the potential "American Sweetheart" effect as a tool to gain popularity.
And apparently, they were right.
As for damages, Knox in theory could apply for them, and it would be Italian taxpayers (alas!) the ones who would ultimately pay them (unless it all makes even with the time she actually had to serve). Still, it must be noted that the trial isn't effectively over, there may be another grade (though the last one only evaluates the technical soundness of the other two).
You savages got off lucky. You should have had the same fate as Emperor Theodore II of Abyssinia when he took a bunch of British hostages back in 1868.
To be fair, she was a dumb 20 year old girl. I mean that in the best possible way. Her family even mentioned how naive she was. She clearly had the mentality of a teenager away from home off at college. It doesn't excuse what she did by lying but the simple truth is she probably just wasn't bright enough to realize what the hell was going on like 75% of teenagers.
I feel worse for her (ex)boyfriend who thought he bagged a hot American girl and went to prison instead.
