As requested. June 11 is the first match, South Africa vs. Mexico.

Let the talk begin!

The US will not suck. (By American standards, that is...)

Round of 16 or bust!

What I'm looking for in the cup:

1) Which African team(s) will ride the home continent advantage to the knockout round?

2) Can the Netherlands put all that talent together for good results on the World Cup stage.. you know, when it counts?

3) How will the USA play in a cup where it is 'expected' to advance?

4) France. Everyone will hate, how will they relate?
That's pretty much everything I'm looking forward to also. A great opportunity for African teams to compete with elite sides with a huge home advantage. Will European teams continue their Cup failure outside of the Old Continent?

I'm also looking forward to Mexico's performance; a shaky qualifying process and several coaching changes have them a little less confident than usual, though being drawn in group A with South Africa, Uruguay, and France probably has them thinking second round once again.
If I ever wanted a stadium collapse during the World Cup it'd be during the France - Mexico game.

Seriously, Donovan. win or I'm coming after you.

Don't write them off just yet. Could be Brazil in '02 all over again. It's a big could, but still.

Judging by the situation as of today:

1) Most likely Ivory Coast. Very strong team - Though in a very tough group.

2) Depends to a certain degree on the question if the injured players like van Persie are gonna be in good shape for the tournament. Though I´d think that they will once again vanish when it counts after making a very strong impression in the round games.

3) You should make the knock out stage. But if I recall correctly you will very likely play against Germany. And here I am obviously gonna claim that this will be the end of your longings for the cup in 2010.

4) I doubt that the structure of the team is solid enough to make a lasting impression. Give them another 2-4 years to form a strong team around the young generation of Ribery, Gourcouff and Benzema and they´ll strive.
Greece all the way!

Actually, we'll probably suck ass judging from our performance so far.
Oh you will! Otto.

June 12th can't get here fast enough. I've been invited to go this year, but I'm still on the fence about it. If six months from now is anything like now, then I doubt I can take two weeks off of work. Lame.

That sucks in so many ways.

I'm pushing the friends who want to visit to plan their trips around the World Cup. It would be really cool if I could find other Americans who want to brave being in an London-based fan fest.

Get rid of Maradona and you could walk it with the current squad, there are world class palyers in more or less every position.

Although if he doesn't go we will get to enjoy him sliding around the pitch on his belly after you score and telling journalists to suck his balls again.

I'm sad Russia didn't get there, really good to watch when they click together.

Spain to win with Villa getting the golden boot.

England to go out in the quarters to someone like Serbia.

North Korea to surprise everyone and get to the quarters or the semis

England will go out on penalties, like we always do.

Germany is the absolute worst matchup for the US in soccer. With other matchups, many times I can talk myself into "hey, we've got a shot" (England included) but if I know we're going up against Germany.. no way. That's why I think the England match is going to be even more intriguing.. both teams want those 3 points because they want to avoid Germany as long as possible. I don't think either team will play for the tie, which in other groups with similar situations, you might see happen.

Agree 100%. Germany always seems like a matchup nightmare for us, and with Onyewu's injury and Bradley trying to mix and match pieces at the back, our defense may be a bit spotty throughout the Cup. Germany's always good in the air and they always seem to fire in a 25 yarder or two in Cup play. You're right on about this potential nightmare match in the Round of 16 making the US-England matchup so much more important. Can you imagine England-Germany in the round of 16, though? Terrifying.
Don't count out Serbia in that group. With their central defense and midfield they will give Germany fits. Germany could not have been happy to be in the same group as Serbia the way they have been playing in qualifying and friendlies over the past two years.
England will lose to the USA. It is the first match in and England will be already planning the victory party, hugely over confident thanks to the media and the USA will run rings around them. England will still qualify but it'll be the hard way - Also, I always relish the game against the Germans - it's gotta go our way once - sometime?

Mexico -Uruguay should be a fun group although I can see South Africa making the 2nd round (possibly after some dubious shenanigans)

It's weird to hear people write off Argentina but i think they'll be there - that much talent and expectation is gonna be hard to ignore. Sure people have it in for Maradona - is he fat at the moment? I can't keep track - but he's still a legendary figure in the game.

This is true, but it will probably be in the Quarter Finals again, after everybody has gone apeshit and got their hopes up that THIS time, it's ours for the taking. Cue millions of people being immensely pissed off.
Ahhh, you silly Brits. Same procedure as every year I guess?

At the end of the day, Lineker will be proven right anyway....Oh noes! Ze Krauts!
I swear, the hilarious complex the British have where the Germans are concerned must be the best part about football.
Even for the Sun - the rag of rags - that's ridiculous.
It The Sun, the newspaper of braindead cunts up and down the country. Being a Liverpool fan I have an obvious hatred of that rag, but even if you're not I can't see why anyone would read it.

I like the German's reaction to our hatred of their football team, which is 'meh'. If England do get Germany I hope they knock us out.
Wow, this is the last thing I would want were I an English Footballer heading into the Cup. Now, because of an irresponsible "paper" they might go into South Africa as villains, through no fault of their own. If I was the head of their football federation, I would start an immediate campaign to denounce and distance myself from this foolishness. Nazi shirts? Really?
It could be worse. You could be John Terry.

The way Messi's been playing lately... man. One can hope. But Maradona is SO bad at this. He'll fuck it up. Even with what's possibly the best group of individual players out there.

I picked up the ESPN: The Magazine's World Cup Preview issue.. pretty good, just enough to whet my whistle for the Cup. I don't agree with their assertion that DaMarcus Beasley will be in the starting lineup for the US ... if he is, we should just throw in the towel now, but hope springs eternal.
Speaking of ESPN, have any of you guys seen their Greatest Of All Time series? Actually I think it's a British production but it's screened in NZ on ESPN. They just started playing over here a few weeks back and it's a series of really great profiles of legendary players like Zico, Schmeichel, Gabrielle Batistuta, featuring interviews with those players as well as coaches, teammates and opponents and of course game footage.
I find it funny that ESPN hired an all-British crew to do American play-by-play this time around. Sure, I hope the guy who decided to move Dave O'Brien from the MLB coverage, send his ass over here and expect him to pick up the game in two months got fired. Still, JP Dellacamera is no slouch, and I like the unpredictability of Eric Wynalda. John Harkes is awful.

I've joined a ex-pat meetup group who are planning on getting together for the USA-England game. I'm undecided.

My offer of buying tabloids and sending them to Chewers in the US should they beat England still stands.

ESPN hires Klinsmann to be World Cup analyst.

If only the US could have coaxed him out of retirement to play striker instead ...
Brian Ching?!?! Brian fucking Ching?!?!

Bradley couldn't take a flier on Davies to see how he'd respond, but decided on Brian "useless in international play" Ching?!?

Boooooo.

If Eddie Johnson and DaMarcus Beasley both make it out of camp, I will shoot somebody.
Once again I enter into an abusive relationship with England, I keep hoping they won't disappoint me but I know they will. Penalty shootout or bust.
I've made a habit of cheering for the USA since I've lived here but I won't be doing that on the 12th. I really do want to see both teams go through to the next round, gives me more games to look forward to. USA will just have to settle for 2nd place!

I just wish the games weren't so early in the day for us here, I'd love to see the England - USA at my local!

You basis this anaylsis on what exactly? wishful thinking?

Also the last time we played Germany in a competitve match, we destroyed them 5-1 on their home patch. You might have heard of it

Except you'd struggle to argue that England have been amoung the best teams in the world, so a top 8 finish is par for the course

Lalalala! I can´t hear you. Sorry, you where sayi...look, is that a plane?

Seriously though, one should mention the last game in Wembley in this context. Hamann anyone? So there is that. And look what the WC 2002 had in store for both teams. Just sayin....

Anyway, thanks to Boateng in the Cup final, Ballack will be sorely missed (So it is funny that the German, who is playing for Ghana - the first group opponent in 2010 - did kick Ballack out of the tournament permanently). But on the other hand I do believe that this could facilliate the change of generations even faster than anticipated. After all now there will be a completely different team than 2006 and 2008. Otherwise it will be at least an excuse for the players...

World Cup field comparisons that dumb Americans can understand
post #44 of 1863
So Greece=Tampa Bay, then? From my limited knowledge of American football this sounds about right. Our defense is not that dangerous now, though. We're going to get creamed.
More like the Ravens. Although maybe that defense is too dominant.

Some of those are pretty good, even though the idea of even doing that doesn't sit well with me.
I thought it was funny as hell, personally.

Already posted it on my Facebook.

Very nice. I laughed at the "Starring Gael García Bernal as Ronaldo" part.
That Nike video is fucking brilliant Callahan, I owe you a beer for pointing me at that.

It's going to play awkwardly in Brasil though, unless Dunga has a change of heart on old Ronaldinho Gaucho.

Haha, those write ups are so spot on. For me it works opposite to how he intends it, because it educated me on some of the American teams I know nothing of by way of the World Cup countries I know plenty of. Northern Iowa you say ...

Read the first 70 pages of Soccernomics today at Barnes & Noble. It's basically Freakonomics, as applied to soccer. It seems like a pretty good read, even for sports fans new to soccer.
