Smashing Pumpkins - Teargarden by Kaleidyscope

Might as well start this album thread here and just add to it as the new songs come in (check the press release, they are releasing the album sporadically for free online).
The first song from Smashing Pumpkins was just released on their official site for free download. It is called "Song for a Son" and it is pretty amazing. I am a huge fan and although I liked their last album, knew it just wasn't that good. Hopefully this redeems them. Sounds very thematic, vintage, and very mournful.

Decent song. But IMHO this band just loses so much with the absence of Chamberlin. Corgan's voice aside, Chamberlin has always been the backbone, and his playing is such a signature part of the Smashing Pumpkins sound. The sound that put them on the map with Gish and Siamese Dream, anyway.

I thought the new song was pretty good. I've never been the biggest Smashing Pumpkins fan; Gish being the only album of theirs I own and listen to quite regularly. I have kept up with them throughout the years and am curious to see how this project turns out. I liked the soloing in the new song quite a bit.

That may be in contention for 'Most Pretentious Album Title of Every Year'.

I normally hate using the word "pretentious" when describing something but the word fits when it comes to this band.

I love ADORE and like MACHINA. I still enjoy ZWAN. For the past couple of years, Corgan's voice sounds tired. This music just does not come from that warm, quirky place anymore. Hell, even some of their '90s B-sides sounds better. I'm not sure what's in the way, because he's definitely talented. The vibe is just wrong, somehow. Still look forward to whatever's next, however.

"Widow Wake My Mind" and "A Stitch in Time" are available for free at smashingpumpkins.com.

These last two releases show a musically calm side of Corgan than any of his releases during the last decade. I am definitely enjoying this album (so far) a lot more than I expected.

In related news there is a Rolling Stone feature hitting newsstands soon and he drops some bombs (he fired Jimmy C. again) and insults (to James Iha) so it should be a very interesting read.

"Astral Planes" is now available from their official site: /http://www.smashingpumpkins.com/

We finally get a rocker with more than decent guitar work. It is growing on me but definitely the weakest track thus far on this long long experiment from Mr. Corgan.

Remember, all of their songs are free so it's worth a listen.

I just have to say it. That is terrible.

I hope Billy Corgan ends up working at the same car wash as Ben Weasel and Nash Kato.

11 EPs? Wow.

I guess it isn't that different from the Infinite Sadness singles, with all those B-sides they released, some of which were great. It will probably work out to around the same amount of tracks too(and quality vs. quantity). I've dug Smashing Pumpkins over the years, but kind of loathe Corgan. It's not his voice or anything, and I feel the same way about Jim Morrison vs. the Doors(who I think are great). I just think he's full of shit.

I concur about the Infinite Sadness singles, so many little treasures in there.

Set the Ray to Jerry was the best thing he ever wrote. And thats one of those b-sides.

New song "Spangled" is available here, and then officially at www.smashingpumpkins.com tomorrow.

Corgan's 6 for 6, as far as I'm concerned - I love this song for all of its tweady, pretty oddness. The reaction elsewhere online has been pretty muted, but this one just made me smile. I'm having lots of fun adding all of these to my iTunes along with the cool artwork.

These guys became irrelevant after Mellon Collie.

I really loved "Adore" and "Siamese Dream," but "Mellon Collie" hasn't held up, and "Machina" really never did much for me outside of "Stand Inside Your Love." I feel like Billy's voice is great with ballads, but not so much the rockers. A song like "Soma" is where it all comes together for me, in terms of dynamics. Lyrically, I think Billy shines best on "Adore." I haven't loved a Corgan song since the late 90s, and that kinda bums me out, since I was a huge Pumpkins fan for a good long stretch there.

Some of those "Mellon Collie" B-sides are really great, especially Set The Ray.

Another new song has appeared ahead of its release in the "album" sequence - I dig it a lot, but I realize this will probably be the most polarizing Teargarden track thus far:

The Fellowship
