Router suggestions

Thread Starter
Apparently my router is refusing to connect with my PS3. I think it might be time to put this thing out of its misery (it's the only router we've ever had, it's 5-6 years old, and it keeps randomly dropping out internet forcing us go in and unplug it and reboot 4-5 times a week), but I don't have a clue about what to look for in a router to replace it. I just want something that's affordable and works well with the PS3 and our 2 laptops.

Any suggestions?

I know you said affordable, but my Apple Airport Extreme is the best router I've ever owned, and I've gone through a few before this one. It doesn't give you as many nitty-gritty control options as other brands, but the connection is always rock solid, and the range is fantastic. I get good signal strength in every room of our two storey house.

Linksys routers are good and cheap enough.

Yeah, I like Linksys routers but I do have trouble with the Wake On LAN functionality of my PS3 with it (I have the Linksys WRT150n) . And the wireless never seemed great (but 99% of the time I've connected with the ethernet).

Linksys, easily. And if you're confident in your tech abilities install the Tomato firmware.

Something that will run DD-WRT.

Not to derail, but how is the UI for DD-WRT once you get it installed? I've been tempted to install it on mine but didn't want it to be something where I have to SSH in and do command line changes.

I'm using the D-Link DIR-825 and I'm liking it. The only downfall is that I guess it's too new to work properly with our internet modem. So I have to run the internet modem through our old Linksys and then run the Linksys into the D-Link.

Ive used Dlink routers for a while now (for the PC, wireless network and Xbox 360), and they're great. Cant think of a better brand when it comes to routers.

At home I run Dlink's DIR-655 in only N mode with WPA2 encryption. In retrospect I probably should've gone with one that handles the 5GHz band but it works well enough protecting a few computers and a couple of servers plus the multimedia hardware.

At the office I run Apple's Airport Extreme in, again, only wide channel 5GHz N mode with WPA2 encryption. I picked this one because of its ranged performance since I'm in an office environment full of medical equipment going ping all the time. One caveat -- the lack of a really detailed interface for the firewall really bugs me [yeah, I'd ssh in and change /etc files if I could].

Both are immediately downstream of the modems.
