It came out right smack between Jaws and Star Wars, and could be said to be the middle film of a trilogy of troubled-in-the-making, non-surefire-hit blockbusters that, I suspect, hit so big because the mass audience was craving a return to simplicity and old-fashioned thrills, uplift, catharsis after a few years of Vietnam-era downers. Older people who saw Rocky pegged it as a bag of old manipulative tricks, but a generation was seeing those tricks for the first time.
