Watching game walkthroughs on YouTube...

On days when I have lots of freelance to do, I quite typically will have videos playing in the background for games I was on the fence about and more than likely will not have time to actually play. Dead Space is almost like a movie given how the music and sound effects cue to events or the appearance of enemies, and made for a decent listen/quick glancing. The gameplay seemed repetitive, but without actually having played the game my interpretation could be flawed :P I am just going through Bioshock right now 9another game I never got around to playing). I try to find videos without commentary tracks, because nothing is worse than trying to hear the story of a game over the nasal musings of a 14 year old kid explaining why he is so awesome. Anyone else do this?

No, I seem to have retained my will to live thus far.

There's... not much to DO in Winnipeg, is there.

Yeah, I try to avoid all gamer-related videos, especially after watching one of an emaciated teenager absolutely losing his shit over Gears of War 2.

I watched one part of a walkthrough once, but just because I was stuck somewhere. There's porn on the internet, you know.

Or better yet, find videos of other people watching porn!

Visit Churchill (Polar Bear capital of the world). Pisew Falls. That's about all I can think of, off the top of my head. I can see why pay is so high there (to attract people to move there).

Reaction videos to videos of Luca watching porn. How deep does this meta-rabbit hole go?

Nah, I´ll rather watch that on Youtube.

Not while I am doing freelance, no. It's the problem I always find myself facing: new games come out that I desperately want to play, and then I get a bunch of offers for work and have to not play. Then too much time passes and even newer games come out. It would be a vicious circle if I wasn't essentially getting paid not to play.

I sometimes do this.

Usually when I'm working on a big project, I'll do this. I don't have the cash to buy consoles, or the time really.

Also, it's a great way to visit old games that you might never be able to find, need special software to play, etc.

And to be honest, some of the commentaries can be very amusing. If you're bored, I'd recommend

"Her Crabbiness" On Youtube. She does old Sierra games, and I was introduced to King's Quest 6, Laura Bow: Colonel's Bequest, Dagger of Amon-Ra, also watched Phantasmagoria and it was rather hilarious. Also, I suck at first person shooters and horror games. This way, I can see what happens.

Yeah, it's lame. Meh.

Eh, for me I like seeing how the stories behind the games are going to turn out. Rather than read Wikipedia, I watch them being played. A lot of the time I am just listening to the games while I do work, but yeah, I'd only call it lame if I wasn't doing anything else but watching the game footage.

If you want to stroll down memory lane with older games (and don't want to rustle up the emulators and roms) that site has plenty to wade through. Many are screenshot webpages, however.

Neat idea, Mike. For background purposes at least.

Whenever I've looked on Youtube for gaming videos they are nearly always dubbed over with some godawful numetal or something.
The only time I've done this was for Batman: Arkham Asylum. When it came out I didn't want to drop over $50 to buy it, but I wanted to see how the story worked out. Now I wish I'd bought the game, although the ending was stupid.

Well, here are the playlists I have found in YouTube with walthroughs that don't have any audio commentary and actually do the whole games from start to finish (so far):

Dead Space

Dead Space: Extraction

Bioshock

I've found lots of partial walkthroughs of course, but the above three are really well done - just game footage, no changed audio (for the most part, in one of the parts of the Bioshock one the guy dubs in music appropriate to the time period so you don't get to hear any of the in-game audio), and NO audio commentary whatsoever.

Sometimes having an audio commentary is worthwhile. Especially when the player has a decent amount of wit behind them, reacts in a humorous fashion to in-game scares and gives nicknames to enemies (Mr. Choppy from Dead Space). Also when they're British.
