"Atheist? Sorry, can't hold a public office."

Even if the Supreme Court has ruled that unconsitutional.

Opponents of Cecil Bothwell are seizing on that law to argue he should not be seated as a City Council member today, even though federal courts have ruled religious tests for public office are unlawful under the U.S. Constitution.

Voters elected the writer and builder to the council last month.

“I'm not saying that Cecil Bothwell is not a good man, but if he's an atheist, he's not eligible to serve in public office, according to the state constitution,” said H.K. Edgerton, a former Asheville NAACP president.

Article 6, section 8 of the state constitution says: “The following persons shall be disqualified for office: First, any person who shall deny the being of Almighty God.”
Assuming for a moment this has a shred of merit -- which it doesn't -- wouldn't the time to mention this have been when he first filed to run, not after he's been elected? Sounds like sour grapes to me.

Sounds like they were either keeping it in their back pocket as a last minute play or they found it after the loss as they were desperately looking for any old loophole to get him knocked out. I'd bet on the former.

What a load of shit. Honestly, between Sean's two scenarios, I'm betting on the latter myself, because bringing this up now could only be an act of desperation.

Is it my imagination or is it pretty ludicrous to have a complaint of this nature coming from someone who was involved in the NAACP?

Of course, on closer look, this H.K. Edgerton is a real unique brand of kook.
